Tina Mar and Stefan Scott, Caput Medusae, treat us to a new six-track mini-album, Schwarzschild. It’s a musical journey that moves between darkwave, occasionally breathing a minimalist atmosphere, and at times drifting into post-punk territory.

The duo opens the album with a purely instrumental intro, The Creation Prelude—as minimalistic as possible. A mournful bassline is drenched in analog-sounding synths, while the rhythm section is reduced to a wandering sweep. There’s very little going on—and that’s precisely what makes it so beautiful.

The title track, Schwarzschild, wraps itself in pure minimalism. The combination of the two vocal timbres gives the piece an atmospheric edge. Synths weave their way through the song in a captivating sonic display. It’s an irresistible eighties sound you can truly savor.

A step further into darkwave comes Lone: dark and brooding down to the finest detail. Without ever trying to overwhelm, the track carries a slightly heavier pulse. Stefan takes charge of the vocals here.

Then comes, for me, the most compelling track on Schwarzschild. This is post-punk as it should be: a voice run through the wringer (thanks, Tina), a sharp tempo, and bone-dry analog drum sounds. The pace kicks up, inviting you to let loose and throw yourself into a proper pogo. A clear highlight that could easily set many a dark dancefloor ablaze.

We shift down a few gears with Sound of Space, which once again draws from eighties influences. It flows gently, swaying and rocking on soft tones—far from boring, to be clear.

Sonatina in A Minor closes the album as track six. An outlier that defies easy description. A dark gothic sound that will appeal to darkwave enthusiasts—one of the bleakest tracks on the record. And frankly, they could make many more like this. If you enjoy slowly, almost torturously winding your way across a dancefloor, this one’s for you.

With Schwarzschild, Caput Medusae deliver a strong mini-album. It draws from a variety of dark musical veins—and that’s something to admire.

Tina Mar en Stefan Scott, Caput Medusae, verblijden ons met een nieuw, zes songs tellend mini-album: Schwarzschild. Een muzikale tocht die beweegt tussen darkwave, bij vlagen een minimal-sfeer ademt en soms richting postpunk afdwaalt.

Het duo opent dit album met een puur muzikale intro: The Creation Prelude. Zo minimalistisch mogelijk. Een treurende baslijn, overgoten met analoog klinkende synths. De ritmesectie beperkt zich tot een verloren gelopen sweepslag. Weinig om het lijf. En laat dat nu net zo mooi zijn.

De titelsong Schwarzschild hult zich in pure minimal. De combinatie van de twee stemgeluiden geeft het geheel een sferische toets. Synths slingeren zich in een muzikaal schouwspel doorheen de song. Eighties-sound om duimen en vingers bij af te likken.

Een stapje meer richting darkwave met Lone. Donker en duister tot in het kleinste detail. Zonder overdonderend te (willen) zijn, dreunt deze song wat steviger voorbij. Stefan neemt de vocalen voor zijn rekening.

En dan, voor mij het meest pakkende nummer van deze Schwarzschild. Postpunk zoals het hoort. Een stem die door de mangel is gehaald (thx Tina), een snedig tempo en analoge drumsounds die kurkdroog zijn. Tempo de hoogte in. Losgaan en een pogootje links en rechts. Een eerste hoogtepunt dat, naar mijn aanvoelen, menige donkere dansvloer wel in lichterlaaie kan zetten.

Terug een paar versnellingen lager met Sound Of Space, dat weer put uit de eighties-sounds. Het kabbelt voorbij, het wiegt en waggelt op zachte tonen. Niet saai, voor alle duidelijkheid.

Sonatina In A Minor is nummer zes. Een buitenbeentje dat in geen twee woorden te vangen is. Een donkere gothic-sound die de darkwave-liefhebbers zal bekoren. Eén van de donkerste nummers. En van dit soort mogen ze er nog vele maken. Als je ervan houdt om tergend traag over een dansvloer te kronkelen, dan is dit er ééntje voor jou!

Caput Medusae levert een sterk mini-album af. Het tapt uit verschillende donkere muzikale vaten, en dat is bewonderenswaardig.
