NEWS Lucy gets a sequel

Lucy gets a sequel

27th of June 2015, 17:40

Last summer’s Lucy surprised Hollywood as one of the biggest sleeper hits in recent cinematic memory. The film easily topped Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s Hercules on opening weekend. It also positioned leading lady Scarlett Johansson as a box-office force capable of carrying her own tentpole film. The movie’s story and execution was shaky from a scientific standpoint, but Johansson kicked some gangster tush. In the end, Lucy grossed $458.9 million around the globe.

When Lucy was conceived, the screenwriters must not have seen a sequel coming. No one imagined such financial success from a modestly budgeted ($40 million) movie. If you’ve seen the film, you know that it ended in such a way that a sequel wouldn’t make sense, especially if producers want to bring back Johansson. Her character, an unwilling drug-mule turned god-like creature, clearly has better things to do in the future. Even director Luc Besson conceded the unlikelihood of a sequel, saying “I don’t see how we can do one. It’s not made for that.”

Hollywood loves dollar signs, though, so they will find a way to make a follow-up work. At the CineEurope convention, EuropaCorp revealed Lucy 2 in their slate of projects undergoing development. They gave no indication of whether Johansson will return for the sequel. The first film didn’t make sense, and her return in the story would make even less sense. Does it even matter? Audiences love to see Johansson get physical and take down bad guys. That’s what she does best.

Believe it or not: there's another new face of Spiderman

27th of June 2015, 17:29

After months of rumors, speculation, and a few different "short lists," this week Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures officially announced who will be replacing 31-year-old Andrew Garfield as their teenage superhero Spider-Man. The role of Peter Parker has gone to 19-year-old British actor Tom Holland, who was previously best known for costarring in 2012's The Impossible, and for starring in Billy Elliot in the London production. Tom Holland is expected to almost immediately report to Atlanta to start filming his first film as Peter Parker, in next year's Captain America: Civil War (5/6/16). After that film wraps, the focus will turn to the new solo Spider-Man movie, which Sony Pictures (and Marvel) has scheduled for July 28, 2017.

That movie will be directed by Jon Watts, whose Sundance hit Cop Car is scheduled for release on August 7, 2015. Other young actors that Marvel and Sony considered before casting Tom Holland included Asa Butterfield (Hugo), Judah Lewis (this fall's Demolition), Matthew Lintz (Pixels), Charlie Plummer (HBO's Boardwalk Empire), and Charlie Rowe (TV's Red Band Society). Tom Holland won the role as Peter Parker after a series of screen tests, which included auditioning with Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans, under supervision from Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige and former Sony executive Amy Pascal. Other directors that Marvel and Sony considered before hiring Jon Watts included Jonathan Levine (Warm Bodies), Ted Melfi (St. Vincent), and codirectors John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein (Vacation)

Kristy And The Kraks do it again

27th of June 2015, 13:33

Resurfacing straight from their subterranean garage, Kristy And The Kraks once again do not fail to give proof of who the leader of the brat pack really is: by presenting their ever so long awaited first full length album «Smile», KATK do not only show their real sharp teeth, but above all a one record »hit parade« all by itself!

On «Smile» you’ll find their straight out smash hits (NIGHT TIME, RAY, BE NICE) combined with their beloved b-sides (NAUTILOID REEF, ZODIAC, YOU’RE SO COLD) and a number of brand new cuts (MOON, GHOUL, HAUNTED, SMILE). Like a nightmare in Whyte Boots, Kristy And The Kraks are a powerful twosome of the belladonna kind - brisk and dead dangerous at the same time, embodying the fruitful coexistence of high spirits and the deliberately cool.

What makes Kristy And The Kraks such a dream team, is that with Kate Kristal and Ana Threat you find two kindred spirits working both their tunes and their delivery in perfect sync, leaving no room for airs and graces or prima donna demeanor. The result is a highly seductive and threatening punk hybrid, far beyond flat and frivolous hoochie coochie pop.

Arrow Video releases Mona Lisa - On Blu-ray & DVD 6th July 2015

27th of June 2015, 08:13

Following their definitive release of The Long Good Friday, Arrow Video is thrilled to announce the individual release of Mona Lisa, Neil Jordan’s hard-edged yet romantically evocative British thriller which saw Bob Hoskins return to the gangster genre 5 years after playing Harold Shand. In Mona Lisa, Hoskins plays the small-time criminal forced to work for gangland kingpin Michael Caine as chauffeur to Cathy Tyson’s upmarket prostitute, Hoskins garnered an Oscar nomination as well as winning Best Actor awards at Cannes, the BAFTAs and the Golden Globes, and Mona Lisa remains one of his greatest roles.

This newly restored version will be available on dual format Blu-ray & DVD from 6th July 2015 and is also included as part of an exclusive limited-edition 3,000 run box set which includes both films alongside a 100-page hard-back book and an exclusive bonus disc featuring the Blu-ray premiere of John Mackenzie’s notorious farm safety film Apaches.

The Arrow Video restoration of The Long Good Friday and Mona Lisa is a fitting tribute to Bob Hoskins, a year after his sadly premature death, being that it features two of his greatest performances.

Synopsis

Five years after The Long Good Friday, Bob Hoskins returned to the gangster genre, but his character George is a mere underling this time, a chauffeur hired by a mesmerisingly slimy gangland kingpin (Michael Caine) to transport a high-class prostitute (Cathy Tyson) from client to client. When she enlists his help in tracking down an old friend, George finds himself exploring a hellish underworld that he never imagined existed.

Hoskins’ immensely complex, subtle and moving performance hoovered up almost every Best Actor award going (Cannes, a BAFTA, a Golden Globe) and remains one of his greatest roles – a man sucked by circumstance into a life of crime but still righteous enough to seize the opportunity to do good when it presents itself.

Director Neil Jordan (The Company of Wolves, The Crying Game) and co-writer David Leland (Made in Britain) achieve a perfect blend of hard-edged realism and unexpected fantasy, with the regular appearance of the Nat King Cole title song turning seedy British locations (Soho, Brighton) into something far more romantically evocative.

Special Features

· Brand new restoration sourced from the original camera negative, approved by director Neil Jordan and cinematographer Roger Pratt

· High Definition (1080p) Blu-ray presentation

· Original uncompressed PCM mono 1.0 sound

· Optional English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing
