'Shield Pattern' is a newly formed project by the duo Claire Brentnall and Richard Knox. Their debut album 'Contour Lines' is a lovely surprise. They are a dynamic Manchester-based duo, using electronics and voice with plenty of imagination and talent. Chris and Cosey come occasionally to mind, but far from being a light-weight copy of them, Shield Pattern has a distinct identity.
Even though I'm not a great aficionado of (but I certainly like it) electronic music, it caught my attention
and I found many interesting details. It's an album that wins with repeated listening. They work a lot with clair-obscure qualities on their canvas. Claire's voice has an airy, transparent character, and a hypnotizing litheness that blends beautifully with the the sound-images that they create. Her voice not just a medium for the lyrics, but a handsome instrument in itself that contributes considerably to the variety of expression in their songs. What I like about the duo 'Shield Pattern' is that they are not a just another postindustrial doom and gloom project. They're something else. Recommended.
