Toen de excentrieke bestseller-auteur Michel Houellebecq zomaar verdween gedurende een tournee in 2011, begonnen geruchten de ronde te doen: hij zou zelfmoord gepleegd hebben, hij zou door aliens ontvoerd zijn, Al Qaeda…
De tv zenders, kranten, blogs, websites en radiozenders deden verslag van de gebeurtenis: de bekende schrijver Michel Houellebecq, winnaar van de prestigieuze Prix Goncourt in 2010 (en schrijver van het bekende boek ‘ELEMENTAIRE DEELTJES’) is verdwenen. Sommige journalisten gingen zelfs zo ver dat ze suggereerden dat Al-Qaeda erbij was betrokken. De daaropvolgende dagen bleef het nieuws geruchten en speculaties aanwakkeren in de literaire netwerken en de pers. Een brutale ontvoering? Een identiteitscrisis? Een plan om naar het buitenland te ontsnappen? Schizofrene waanzin? Houellebecq zelf heeft nooit een uitleg willen geven.
