LLUMEN

As we at Peek-a-Boo are all about supporting the alternative and underground scene we thought it was only right to put our shoulders underneath the ambitious Dark Demons project initiated by BodyBeats Productions. As opportunities to play under the best conditions for smaller or lesser known bands out there are few and far between we feel the need to support this in the best way we can... So we decided to interview all the 2017 Dark Demon Night candidates and let them present themselves to you one-by-one.

Short Bio:
LLUMEN rose out of the ashes somewhere around 2010. Before that, Pieter Coussement, the driving force behind LLUMEN, was involved in several other projects. With LLUMEN, Pieter Coussement was able to explore a more structured musical realm, while at the same time incorporate the experiments he did as a researcher at the Institute of Psychoacoustics and Electronic Music. Throughout the years LLUMEN kept on defining its own sound that eventually led to a first digital EP released in 2016 on Alfa-Matrix. 2017 saw the release of the debut album “The Memory Institute” on which LLUMEN paints with a diverse palette, combining elements ranging from EBM, futurepop or even gothic.

The Dark Demons Interview:

Can you please introduce yourself/your band to our readers?

LLUMEN is a project that in the studio is mainly just me, Pieter Coussement. I’m however blessed with having a few good friends that are amazing musicians that have contributed over the years in helping LLUMEN out, both in the studio and live on stage. Today LLUMEN tries to bring a kind of dark electro with elements from EBM, futurepop gothic and industrial (the early kind).

When and why did you decide to start your own musical project?

From the first moment I heard Fad Gadget’s Back to Nature, I knew I wanted to make electronic music. This was at a really young age and I pursued it ever since. Throughout the years I got sucked into the darker side of electronic music and while I love to do very experimental things (which I did throughout my studies), I’m still a sucker for good melodies so that is basically where LLUMEN stands

Why did you choose this bandname and what does it mean (to you)?

First of I wanted to have a project name that had a positive name. No offence to all those dark and cruel inspired band names, but it just didn’t feel like me. Secondly, I wanted to pay tribute to the music that inspired me, so at the same time it is a hint to Front 242’s U-men.

What are the major topics you tend to write and compose about?

Most of my songs are lovesongs in one way or another. They can be fictional or very personal, although I never want to pinpoint which one’s are which. Writing songs is very intense to me and writing lyrics can really bring me down but at the end I hope that lyrically my songs always have a silver lining, even if so many of the protagonists in the songs die in one way or another.


Can you tell our readers why they should vote for you?

I really think that with LLUMEN we bring something interesting to the stage. Live we strive to bring something audio-visual where we try to tie all visuals aspects to the sound. We mostly program an entire show from scratch when we perform and always try to do something special.

Aangezien het bij Peek-a-Boo allemaal draait om het steunen van de alternative en underground scene, vonden we het niet meer dan normaal om onze schouders te zetten onder het ambitieuze Dark Demons project dat opgestart werd door BodyBeats Productions. Omdat er voor de kleinere of minder bekende bands weinig gelegenheden zijn om te spelen in goede omstandigheden, voelden we de nood dit zo goed mogelijk te ondersteunen... Dus beslisten we om alle kandidaten voor de Dark Demon Night te interviewen en hen zich een voor een te laten voorstellen.

LLUMEN verrees uit de assen ergens rond 2010. Tot dan was Pieter Coussement, de drijvende kracht achter LLUMEN, betrokken bij verschillende andere projecten. Met LLUMEN kon Pieter Coussement een meer gestructureerd muzikaal domein verkennen en tegelijkertijd de experimenten integreren die hij deed als onderzoeker aan het Institute of Psychoacoustics and Electronic Music. In de loop der jaren bleef LLUMEN een eigen sound ontwikkelen, wat uiteindelijk leidde tot een eerste digitale EP in 2016 bij Alfa-Matrix. Het debuutalbum "The Memory Institute" verscheen in 2017 en schildert met een heel diverse palet, door elementen te combineren die gaan van EBM tot futurepop of zelfs gothic.

Kan je jezelf/je band even voorstellen aan onze lezers?

LLUMEN is een project dat in de studio hoofdzakelijk uit mezelf bestaat, Pieter Coussement. Ik heb gelukkig enkele goede vrienden die schitterende muzikanten zijn en die in de loop der jaren bijgedragen hebben door LLUMEN te helpen, zowel in de studio als live op het podium. Vandaag probeert LLUMEN een soort dark electro te brengen met elementen van EBM, futurepop, gothic en industrial (de vroege soort).

Wanneer en waarom ben je zelf met een muzikaal project gestart?

Al van toen ik de eerste keer Back to Nature van Fad Gadget hoorden wist ik dat ik elektronische muziek wou maken. Ik was toen nog heel jong, maar ik ben daar altijd mee bezig geweest. In de loop der jaren werd ik meegezogen in de donkere kant van electronische muziek en hoewel ik graag heel experimentele dingen doe (wat ik ook tijdens mijn studies deed), heb ik nog altijd een zwak voor goede melodieën, dus dat is min of meer wat LLUMEN doet.

Waarom koos je deze naam voor je band en wat betekent die (voor jou)?

Ten eerste wilde ik een positieve naam voor mijn project. Met alle respect voor alle donker en wreed geïnspireerde namen van band, maar dat past gewoon niet bij mij. Ten tweede wilde ik een eerbetoon brengen aan de muziek die me inspireert, dus tegelijkertijd is het een hint in de richting van U-men van Front 242.

Wat zijn de belangrijsket thema's waarover je schrijft en componeert?

De meeste van mijn songs zijn op de een of andere manier liefdesliedjes. Ze kunnen ficitef zijn of erg persoonlijk, al wil ik nooit uitleggen welke song welk van beide is. Songs schrijven is voor mij heel erg intens en teksten schrijven kan me echt helemaal onderuit halen, maar uiteindelijk hoop ik dat in al mijn teksten een lichtpuntje zit, ook al sterven veel van de hoofdrolspelers van mijn songs op de een of andere manier.

Kan je onze lezers uitleggen waarom ze op jou moeten stemmen?

Ik denk echt dat we met LLUMEN iets interessants op het podium brengen. Live streven we naar iets audiovisueel en proberen we alle visuele aspecten op te hangen aan de sound. Meestal programmeren we een hele show from scratch als we optreden en we proberen elke keer iets speciaals te doen.
