Britta Pirkko talked to Ost+ Front singer Herrmann during the grandiose ULTRA-Tour.

Hermann, Ost+Front is on a tour through Europe with the latest album ULTRA. How has the tour been going? Any highlights so far? And which upcoming shows are you looking forward to the most?
Sweden was a highlight for us. We have played in that wonderful country for the first time. And as always, Russia was a highlight for us as well. It’s so crazy to play there. Now we are looking forward to play our first show in the Netherlands. Neuken in de Keuken (laughs).

Are there countries/cities you’d like to perform one day?
I would like to play throughout Scandinavia one day. Especially Norway attracts me. And France would be great as well. A great country to tour. I played lots of gigs there. But not with Ost+Front so far. But it will not take so long until we play there, I think. You know what? We never played in Austria. That’s really strange. Austria is like a part of Germany. The part nobody likes. Like Bavaria (laughs). Just a joke. I love Bavaria. Viva la Weißwurst!

Your album ULTRA is quite a success! Have you expected this kind of positive response? Are you satisfied with your work so far?
Yes, this was planned. Everything I do is planned. And I’m never satisfied with anything. It’s like a sickness. Controlling and planning everything and never happy with the result. But it’s always the same, so it doesn’t bother me at all.

So tell us, what’s coming next? Any new single, videos?
Yes, there will be a single in autumn. A new video will be released at the same time. Maybe there will be an EP, too, next year. It’s simply a plan, nothing fixed.

If you should describe Ost+Front to a stranger by playing only one single song, which one would you play and why?
I would play Denkelied. It’s a good song to describe the whole thing. Heavy guitars, great melodies, strange lyrics. A little bit of everything.

When you are touring the world, you meet your fans. What feeling is it to meet so many people who know all your songs and visit as many of your gigs as possible?
That’s great, but I do this for 20 years now. So it’s a well-known feeling. And I like it very much. It’s great to meet all the fans all over the world.

What’s the best way to relax between so many shows? Do you have a secret?
Sex is quite good. A lot of nasty sex. It’s fun, too. A lot of nasty fun.

What’s your favorite tour food? Choose one out of these 5: Pizza, burgers, salad, biscuits or trying out local food
Local food. And local beer. I try out both. Wherever I am. OK, I was not in Cambodia and I am not sure if I would try the roasted bird spiders. They look disgusting in the documentaries!

At the end of our interview: Imagine a pixie would appear. So please, make a wish for the band!
Give us some money so that we can make better videoclips and do better promotion. Ost+Front could be much bigger when there would be more money to promote the whole thing.

Ost+Front toert door Europa. Op 22 april kan je de band in de B52 in Eernegem zien. Britta Pirkko had een gesprekje met zanger Herrmann.

Hallo Hermann, Ost+Front toert door Europa met het recente album ULTRA. Hoe ging het tot nu toe? Wat zijn de hoogtepunten en naar welke shows kijk je het meest uit?
Zweden was een hoogtepunt voor ons. We hebben voor het eerst in dat prachtige land gespeeld. En zoals altijd, was ook Rusland een hoogtepunt voor ons. Het is zo gek om daar te spelen. Nu kijken we uit naar onze eerste show in Nederland. Neuken in de keuken (lacht).

Zijn er landen/steden waar je nog zou willen spelen?
Ik zou in heel Scandinavië willen spelen. Vooral Noorwegen trekt me aan. En Frankrijk zou ook geweldig zijn. Een groot land. Ik speelde er al vaak, maar nog niet met Ost+Front. Maar het zal niet zo lang duren, denk ik. Weet je wat? We hebben nooit in Oostenrijk gespeeld. Dat is echt vreemd. Oostenrijk is bijna een deel van Duitsland. Een deel waarvan niemand houdt, zoals Beieren (lacht). Gewoon een grapje. Ik hou van Beieren. Viva la Weißwurst!

Jullie album ULTRA is een succes! Had je zo’n positieve reactie verwacht? Bent je met je werk tevreden tot nu toe?
Ja, dat was zo gepland. Alles wat ik doe is gepland. En ik ben nooit tevreden. Het is als een ziekte. De controle en de planning,en nooit gelukkig zijn met het resultaat. Maar het is altijd hetzelfde, dus stoort me dat niet.

Vertel eens wat er nog zal komen? Een nieuwe single of een video?
Ja, eentje het najaar. Een nieuwe video wordt dan op hetzelfde moment uitgebracht. Misschien komt er volgend jaar nog een ep. Niets staat echter vast.

Als je op toer bent, ontmoet je je fans. Wat voor een gevoel geeft het dat er zo veel mensen je liedjes kennen en en dat ze zo veel mogelijk concerten bezoeken?
Dat is geweldig natuurlijk, maar ik ken dat gevoel al twintig jaar. En ik vind het nog steeds erg leuk. Het is fantastisch om alle fans over de hele wereld te ontmoeten.

Wat is de beste manier om je tussen zoveel shows te ontspannen? Heb je een geheim?
Seks is heel goed. Veel ondeugende seks. Het is leuk, ja. Veel ondeugend plezier.

Wat is je favoriete eten als je op toer gaat? Kies één van deze vijf: pizza, hamburgers, salade, koekjes of het uitproberen van lokale gerechten.
Lokaal eten. En lokaal bier. Ik probeer dat overal waar ik ben. Ok, ik was nog niet in Cambodja en ik ben zeker niet van plan om geroosterde vogelspinnen uit te proberen. Ze lijken walgelijk als je naar de documentaires kijkt!

Welk lied zou je gebruiken om Ost+Front te omschrijven aan iemand die de band niet kent en waarom?
Ik zou Denkelied kiezen. Het is een goede track die alles mooi omvat: zware gitaren, een geweldige melodie, vreemde teksten. Een beetje van alles.

Stel je voor dat er een elfje verschijnt. En kijk, je mag één wens voor de band doen!
Geef ons wat geld zodat we betere videoclips kunnen maken en wat meer promotie kunnen doen. Ost+Front zou veel groter zijn als er meer geld was.
