The Clavin sisters from the L.A cult art-punk band Mika Miko formed their own pop and surf punk band Bleached in 2011. A little later they were joined by bass player Micayle Grace and recently by drummer Nick Pillot. The debut album Ride Your Heart from 2013 had some nice 60s influencies (think of 60’s girl bands like the Shangri-Las with Ramones-like tunes and loads of fuzzy guitars and surf pop punk).

In April, Bleached released its first sophomore album Welcome The Worms. It sounds much more polished and is certainly very personal. Welcome The Worms is a very ambitious and fantastic sounding punky record with nice poppy tunes, but without any loss of energy or intensity. It was produced by Joe Chicarelli (who is known for his work with Morrissey, The Strokes, U2, The White Stripes and Beck). All 10 tracks on Welcome The Worms were chosen from demos that the sisters and bass player Micayla wrote in a remote house in the wilderness of Joshua Tree, away of any distractions. The songs were given an extremely clean and powerful production and the final result is a superb Californian punk pop album with great potential. Welcome The Worms gives the band its own identity and a fantastic fresh start. Jennifer Clavin’s singing often reminds to Suzi Quatro or Joan Jett, but the tempo of the singing is at least twice as high! The lyrics are very straightforward and they frequently deal with emotional trauma’s (I can’t keep wasting my emotions on you, as sung by Jennifer Clavin) and are immersed in a tasty and catchy pop punk sauce.

In some of the songs we hear influences of Fleetwood Mac and Heart, and even Blondie and Nirvana (listen to the grungy Desolate Town). All tracks sound raw, dirty, cheeky and sassy and they are backed with that great wall of fuzzy guitars, completed in a perfect way with great bouncing and steering baselines by Micayla and Nick’s instinctive fast drumming. The upbeat tracks continiously take you in an unstoppable musical vortex, they crawl into your brain in a way you just can’t resist, in short: they are like a bomb loaded with musical energy!

During tonight’s gig at L’ Aeronef in Lille (France) Bleached focused mainly on the tracks of its sophomore album. My personal favourites: Wednesday Night Melody (check out the great, but creepy video of this song in which the band members try to turn a dead Jennifer into a performing puppet on a string), Sleepwalking (which refers to a life on autopilot), the earworm Sour Candy and the great mesmerising opening track of the new album Keep on Keepin’ On.

The new songs were alternated with some of the best tracks from the debut album: a fantastic version of the catchy and baseline driven Dead in Your Head, as well as the punky tracks Next Stop and Looking for a Fight.

Although Bleached’ increasing popularity and the energetic and exhausting performance, all band members had enough energy to mingle with the audience. These girls (and guy) are still enough “down to earth” to have a chat with the fans and to sign the album. And by the way, to my humble opinion, buying one of the albums (or both) is a very wise decision and investment since it will surely give you a lot of musical pleasure for a very, very long time.

De zusjes Clavin van de cultartpunkband Mika Miko uit Los Angeles, richtten in 2011 hun eigen pop- en surfpunkband op onder de naam Bleached. Iets later werd die aangevuld met bassiste Micayla Grace en sinds kort ook met de nieuwe drummer Nick Pillot.

De eerste CD Ride Your Heart uit 2013 had nog sterke sixtiesinvloeden (denk aan girlbands zoals The Shangri-las, maar dan wel met zeer veel fuzzy gitaren en de nodige surfpop).

Op 1 april is de tweede CD Welcome The Worms uitgebracht. Die klinkt een stuk gepolijster en persoonlijker en het is een heel ambitieus en punky album met een behoorlijke poppy-insteek zonder ook maar één moment aan energie wordt ingeboet. Het album is geproduced door Joe Chiccarelli (bekend bij o.a. Morrissey, The Strokes, U2, The White Stripes en Beck). De 10 tracks van deze CD zijn gefilterd uit een veelvoud van demo’s die de zussen Clavin en Micayla in een afgelegen huisje in de Joshua tree-wildernis in Zuid-Californië hebben gemaakt. Ze zijn voorzien van een bijzonder cleane en krachtige productie en het resultaat is een erg knappe Californische punkpop-cd met een berg potentie. Bovendien geeft dit nieuwe album Bleached als het ware een eigen identiteit en een uitstekende nieuwe start. De zang doet vaak denken aan Suzi Quatro en Joan Jett van the Runaways, maar dan wel met een tempo dat op zijn minst dubbel zo hoog ligt.

De lyrics zijn rechtdoorzee en gaan vaak over emotionele trauma’s (I can’t keep wasting my emotions on you, dixit Jennifer Clavin), overgoten met een overheerlijke catchy poppunksaus. De tracks bevatten invloeden van Fleetwood Mac en Heart, maar ook van Blondie en Nirvana (beluister het grungy Desolate Town). Alle tracks zijn van begin tot eind rauw, smerig, onstuimig en erg brutaal, en steeds is er die overweldigende wall of fuzzy guitars, perfect aangevuld met de stuiterende en sturende baslijnen van Micayla en de instinctieve snelle drumpartijen van Nick. De upbeatsongs nemen je continu mee in een niet te stoppen muzikale stroomversnelling. Ze wurmen zich als het ware in je brein, ze zijn werkelijk onweerstaanbaar, en vooral: ze zitten barstensvol energie die aanspreekt!

Het optreden van vanavond bestond voor een groot deel uit tracks van het nieuwe album (7 van de 10). Mijn favorieten: vooral Wednesday Night Melody (check de geweldige, maar creepy video waarop de bandleden een dode Jennifer als een marionet een live-optreden laten doen!), Sleepwalking (dat refereert naar een leven op autopiloot), de oorwurm Sour Candy en de geweldige hypnotische opener van zowel de nieuwe cd als het optreden: Keep On Keepin’ On. Voor de rest enkele van de beste tracks uit het debuutalbum, zoals het catchy en het met baslijn aangestuurde Dead In Your Head en de punky tracks Next Stop en Looking For A Fight.

Na een bijzonder energiek optreden voelden de bandleden zich ondanks de stijgende populariteit nog steeds niet te beroerd of te vermoeid om ook nog met het aanwezige publiek in interactie te gaan en persoonlijk bij de merchandising plaats te nemen om de nieuwe cd te verkopen, en (indien gewenst) te tekenen. Wie op dit aanbod inging, heeft naar mijn gevoel een zeer goede beslissing genomen. Een album van deze band zorgt ongetwijfeld nog een heel lange tijd voor plezier.
