As we at Peek-a-Boo are all about supporting the alternative and underground scene we thought it was only right to put our shoulders underneath the ambitious Dark Demons project initiated by BodyBeats Productions. As opportunities to play under the best conditions for smaller or lesser known bands out there are few and far between we feel the need to support this in the best way we can... So we decided to interview all the 2017 Dark Demon Night candidates and let them present themselves to you one-by-one.

So here we go!

Machines + vox + guitar… Dark Electro? Cyberclash? Darkwave? With a sprinkle of Industrial EBM and snippets of Synthpop and Cyberpunk… Don’t know, don’t care! White noise, black light, cyber-larsen: VUDUVOX are a tense two-piece crafting radical electro groove with an attitude.

The Dark Demons Interview:

Can you please introduce yourself/your band to our readers?

We are VUDUVOX, i.e. J-C VTH, formerly of Buzz, on machines and vox, and Olivier T., who also plays electro-perx in SA42, on guitar. We released our first album 'Vaudou électrique' on EKP in November 2014, whilst the second one 'Fétiche' is being completed at the moment.

When and why did you decide to start your own musical project?

VUDUVOX was born around 2011 from the ashes of Buzz. This name had become rather dated and I decided to inject some new blood. So I kept on writing new material and Olivier switched to guitar. Immediately, we were signed to the Italian label EKP, without even sending a demo, and Dirk Da Davo agreed to produce the first album, Len Lemeire, of Implant, proposed to master it, as did Maurizio Fasolo of Pankow.

Why did you choose this band name and what does it mean (to you)?

It was the result of brainstorming that took me about two years, honestly. I wanted a name that hadn't been used and abused and would appeal to audiences in any foreign language. I tried many and didn't want an English one, which, since I sing mainly in French, not of laziness but out of choice, would have been irrelevant. So I finally came up with one that sounded more ‘international’. Before we adopted it, it was tested on friends and fans, from Brazil, Belgium, and Germany to the UK and Russia, and their responses proved both enthusiastic and unanimous. ‘VUDUVOX’ apparently has a strong evocative power and it suits our music very fittingly; the 'vudu’ bit alludes to its dark, tribal and hypnotic approach whilst ‘vox’ obviously sounds colder, more electronic, minimalistic and machine-friendly.

Which are the major topics you tend to write and compose about?

Over the years this has included a gallery of portraits, ranging from Kennedy to Marinetti, that has expanded to Mishima and Maiakowski, i.e. leading — and sometimes controversial — figures of the twentieth century. The topics I tackle are generally very sombre, from 9-11 and the Islamist terror attacks on Paris, London, Madrid, Brussels, Cologne and Moscow, to name but a few, to cruelty to animals, war in the Balkans, Fukushima, Chernobyl, Orwell’s 1984 and the Berlin Wall, not to mention the Holocaust. So, all in all, I write about major events taking place, or having taken place, in Europe or countries dear to my heart. A handful of others are autobiographical, like “Charogne” about [my own] death. Quite a lot are also about electronic music, dancing and club atmospheres in general, as in “Bruit blanc (lumière noire)” and “Disco-démolition” on Vaudou électrique or “Destination BPM (pour la nation EBM)” on the forthcoming Fétiche. Our lyrics have more often than not been labelled ‘politically incorrect’ and they’re obviously not about peace and love or birds and bees: once a Punk, always a Punk !

Can you tell our readers why they should vote for you?

A tough one, since there are lots of brilliant acts in this pre-selection for Dark Demons… I guess they/you could vote for us because we bring that extra flavor. And you’ve got to be passionate about VUDUVOX: take it or leave it, love them or loathe them but our motto will always be “No compromise, no surrender !”

Aangezien het bij Peek-a-Boo allemaal draait om het steunen van de alternative en underground scene, vonden we het niet meer dan normaal om onze schouders te zetten onder het ambitieuze Dark Demons project dat opgestart werd door BodyBeats Productions. Omdat er voor de kleinere of minder bekende bands weinig gelegenheden zijn om te spelen in goede omstandigheden, voelden we de nood dit zo goed mogelijk te ondersteunen... Dus beslisten we om alle kandidaten voor de Dark Demon Night te interviewen en hen zich een voor een te laten voorstellen.

