Lucifer’s Aid, the solo dark/harsh electro project of the Swedish artist Carl Nilsson, has released its fifth studio album "Destruction" on Progress Productions. With its unique sound, inspired by the hard EBM, industrial, and dark wave scene, this is his darkest and most uncomplicated release to date, consisting of 10 tracks.

Mr. Nilsson is no stranger to the scene. He has been an electro icon for many years, participating in diverse projects. His music flirts with EBM, harsh and dark electro, and at times, incorporates industrial elements. You can sometimes hear echoes of Dive/The Klinik, as well as Front Line Assembly in his music.

Yet, it remains 'relatively' accessible, in the sense that it does not venture into the extreme fringes of the genre, which is adored by some and reviled by others.

Is this a groundbreaking album? Not entirely. Is it one that belongs in the collections of genre enthusiasts? Certainly. It is not run-of-the-mill like some other bands. "Without Me" and "Desire" are somewhat more subdued and less explosive, while songs like "Obsession" or "Be Afraid" sound more robust, aggressive, and genuinely dark, with a harsh edge.

What are the standout tracks? For me personally, the opener "Give You Control" sets the stage ablaze with its pounding rhythm. The heavily distorted guitars lurking in the background, akin to piercing eyes watching from the bushes, play a significant role.

And then there's "Structure Of Violence". A highly danceable rhythm, a supporting bassline maintaining the tempo, and synths that propel both melody and noise into the fray. This track has everything that gives a song that extra dark edge.

And as the absolute number one, "Into The Void". Solid, no-nonsense dark electro with a lot of guts.

Lucifer’s Aid's fifth album is certainly commendable. Give it a few listens. There are many musical layers in the songs. It is technically well-constructed. Is it a groundbreaking album? Just shy of it.

Lucifer’s Aid, het solo dark-/harsh electro project van de Zweed Carl Nilsson is toe aan het vijfde studioalbum, Destruction, uitgebracht op Progress Productions. Met zijn unieke geluid, geïnspireerd door de harde EBM-, industriële en dark wave-scene, is dit zijn donkerste en meest ongecompliceerde release tot nu toe. 10 nummers lang.

Mr Nilsson heeft het van geen vreemden. Hij is al vele jaren een electro-icoon die in heel diverse projecten speelt. Zijn muziek flirt met EBM, met harsh en dark electro, met een industrial inslag bij momenten. Je ontwaart er soms wat Dive/The Klinik in maar evengoed Front Line Assembly.

En toch blijft het ‘relatief’ toegankelijk. In de zin dat het niet in de extreme uithoeken zit van het genre, dat door sommigen aanbeden en door anderen verguisd wordt.

Is dit een wereldalbum? Toch niet helemaal. Is het ééntje dat thuishoort bij de liefhebbers van het genre: dat wel. Het is geen eenheidsworst zoals sommige andere bands wel wat hebben. Without Me en Desire zijn wat meer bedeesd en minder explosief, terwijl songs als Obsession of Be Afraid toch al heel wat robuuster, agressiever en echt dark, randje harsh klinken.

Wat zijn de uitschieters? Wel voor mij persoonlijk de opener Give You Control, die stevig beukend het spel in lichterlaaie zet. De zwaar overstuurde gitaren die vanuit de achtergrond als priemende ogen vanuit het struikgewas toekijken, zijn mee bepalend.

En dan Structure Of Violence. Een heel dansbaar ritme, een ondersteunende baslijn die er het temo inhoudt, en synths die zowel melodie als noise de wei in jagen. Deze heeft alles wat een song net dat donkere randje extra geeft.

En als absolute nummer één Into The Void. Stevige no-nonsence dark electro met een heel stevig stel ballen.

Lucifer’s Aid’s vrijfde album mag er zeker zijn. Gun het een paar luisterbeurten. Er zitten heel veel muziklae lagen in de songs. Technisch steekt het goed in elkaar. Is het een wereldalbum? Net niet.
