Founded in 1989 by Peter Spilles and Dirk Scheuber, Project Pitchfork, a stalwart of the dark electronic scene, emerges from the shadows with their latest studio album, "Elysium." This marks the band's first offering since 2018's "Fragment," and it's clear that frontman Peter Spilles, following the departure of co-founder Dirk Scheuber in 2021, hasn't lost his touch.
While the band's signature sound of dark, electronic compositions remains, there's a subtle evolution on "Elysium." Spilles' recognizable vocals are still a guiding force, but the album feels tighter and more focused compared to previous works.
Catchy pop sensibilities shine through tracks like "Melancholia," "Learning To Live," and "Memories," reminiscent of Project Pitchfork's 2013 hit "Rain" from "Black." However, the band hasn't abandoned their club-friendly roots entirely. Tracks like "Transformation" and "Blind Mice" showcase a poppier side, while the pounding duet "Unity" searches for "the love of my life" with characteristic Project Pitchfork intensity.
Despite delving into weighty, metaphysical themes, the album retains a surprising light-heartedness. This duality is a trademark of Project Pitchfork's sound and a key to their enduring success.
"Elysium" serves as the final chapter in a trilogy that began with "Akkretion" and continued with "Fragment." It's a cosmic electro symphony that translates the music of the stars into a colossal, dark electronic cathedral.
The album opens with "Galaxies," a track that immediately confronts our finitude in the face of the vast universe. Yet, amidst the darkness, Project Pitchfork manages to sound thoughtful, warm, and hopeful.
For those seeking the limited edition colored vinyl + CD package, you're unfortunately out of luck – it sold out before release. However, the deluxe CD edition offers a second disc with remixes and a lavish 80-page book.
As a longtime fan, I can confidently say that "Elysium" is another triumph for Project Pitchfork. Whether you call it dark (electro) pop or electronic darkwave, this album is a masterfully crafted journey through sound, brimming with bravado and finesse.
Highly recommended!
