It is with great pleasure that we may now announce the 16th line-up of the renowned Belgian Independent Music Festival 2017 (BIMFEST)!
Like every year, BodyBeats Productions have succeeded in compiling a layered and varied, but always fitting within the 'BIMFEST 'spirit, line-up.
After last year’s 100% Belgian and 15th anniversary bill, BodyBeats is looking abroad again this year. Also, because there’s no BIMFEST without at least a few quality homegrown products like this year, for instance, IMPLANT (with a brand new album!) and PARADE GROUND.
Loyal BIMFEST-goers will immediately spot a couple of returning BIMFEST acquaintances like NO MORE (D), THE INVINCIBLE SPIRIT (D) and PSYCHE (CAN) on the poster but also some less obvious names (to Belgian standards) such as rhythmic and industrial act XOTOX from Germany or the Techno / EBM crossover project of the NYC electro producer and performer Oliver Chesler, THE HORRORIST (LIVE!).
They also succeeded to get KIRLIAN CAMERA, from warm but dark and industrial Southern Italy, fronted by the stunning and charismatic Elena Alice Fossi, who will undoubtedly bring the temperature in the front rows to boiling point. Also THE CASSANDRA COMPLEX (UK) will easily get the crowd moving and warmed-up with beautiful songs like 'One Millionth Happy Customer', 'Second Shot' or 'March 89'.
The main catch of BIMFEST 2017 is undoubtedly the pleasant deranged British Electro combo BLANCMANGE, who almost everyone should know from their 80s mega-hits like "Don't Tell Me," "Blind Vision ',' Feel Me 'and' Game Above My Head '... to name but a few!
The only two names that remain to be announced are those of the bands that will open on Friday 15th and Saturday 16th December. These two names can in fact be chosen by YOU on the Dark Demons Night on Saturday, June 17th in Antwerp's great concert hall, Het Oude Badhuis. Het is met groot genoegen dat wij u de 16de affiche van het Belgian Independent Music Festival (BIMFEST) mogen voorstellen!
Zoals ieder jaar is BodyBeats Productions er ook dit jaar weer in geslaagd een gevarieerde, maar steeds binnen de ‘BIMFEST geest’ passende line-up samen te stellen.
Na de 100% Belgische en 15 jarig jubileum affiche van vorig jaar is BodyBeats het dit jaar opnieuw ook in het buitenland gaan zoeken. Ook, want geen BIMFEST zonder op zijn minst enkele kwalitatieve inlandse producten, zoals dit jaar IMPLANT (met een splinternieuw album!) en PARADE GROUND.
Trouwe BIMFEST-gangers zullen meteen een paar terugkerende oude bekenden zoals NO MORE (D), THE INVINCIBLE SPIRIT (D) en PSYCHE (CAN) zien opduiken op de affiche, maar naar goede gewoonte zijn er natuurlijk ook voor ons land iets minder voor de hand liggende namen zoals het ritmisch en industriële XOTOX uit Duitsland of het Techno/EBM cross-over project THE HORRORIST, van de uit NYC afkomstige Amerikaanse electro producer en performer Oliver Chesler.
Verder hebben ze, uit het warme maar donkere industriële Italië, eindelijk KIRLIAN CAMERA kunnen strikken. Een band die met de bloedmooie charismatische front vrouw Elena Alice Fossi ongetwijfeld de temperatuur op de eerste rijen hoog zal doen oplopen. Ook THE CASSANDRA COMPLEX (UK) zal mening bezoeker zeker beroeren met prachtnummers als ’One Millionth Happy Costumer’, ‘Second Shot’ of ‘March 89’.
DE hoofdvogel op BIMFEST dit jaar is ongetwijfeld het prettig gestoorde Britse Electro combo BLANCMANGE die bijna iedereen moet kennen van hun 80’s mega-hits zoals daar zijn ‘Don’t Tell me’, ‘Blind Vision’, ‘Feel me’ en ‘Game Above My Head’ … Om er maar enkele te noemen!
De enige twee namen die zij u nog verschuldigd blijven, zijn die van de bands die respectievelijk op vrijdag 15 en zaterdag 16 december zullen openen. Ono Scream... One of Antwerps best kept secrets? Check it out for yourself!
