The American progrockband Caspian just released their latest CD Dust and Disquiet and the European part of the extensive tour has the always charming Jo Quail as support act, and so we were at the cozy and sold out Minardschouwburg in Ghent.

Jo Quail appeared in a static way on stage, dressed with a long black robe. It was the moment at where my neighbors whispered that they were lucky to see something beautiful as the first act, of course accompanied with the obligatory chuckles. However, the venue was completely quiet when Jo started Laurus, a stunning opener in which the rhythmic strumming on the cello systematically got more and more layers (via looping techniques), and developed into an impressive sound collage with an explosive end. By this, the lovely British lady was able to show in a few minutes her brilliance and virtuosity. 

However, Jo did not play on safe, as she added new songs such as Salamander or Gold, while the extremely quiet Southwest Night became the calm moment of the evening. With her fifth number, Adder Stone, her performance ended, but because her tracks are quite long, we could enjoy 40 minutes of beauty.

Adder Stone is taken from her second CD Caldera and it was definitely one of the audience favorites, because of the explosiveness and the electrical and experimental sounds that during one song Jo conjures from her cello. Although this was a brilliant version, where I heard sound details I never heard on the CD before, it were her new songs that charmed me the most. After a firmly applause, this beautiful lady disappeared quickly behind the scenes. It was also the time when my neighbors started to chat again, they were indeed lucky to see a beautiful lady, but she was also exceptionally good!

After a short break it was time for Caspian, during one and a half hour they would enjoy us with an anthology of their albums, albeit there was an expanded selection from the new album Dust and Disquiet. The five piece combo were standing on a stage with a minimum of lights, and they started with a brilliant new song Darkfield. This slowly accumulating instrumental song with its delightful percussion and a deafening guitar sound wall, was the ideal musical start for an excellent gig.

The band was delighted with the beautiful location, and it was clear that the band would give everything they could. Their heavy music was supported with the beautiful ambient lighting that is based on the cover of their last album, and of course also the obligatory flashlights were included.

The live versions of the songs of the new album could convince me, including a stunning version of Echo and Abyss, and the melodic Rioseco that is build up slowly. The set was solid, including the magisterial closing Arcs Of Command. After 10 minutes the members put down one by one their instruments, and by the time the last member disappeared the sole thing you could hear was a single drum hit that became the final sound of a blessed night.

However, a wildly enthusiastic crowd succeeded in the fact that the band was willing to do an encore. They choose for a beautiful version of Sycamore of the album Tertia, and again this time the gentlemen put down their instruments one by one, but only to form a five-man percussion combo so that everything ended in a delicious (percussion) explosion. A great finale for a perfect evening!

De Amerikaanse progrock band Caspian heeft met Dust and Disquiet net een nieuwe cd uit en om die te promoten werd een uitgebreide tour opgezet, waarbij in het Europese luik de immer charmante Jo Quail het voorprogramma mocht verzorgen. Zo ook in de gezellige en uitverkochte Minardschouwburg in Gent.

Jo Quail kwam statig in een lange zwart kleed het podium op, hetgeen mijn buren deed fluisteren dat ze geluk hadden met zo’n mooi voorprogramma, en dat werd natuurlijk vergezeld met het obligatoire gegniffel. De zaal was echter muisstil toen Jo Laurus inzette, een prachtige opener waarbij het ritmische getokkel op de cello stelselmatig meer en meer lagen kreeg (via looping technieken), en uitgroeide tot een impressionante geluidscollage dat explosief aan zijn einde kwam. En zo zette deze mooie Britse dame in enkele minuten tijd haar genialiteit en virtuositeit in het daglicht. Het applaus loog er dan ook niet om.

Ze speelde nochtans niet op veilig, want nieuwe nummers zoals Salamander of Gold werden eveneens op het publiek losgelaten, terwijl het uiterst rustige South West Night voor de kalme noot van de avond zorgde. Met haar vijfde nummer, Adder Stone, zat haar optreden er meteen al op, maar aangezien haar tracks zeer uitgesponnen zijn, konden we toch meer dan 40 minuten genieten.

Adder Stone uit haar tweede CD Caldera was zeker één van de publieksfavorieten, wegens het explosieve karakter en de snoeiharde, experimentele geluiden die Jo tijdens één nummer uit haar cello tovert. Ofschoon dit een briljante versie is waarbij ik geluiden hoorde die ik nooit eerder op CD had waargenomen, waren toch het haar nieuwe nummers die mij het meest charmeerden. Na een relatief verlegen (maar stevig) applaus, verdween deze schitterende deerne snel terug achter de coulissen. Het was ook het moment waarop mijn buren al grinnikend tegen elkaar zegden dat ze écht geluk hadden gehad, het was niet alleen een mooi voorprogramma, maar ook ontzettend goed!

Na een korte pauze was het tijd voor Caspian, die ons gedurende anderhalf uur lang met een bloemlezing uit al hun albums verwenden, weliswaar met een iets uitgebreidere selectie uit het nieuwe album Dust and Disquiet. Het vijfkoppige combo stond op een schaars verlicht podium en opende de set met het briljante nieuwe nummer Darkfield. Met dit langzaam opgebouwde instrumentale nummer met zalige percussie en een loeiharde, toch tranceopwekkende gitaar geluidsmuur, werd de toon van de avond gezet.

Duidelijk in hun nopjes met de mooie locatie gaf de groep het beste van zichtzelf. Hun stevige muziek werd ondersteund door mooie sfeerverlichting die gebaseerd is op de hoes van hun laatste album, en uiteraard waren ook de obligatoire flash lights aanwezig.

Het nieuwe album kon me live ontzettend bekoren, met onder meer een prachtige versie van Echo and Abyss en het langzaam opbouwende en melodieuze Rioseco. De set was stevig, tot en met de magistrale afsluiter Arcs Of Command waarbij na een kleine 10 minuten durende bezwering de leden één per één hun instrumenten neerlegden om afbouwend tot een enkelvoudige drumslag een zalig avondje af te sluiten.

Een laaiend enthousiast publiek slaagde er echter in om de band nog een keer te laten terugkeren voor een lekker uitgebreide en prachtige versie van Sycamore van het album Tertia, waarbij ook ditmaal de heren één per één hun instrumenten neerlegden, maar deze keer om de percussie te versterken met een heerlijke percussie-explosie als orgelpunt plaatsten van deze grandioze avond.
