Success is a dangerous beast. When the duo from Baltimore had a smashing hit with the album Teen Dream, Victoria Legrand and Alex Scally immediately felt that they didn’t want to live in a glam world.The two wanted everyone to hear their songs, but they did not want to see their faces on all sorts of magazines. Therefore their fourth album Bloom was a return to their original sound and also a farewell to fame. Depression Cherry is a continuation of that, although it took three years before we could enjoy their delicious dream-pop.
Expect no ready-made radio hits (because if you don’t count Beyond Love and 10:37, you won’t find them here), as almost all tracks are long-drawn-out songs that hover between the 4-AD melancholy of Cocteau Twins and contemporary (almost minimalistic) electro indie-pop. The strength of this album lies in the mystical atmosphere that would fit Twin Peaks perfectly, without sounding outdated.
The average indiefan will not like to hear that Beach Bouse has returned to atmospheric sounds in which you occasionally can recognize a poppy melody, but music fans who like some experimentation (without being too difficult) will welcome this. This American duo is certainly not the genius band that some reviewers make of them, but they certainly are creators of atmospheric dream-pop!

Succes is een gevaarlijk beest. Toen het duo uit Baltimore met de hit-cd Teen Dream uit zijn voegen barstte, grepen Victoria Legrand en Alex Scally onmiddellijk in. De twee wilden wel dat de hele wereld hun liedjes kon horen, maar ze hadden geen zin om met hun gezicht op allerlei bladen terecht te komen. Hun vierde cd Bloom was daarom een terugkeer naar hun oorspronkelijke geluid en tevens een afscheid van de roem. De nieuwe Depression Cherry is daar niet meer dan een vervolg op, ook al duurde het drie jaar vooraleer we ons weer konden laven aan hun bedwelmende dreampop.
Verwacht geen kant-en-klare radiohitjes (want op Beyond Love en 10:37 na, vind je die hier niet), wel lang uitgesponnen songs die zweven tussen de 4-AD-melancholie van de Cocteau Twins en eigentijdse (bijna minimalistische) electro-indiepop. De kracht van deze plaat zit hem in de mystieke sfeer die perfect in Twin Peaks zou passen, zonder dat ze daarom verouderd klinkt.
De doorsnee indiefan zal het misschien niet leuk vinden om te horen dat Beach Bouse terugkeert naar atmosferische klanken waarin je af en toe een melodietje kan herkennen, maar muziekfans die niet vies zijn van wat experiment (zonder dat het moeilijk wordt), zullen dit alleen maar toejuichen. Dit Amerikaanse duo is zeker niet de geniale band die sommige recensenten ervan maken, maar als makers van sfeervolle dreampop mogen ze er gerust wezen!