Kunnen jullie jezelf/jullie band even voorstellen aan onze lezers?

Wij zijn VUDUVOX, i.e. J-C VTH, vroeger bij Buzz, op machines en vox, en Olivier T., die ook electro-perx speelt bij SA42, op de gitaar. We brachten ons eerste album "Vaudou électrique" uit bij EKP in november 2014 en werken momenteel een tweede album af, "Fétiche".

Wanneer en waarom zijn jullie zelf met een muzikaal project gestart?

VUDUVOX ontstond rond 2011 uit de assen van Buzz. Die naam klonk intussen eerder gedateerd en ik besliste om wat vers bloed te injecteren. Dus ik bleef nieuw materiaal schrijven en Olivier schakelde over naar gitaar. Onmiddellijk konden we tekenen bij het Italiaanse label EKP, zelfs zonder een demo in te zenden, en Dirk Da Davo ging akkoord om het eerste album te producen. Len Lemeire, van Implant, stelde voor om het te masteren, net als Maurizio Fasolo van Pankow.

Waarom kozen jullie deze naam voor jullie band en wat betekent die (voor jullie)?

Die was het resultaat van ongeveer twee jaar brainstormen. Echt, ik wou een naam die nog niet gebruikt en misbruikt was en die het publiek in om het even welke andere taal zou aanspreken. Ik heb veel namen geprobeerd en wou geen Engelse naam, omdat die niet relevant zou zijn. Ik zing namelijk bijna uitsluitend in het Frans. Dat is geen luiheid, maar een bewuste keuze. Uiteindelijk vond ik een naam die meer 'internationaal' klinkt. Voor we die echt gingen gebruiken, hebben we die uitgetest op vrienden en fans, van Brazilië, België en Duitsland tot het Verenigd Koninkrijk en Rusland. Hun reacties waren enthousiast en unaniem. 'VUDUVOX' heeft blijkbaar een sterk evocatieve kracht en past heel goed bij onze muziek. Het deel 'vudu' verwijst naar de donkere, tribale en hypnotische aanpak, terwijl 'vox' duidelijk kouder, meer elektronisch, minimalistisch en machine-vriendelijk klinkt.

Wat zijn de belangrijsket thema's waarover jullie schrijven en componeren?

In de loop der jaren zijn dat onder meer een reeks portretten, gaande van Kennedy tot Marinetti, uitgebreid tot Mishima en Maiakowski, met andere woorden leidende - en soms ook controversiële - figuren uit de twintigste eeuw. De onderwerpen die ik aanpak zijn meestal heel somber, van 9/11 en de Islamitische terreuraanslagen op Parijs, Londen, Madrid, Brussel, Keulen en Moskou, om er maar enkele te noemen, tot wreedheid jegens dieren, oorlog in de Balkan, Fukushima, Chernobyl, Orwells 1984 en de Berlijnse muur, en niet te vergeten de Holocaust. Dus eigenlijk schrijf ik over alle grote gebeurtenissen, in heden en verleden, in Europa of in landen die mij na aan het hart liggen. Een handvol andere songs zijn autobiografisch, zoals "Charogne" over (mijn eigen) dood. Redelijk wat sons gaan ook over elektronische muziek, dansen en de sfeer in clubs in het algemeen, zoals "Bruit blanc (lumière noir)" en "Disco-démolition" op Vaudou électrique of "Destination BPM (pour la nation EBM)" op Fétiche, ons volgende album. Onze teksten zijn vaker wel dan niet 'politiek incorrect' genoemd en ze gaan duidelijk niet over vrede en liefde of de bloemetjes en bijtjes: eens een punker, altijd een punker!

Kunnen jullie onze lezers uitleggen waarom ze op jullie moeten stemmen?

Dat is een moeilijke, want er zijn veel schitterende acts in deze preselectie voor Dark Demons... Ik denk dat ze op ons moeten stemmen omdat wij net dat beetje meer brenegn. En je moet gepassioneerd zijn door VUDUVOX: te nemen of te laten, je houdt ervan of je haat het, maar ons motto zal altijd zijn "No compromise, no surrender!"
