The term post punk contains many references. It may contain rude, directly or melodic music, or just punk, rock or wave. When I hear April Fools from Toulouse, I mostly notice melodic post punk with some wave influences. A very nice mix.

It is a remarkable thing that they play with two basses. This mini-album contains six songs. The title track that opens the CD is a powerful and melodic, and rightly chosen as the first single.

The same thing can be said about Killing Joy. Some songs remind me a bit of Franz Ferdinand or the early sound of Killing Joke, although it always remains quite melodic. The bass sometimes gives the songs real power, like in In My Way To Die and John Was Alone. The album ends with a rather slow and dark song: The Girl Who Fades Away, a track that let us relive the days of the good old Interpol.

An album that has been in my CD player for a while!

De term postpunk omvat veel verwijzingen. Hij kan ruw, direct of melodisch zijn, of gewoon punk, rock of wave bevatten. Bij April Fools uit Toulouse hoor ik vooral melodische postpunk met wat wave-invloeden. Een heel fijne mix.

Opmerkelijk aan hun line-up is dat ze naast een zanger en een drummer, ook met twee bassen werken. Deze mini-cd bevat zes nummers. Het titelnummer waarmee de cd begint is een krachtig en melodisch, en terecht als eerste single gekozen.

Dat kun je ook van Killing Joy zeggen. Sommige nummers doen een beetje aan Franz Ferdinand of het vroege geluid van Killing Joke denken, alhoewel het steeds melodisch blijft. Het gebruik van de bassen geeft soms een fijne sfeer aan de nummers zoals bijv. in My Way To Die en John Was Alone. Het album eindigt met een eerder trage en donkere song: The Girl Who Fades Away, waarmee je de dagen van de goede oude Interpol herbeleeft.

De zang past goed bij de muziek en tilt de nummers soms naar een hoger niveau. Een album dat al een tijdje in mijn cd-speler zit!