Ono Scream, the solo project of Apparaat-frontman Bart Willems, has one foot proudly in the past but with the other one he takes a step forward. He eagerly uses the sounds of the gloomy eighties. You'll hear references to his childhood heroes (Fad Gadget, early Simple Minds, Bauhaus...) which are glued to modern influences like Soft Moon and Tropic Of Cancer but with a sharp, Ono Scream-like twist to them.
Ono Scream is Willems' very personal way of dealing with the past, while looking to the future. There is a light at the end of this tunnel. He’s tried his hand at a myriad of musical styles, to wind up back at his true passion: synth-driven rock music, both old and new. With mesmerising keys, pounding bass-loops, wintry voice and a sporadic feminine touch, he immerses the listener in a melancholy but also riveting world.
Songs such as "Nations" and "This Endless Walking" resound with both the grandeur in a minor key and the anxious hope for the future of, say, The Cure and Killing Joke. Elsewhere we hear the fuzz of The Jesus & Mary Chain or the drones of Gary Numan. The familiarity of these retro sounds grabs you by the scruff of the neck and shows you exciting new places.
Nostalgie is een enorm krachtige emotie - het kan zeer verleidelijk zijn om je in foetushouding opgerold te laven aan de warme gloed van het verleden - maar tegelijkertijd is het dus ook gevaarlijk. Blijven hangen in een door een roze bril gekleurd tijdperk dat nooit bestaan heeft, werkt verlammend. Bekijk het dus liever eens door een donkere, zwarte bril. Ono Scream, het soloproject van Apparaat-frontman Bart Willems, staat met één been trots in het verleden, maar met het andere maakt het een stap voorwaarts. Bart Willems graait gretig in het geluid van de duistere jaren tachtig en je hoort referenties aan z’n jeugdhelden (Fad Gadget, early Simple Minds, Bauhaus,...) die vastgeketend worden aan moderne invloeden als Soft Moon en Tropic Of Cancer. Vervolgens geeft Ono Scream daar zijn eigen scherpe draai aan.
Ono Scream is Willems’ zeer persoonlijke verwerking van het verleden en blik op de toekomst. Er is licht aan het einde van deze tunnel. Hij heeft heel wat muzikale waters doorzwommen om terug te komen bij z’n ware passie: synthgedreven rockmuziek van toen en nu. Met z’n bezwerende klavier, bonkende basloops, onderkoelde stem, met een sporadische vrouwelijke toets, dompelt hij je onder in een melancholische wereld waar het fijn toeven is.
In liedjes als “Nations” en “This Endless Walking” weerklinkt de grandeur in mineur en angstvallige hoop voor de toekomst van pakweg The Cure of Killing Joke. Elders heerst de fuzz van The Jesus & Mary Chain of de lijzigheid van Gary Numan. De vertrouwdheid van die retroklanken grijpt je bij je nekvel en voert je mee naar nieuwe oorden.
As Youth- and Music Centre Kinky Star is turning 20 in April, we will be celebrating and cherishing all the different facets of the organisation, ranging from the most central point of Kinky Stars’ existence, the music, to the current volunteer's work, to the art program which runs within Kinky Star. The 20th anniversary will take place from Thursday the 13th until Saturday the 22nd of April 2017, resulting in a 10 day event, the same length as the infamous Gentse Feesten, ending with a terrific party on the last day at two locations simultaneously. The program of the ten days is an homage to everything and everyone who stood on our stage in the past two decades.
In the past two decades Kinky Star grew from a simple music centre into an organisation that is not only known within Gent, but far beyond its borders. It has been the stepping stone for many young, local and/or non-commercial musicians, enabling them to set foot in the music scene. Not only does Kinky Star provide the stage to the artists, we also consciously chose to offer all of the performances to the public for free, allowing people from Gent and elsewhere to enjoy and experience the shows, as well as broadening their musical horizon, and uniting all of them in their love for music. In the past year alone Kinky Star opened its doors for more than 300 bands and their audiences, making it into a unique place that cannot be compared to anything else in Belgium.
