For those who would doubt: good goth rock concerts are still organized in Belgium. On a rainy Friday night, we saw two goth rock bands at the B52 (Belgian venue-ed.) Each is in one way or another a pioneer. Lizard Smile because it is one of the first (and unfortunately one of the few) Flemish goth rock acts, and 1919 as co-inventor of the genre.

The history of the Belgian goth rock trio began more than fifteen years ago. Meanwhile, Albi, Strobo and Beat Nick shared the stage with their idols The Mission and they played many gigs abroad. Recently, they were in London, but this time the West Flemish Eernegem was their playground! The B-52 is not very big, but clearly large enough for a crowd, interested in an evening with old gothic rock. Lizard Smile can be described as a cross-fertilization of Bauhaus (that voice!) and the old sound of The Sisters Of Mercy.

The trio began with Damage from the last mini-album State Of Void, produced by Eric Van Wonterghem. It is never easy for a band to start the evening (especially when the next room is a cozy café), but the trio immediately came up with a sound that tempted the audience. Once in a while you heard a small technical defect, nontheless, Lizard Smile proved that it one of the best Flemish goth rock bands, even if there is no real competition. We heard some old songs (Say A Prayer of the Green And Gold tape), but also a brand new composition that was simply titled (well) Untitled. If you missed them, mark 11th March on your calendar as Lizard Smile will play at Kinky Star in Ghent.

1919 was founded in 1980. Just like many bands that are around for almost four decades, many things have happened. Some members left the band (Mark Manning went to Zodiac Mindwarp and Aky joined Southern Death Cult). The motive behind this band from Bradford always was guitarist Mark Tighe. Many times he re-established 1919, and the current lineup consists of original drummer Mick Reed, bassist Karl Donner and the charismatic singer Rio Goldhammer. This year, the legendary punk goth act has something to celebrate: the brand new EP Death Note.

1919 didn’t save the classics for the end, but started the set with Control: a track of their first mini-LP Machine. Actually, almost all tracks of the 1983 album were played (Alien, The Ritual and Machine). Retrieved from those same old (delicious ) days were: After The Fall, Caged, Cry Wolf and Tear Down The Walls. Of course, new songs were performed as well, and they perfectly fit the many classics. The set of 1919 at the B52 was not one of a band that wants a to grab some success,coming from melancholy and bygone memories. The sound was pure, energetic and at times as good as that of Killing Joke in the glorious early days. Perhaps more punk than goth, but 1919 is far from finished !

Voor wie er nog aan mocht twijfelen: er worden nog steeds goede gothrockconcerten in België georganiseerd. Op een druilerige vrijdagavond zagen we twee gothrockbands aan het werk in de West-Vlaamse B52. Elk is op één of andere manier een pionier. Lizard Smile omdat het één van de eerste (en jammer genoeg één van de weinige) Vlaamse gothrockacts is en 1919 omdat het gewoonweg het genre mee heeft helpen uitvinden.

De geschiedenis van het Belgische trio gaat meer dan vijftien jaar terug. Albi, Strobo en Beat Nick kunnen ondertussen zeggen dat ze op het podium stonden met hun goden The Mission en allerlei optredens in het buitenland hebben gespeeld. Onlangs nog in Londen, maar ditkeer was het West-Vlaamse Eernegem aan de beurt! Het zaaltje van de B52 is niet bijster groot, maar al gauw bleek dat er toch heel wat mensen zin hadden in een avondje ouderwetse gothrock. Zo kan je Lizard Smile ook het best omschrijven, als een kruisbestuiving tussen Bauhaus (die stem!) en het oude geluid van The Sisters Of Mercy.

De set begon met Damage uit het laatste (door Eric Van Wonterghem geproduceerde) mini-album State Of Void. Het is nooit gemakkelijk voor een band om de avond te openen (zeker niet als er zich naast de zaal ook een gezellig cafeetje bevindt), maar het trio zette meteen een geluid neer waar je geen speld tussen kon krijgen (op af en toe een kleine technisch mankementje na). We hoorden oude nummers (Say A Prayer uit de Green And Gold-tape), maar ook een fonkelnieuwe compositie die tot nu de titel (tja) Untitled kreeg. Lizard Smile is gewoon één van de beste Vlaamse gothrockbands, ook al is er weinig of geen concurrentie. Wie ze gemist heeft, kan ze op 11 maart in de Gentse Kinky Star aan het werk zien. 

1919 is in 1980 opgericht. Net zoals heel wat bands die bijna vier decennia lang meedraaien, is er ook met deze groep het een en ander gebeurd. Heel gauw verlieten enkele leden de band (Mark Manning trok naar Zodiac Mindwarp en Aky naar Southern Death Cult). De drijfveer achter deze band uit Bradford bleef altijd gitarist Mark Tighe. Hij richtte de groep verschillende keren opnieuw op en de huidige bezetting bestaat uit de originele drummer Mick Reed, bassist Karl Donner en de charismatische zanger Rio Goldhammer. Dit jaar heeft de punkgothlegende iets te vieren, want met Death Note heeft ze een gloednieuwe ep uitgebracht, en daar hoort een toer bij.

1919 spaarde de klassiekers niet voor het einde en zette meteen met Control de toon, de track die op hun eerste mini-lp Machine verscheen. Eigenlijk werd bijna de hele plaat uit 1983 gespeeld, want ook Alien, The Ritual en Machine passeerden de revue. Uit diezelfde oude (heerlijke) doos kwamen ook After The Fall, Caged, Cry Wolf en Tear Down The Walls. Uiteraard mocht ook het nieuwe werk niet ontbreken en dat paste mooi bij de klassiekers. De set die 1919 in de B52 speelde was allesbehalve die van een band die na al die jaren nog een graantje wil meepikken van succes dat op melancholie en vervlogen herinneringen teert. Het geluid was puur, energiek en bij momenten even goed als dat van Killing Joke in hun glorieuze begindagen. Misschien meer punk dan goth, maar 1919 is nog lang niet uitgeteld!
