"I am an eye. A mechanical eye. I am the machine that reveals the world to you as only the machine can see it." - Dziga Vertov ("Kino-Eye")

These words, written in 1923 (only a year after Robert Flaherty's Nanook of the North was released) reflect the Soviet pioneer's developing approach to cinema as an art form that shuns traditional or Western narrative in favor of images from real life. They lay the foundation for what would become the crux of Vertov's revolutionary, anti-bourgeois aesthetic wherein the camera is an extension of the human eye, capturing "the chaos of visual phenomena filling the universe." Over the next decade-and-a-half, Vertov would devote his life to the construction and organization of these raw images, his apotheosis being the landmark 1929 film The Man with the Movie Camera. In it, he comes closest to realizing his theory of 'Kino-Eye,' creating a new, more ambitious and more significant picture than what the eye initially perceives.

Now - thanks to the extraordinary restoration efforts of Lobster Films, Blackhawk Films® Collection, EYE Film Institute, Cinémathèque de Toulouse, and the Centre National de la Cinématographie - Flicker Alley is able to present the four films featured on Dziga Vertov: The Man with the Movie Camera and Other Newly-Restored Works in a brand-new, Blu-ray edition.

The Man with the Movie Camera (1929) - Named the best documentary film of all time by Sight and Sound, it is presented here in its entirety for the first time since its original premiere. Discovered and restored at EYE Film Institute in Amsterdam - with extensive digital treatment by Lobster Films - the 35mm print from which this edition is, in part, sourced is the only known complete version of the film.

Kino Eye/The Life Unexpected (1924) - A cinematographic poem in which Vertov lays the foundation of his Kino-Eye principles, the film shows the incredible force of his theories, but also the beauty and energy of a society fresh from revolution, ready to face the challenges of a difficult future.

Enthusiasm - The Symphony of the Donbass (1931) - One of the first Soviet sound films, it deals with the Five Year Plan of the late 1920s, and represents Vertov's radical attempt to link economic progress with the introduction of sound in cinema.

Three Songs About Lenin (1934) - Arguably Vertov's most personal work, the triptych celebrates the Soviet leader 10 years after his death as seen through the eyes of the people.

The Man with the Movie Camera and Kino Eye feature musical accompaniments by Alloy Orchestra and Robert Israel respectively, while original soundtracks have been restored for Enthusiasm and Three Songs About Lenin. Bonus features include Kino Pravda #21, a newsreel made in 1925 to mark the first anniversary of Lenin's death, as well as a booklet featuring information about Vertov's life and works.

*English and French subtitles available with original Russian intertitles.

The Long Good Friday - On Blu-ray & DVD and Limited Edition Box Se

17th of April 2015, 17:46

Arrow Video is thrilled to announce the definitive release of The Long Good Friday, John Mackenzie’s iconic thriller which is often cited as the best British gangster film of all time. This newly restored version will be available on dual format Blu-ray & DVD as a Steelbook from 4th May 2015 and also as part of an exclusive limited-edition 3,000 run box set which will include 1986’s Mona Lisa alongside a 100-page hard-back book and an exclusive bonus disc featuring the Blu-ray premiere of John Mackenzie’s notorious farm safety film Apaches.

This brand-new restoration, which was scanned from the original camera negative, with framing and colour grading supervised by the original cinematographer Phil Méheux, will feature a host of extras, combining the previously-released John Mackenzie commentary and making-of documentary Bloody Business with several brand new interviews.

Arriving on Blu-ray and DVD in a choice of two editions: either the Steelbook of The Long Good Friday on its own, or as part of a bigger box-set which includes Mona Lisa and an exclusive bonus disc featuring John Mackenzie's notorious farm safety film Apaches (Blu-ray premiere) with an archive Q&A with him and Bob Hoskins and extended interviews.

The upcoming Arrow Video restoration of The Long Good Friday and Mona Lisa is a fitting tribute to Bob Hoskins, a year after his sadly premature death, being that it features two of his greatest performances.

Synopsis

Harold Shand (Bob Hoskins) is a businessman with great ambitions. Spotting the development potential of London’s derelict Docklands area years before the Thatcher government, he tries to broker a deal with his American counterpart (Eddie Constantine) that will make them both millions. But who is killing Harold’s other associates and blowing up his businesses – and why?

Universally regarded as one of the greatest British gangster films ever made, The Long Good Friday rocketed Hoskins to international stardom. He’s given sterling support from Helen Mirren (as his upper-crust mistress), Paul Freeman (Raiders of the Lost Ark) and Derek Thompson (Casualty), and there’s even an early appearance from future James Bond Pierce Brosnan.

This special limited edition also includes Mona Lisa, Hoskins’ return to the gangster genre – although the kingpin here is played by a mesmerisingly slimy Michael Caine, with Hoskins merely George the chauffeur, transporting high-class prostitute (Cathy Tyson) from client to client. But when she enlists his help in tracking down an old friend, George finds himself exploring a hellish underworld that he never imagined existed.

Peek-A-Boo presents the new clip from Thurisaz

15th of April 2015, 22:36

THURISAZ's follow-up to 2011's "The Cimmerian Years" was produced by the band's guitarist Peter Theuwen together with Nik Mettez and Kris Belaen at the CCR studios (AXAMENTA, IN-QUEST, SUHRIM) in Zulte and mastered at the Tailor Maid Studio.

The band has the following to say about "The Pulse Of Mourning": "The Pulse of Mourning is a logical next step for Thurisaz after 2011's "The Cimmerian Years", but also a return to the rawness of 2007's "Circadian Rhythm". Once again we tried to create a very diverse album in which the many aspects of desillusion and bitterness are passing by."

''The Pulse Of Mourning" track listing:

01. Longing...

02....For A Change

03. Patterns Of Life

04. Tangram

05. Rays Of Light

06. One Final Step

07. Enslaved Dreams

08. In All Remembrance

09. Stargaze

Earlier this year THURISAZ released "Thurisaz: Live & Acoustic". The CD/DVD was recorded and filmed in front of a live audience and with a string-ensemble on the 1st of March 2014 at a sold-out show in 'GC Forum' in Wervik, the band's hometown. "Thurisaz: Live & Acoustic" was released on January 30 through Sleaszy Rider Records.
