Synopsis
Rinko (Asuka Kurosawa from Cold Fish) and Shigehiko (novelist Yuji Kotari) are a strange couple, whose physical mismatch (she a lithe beauty, he an overweight, balding, obsessive-compulsive neurotic) is reflected in the complete lack of intimacy between them. They connect as human beings, but they live more like friends than as lovers and lead nearly independent lives. Both seem comfortable with this coexistence, but the desires that lurk beneath its surface are brought out with the introduction of a third element into the equation. When Rinko receives a package of candid photographs of herself masturbating and the sender (played by Tsukamoto himself) contacts her with the threat of exposing them to her husband, she submits herself to the anonymous voyeur's sexual games. If she wishes to get hold of all the negatives and prints, Rinko is to comply with a set of assignments that place her constantly on the borderline between humiliation and pleasure - the voyeur knows exactly what Rinko's personal erotic fantasies are and makes her act them out one by one.

Waarom een restauratie?
'La meglio gioventù' was oorspronkelijk bedoeld als tv-serie, besteld bij producent BiBi Film door de Italiaanse openbare omroep RAI. Die vond het eindresultaat echter niet evident voor een groot publiek, en hield initieel dan ook de boot af. Overtuigd van de kwaliteit van de film, toonde de producent vervolgens de film aan de selectiecommittees van het Festival van Cannes. Die selecteerden hem prompt in de sectie Un Certain Regard, waar hij bovendien ook uitgeroepen werd tot Beste Film.
Een gezwinde bioscooprelease was het logische vervolg van dit succes in Cannes in 2003. 'La meglio gioventù' was echter opgenomen op pellicule maar afgemonteerd in televisiekwaliteit. Het is van die televisiemaster dat de 35mm-prints gemaakt werden voor Cannes en vervolgens ook voor de internationale cinemarelease destijds.
Voor het maken van de huidige digitale master is men voor het eerst teruggegaan naar het oorspronkelijke negatief van 'La meglio gioventù'. Zo kan je nu voor het eerst de film in volwaardige bioscoopkwaliteit zien.
Het succes:
'La meglio gioventù' vond overal ter wereld de weg naar de harten van het bioscooppubliek. En niet in het minst in België en Nederland, waar maar liefst 300.000 bezoekers de film in de zaal gingen ontdekken, en waar vervolgens nog eens 200.000 dvd-boxen over de toonbank gingen, een hallucinant aantal.

Synopsis:
'La meglio gioventù' vertelt het verhaal van een Italiaanse familie vanaf het einde van de jaren zestig tot vandaag. Nicola en Matteo zijn twee broers die aanvankelijk dezelfde dromen, boeken en vriendschappen delen. Wanneer ze Giorgia ontmoeten, een jong meisje dat lijdt aan psychische stoornissen, neemt hun toekomst noodgedwongen een andere wending. Nicola beslist psychiater te worden, Matteo geeft zijn studies op en meldt zich aan bij de politie.
De kleine en grote drama’s uit het leven van Matteo, Nicola en hun familie lopen parallel met gebeurtenissen die de recente Italiaanse geschiedenis tekenden: de overstroming van Firenze, het gevecht tegen de Siciliaanse maffia, de grote voetbalmatchen van de Italiaanse nationale ploeg, de studentenprotesten, het terrorisme van de Rode Brigades, de Fiat-crisis…
'La meglio gioventù' is het fresco van een voor zichzelf opkomende generatie die geprobeerd heeft niet toe te geven aan de wereld om hem een beetje beter te kunnen achterlaten.