Even though our stage at the notorious Vlasmarkt is not bigger than an average shack, playing on it is considered to be a rite of passage for uprising bands. It should therefore also come as no surprise that 75% of Belgian bands on radio stations right now played at our venue at least once in their career. Examples are Evil Superstars, ‘t Hof Van Commerce, Gorki, Das Pop (back then as “Cabbage”), Kapitan Korsakov, Black Box Revelation, Soldier’s Heart, SX and many more.
Kinky Star continues to innovate and reinvent itself. In addition to the regular music shows we also support young artists and musicians, with projects such as K met de Kunst and JonGeduld. Sanne Werkers, the responsible for the JonGeduld project, claims that "as the beating heart of the Ghent Underground we want to program the big names of tomorrow, today.” The proof of success are artists such as Uberdope, Milo Meskens, Coely and Compact Disk Dummies, who all participated in the JonGeduld project.
Thanks to our more than one hundred volunteers, and following the D.I.Y. philosophy, the club has been able to keep its head above water in this all too stormy music scene.

Muziekcentrum Kinky Star bestaat in 2017 twintig jaar. Om onze verjaardag te vieren, halen we van donderdag 13 april 2017 tot en met zaterdag 22 april 2017 de alom bekende succesformule van de Gentse Feesten vroegtijdig uit haar winterslaap: tien dagen lang drie concerten per avond.
Het programma is een bloemlezing van wat de afgelopen twintig jaar op ons podium stond.
Kinky Star groeide in deze periode uit tot een jeugd- en muziekcentrum dat bekend is tot ver buiten de landsgrenzen. Ons podium op de beruchte Vlasmarkt mag dan wel kleiner zijn dan de gemiddelde Vlaamse koterij, spelen in Kinky Star wordt beschouwd als een rite de passage voor elke beginnende band. Het mag dan ook niet verbazen dat zowat 75% van uw dagelijkse portie muziek op de radio afkomstig is van een band die één keer of meer in Kinky Star op de planken stond, zoals bijvoorbeeld Evil Superstars, ‘t Hof Van Commerce, Gorki, Das Pop (toen nog als “Cabbage”), Kapitan Korsakov, Black Box Revelation, Soldier’s Heart, SX en vele anderen. Zo staan er jaarlijks meer dan driehonderd bekende en minder bekende namen uit uiteenlopende alternatieve en underground genres op de affiche.
Kinky Star blijft zichzelf heruitvinden en vernieuwen. Naast de reguliere concertwerking wordt er ook ingezet op het ondersteunen van kunstenaars en jonge muzikanten met projecten zoals K met de Kunst van Kinky en JonGeduld. Dat deze ondersteuning vruchten afwerpt, bewezen Uberdope, Milo Meskens, Coely en Compact Disk Dummies, die deelnamen aan het JonGeduld traject. “Als kloppend hart van de Gentse Underground willen we de grote namen van morgen vandaag al programmeren.” - (Sanne Werkers, medewerker JonGeduld)
Kinky Star kiest er bewust voor om alle optredens gratis aan te bieden zodat muziekmakers en -smakers elkaar op een laagdrempelige manier kunnen ontmoeten. Dankzij de meer dan honderd vrijwilligers die,,volgens de D.I.Y. filosofie, volledig kosteloos hun schouders zetten onder elk concert, kan de club al twintig jaar het hoofd boven water houden in het stormachtige muzieklandschap.

One of Germany's best-kept electronic secrets makes its move to surface overground: Fïx8:Sëd8 release their new album "Foren6" on May 19th 2017. It took the project of Martin Sane two self-released albums to become one of the hidden gems of the German Electronic scene. Boasting influences from Canada, Texas (Mentallo & The Fixer) and Sweden (Interlace), Fïx8:Sëd8 will impress electronic aficionados with complex sequences, retro-style voice samples and multivocal effects.
"Foren6" is released in two different versions: besides the regular album there will be a special “Formaldehyde Edition” box set with bonus CD “Formaldehyde”, postcards derived from the wonderful album artwork and a signed certificate, limited to 250 units only.
