Tranquility is a book for those who can tolerate pessimism.

The story is told by Andor Weer. He is a writer. He lives with his mother Rebeka. Rebeka was a celebrated theatre actress in Budapest, but hasn’t left her house for already fifteen years. Eszter is the girlfriend of Andor. Judit is Andor's twin sister. She was a violinist. Judit went abroad and committed suicide. Since that moment, Andor and Rebeka had a fictional correspondence, in the name of their sister or daughter. Andor wrote on behalf of Judit some postcards to Rebeka - his left-handed handwriting making it unrecognizable. Rebeka received envelopes which she keeps secretly and anxiously hidden for her son. Later it seems that the envelopes only contain blank sheets of paper.

Not only death is a theme in the book. The novel is also about insanity, abortion, incest, matricide, violence, hate and sex. The elements of the story are bizarre, often surreal: The apartment is furnished with Andor’s and Rebeka’s discarded props. Andor visits a whore who takes care of injured birds. The same woman poisons the pigeons in a square in the city. Rebeka symbolically buries her daughter Judit while stuffing her possessions in a coffin and bringing it to the cemetery. Sex is an explicit physical act without emotion. Yet here and there some feelings appear in this book. As at the time when a tumour is removed from Eszter and Andor is in the waiting room of the hospital being overwhelmed by the thought that he should free Eszter from the operating room, because her fear for doctors. As a reader you must be attentive to notice those occasional patches of touching emotions.

Tranquility is a book that does not end in a plot involving a solution to a problem or where the characters are freed from their fears. The story does not end with contemplative passages where interpersonal and other obsessive behaviours are placed in a context, where the reader could experience empathy, jealousy or indifference. The author, Attila Bartis gives no interpretation of this story. He does not make conclusions. No explanation is given for the confrontational circumstances in which the characters find themselves: the hell of hatred, the maniacal tyranny, and the lies.

Besides an oppressive family saga, the book is also a political novel about the last days of communism.

Tranquility is full of content, but without excessive symbolism and metaphors. The story captivates you. After reading the book, even days later, some passages suddenly dive into your memory. Not because of the shocking and obscene, but because of the dark beauty.

Rust is een boek voor diegenen die pessimisme kunnen verdragen.

Het verhaal wordt verteld door Andor Weér. Hij is schrijver. Hij leeft samen met zijn moeder Rebeka. Rebeka was een gevierd theateractrice in Boedapest maar komt al vijftien jaar het huis niet meer uit. Eszter is de vriendin van Andor. Judit is Andors tweelingzus. Zij was violiste. Judit vertrok naar het buitenland en pleegde zelfmoord. Andor en Rebeka voeren sindsdien, in naam van hun zus, respectievelijk dochter, een fictieve correspondentie. Andor schrijft namens Judit - linkshandig om zijn handschrift onherkenbaar te maken - kaarten aan Rebeka. Rebeka ontvangt brieven waarvan ze de inhoud angstvallig geheim houdt voor haar zoon. Later blijkt dat de enveloppen blanco vellen papier bevatten.
Niet alleen de dood is een thema in het boek. De roman gaat ook over: krankzinnigheid, abortus, incest, moedermoord, geweld, haat en seks. De elementen waarmee het verhaal worden opgebouwd zijn bizar, vaak surreëel: Het appartement van Andor en Rebeka is ingericht met afgedankte toneelrekwisieten. Andor bezoekt een hoer die gewonde vogels verzorgt. Diezelfde vrouw vergiftigt de duiven op een plein in de stad. Rebeka begraaft haar dochter symbolisch waarbij spullen van Judit in een doodkist naar het kerkhof worden gebracht. Seks is een expliciet fysieke daad, zonder emotie. En toch duiken hier en daar gevoelens op. Zoals op het moment dat bij Eszter een tumor wordt weggehaald en Andor in de wachtkamer van het ziekenhuis wordt overvallen door de gedachte dat hij Eszter uit de operatiekamer moet weghalen, omdat zij angst heeft voor artsen. Als lezer moet je aandachtig zijn om die flarden ontroerende emotie op te pikken.

Rust is een boek dat niet eindigt in een plot waarbij een oplossing wordt gevonden voor een probleem of, waarbij de personages worden bevrijd van hun angsten. Het verhaal wikkelt ook niet af in beschouwende passages waarbij intermenselijk, obsessief en ander gedrag worden geplaatst in een context waarbij de lezer empathie, afgunst of onverschilligheid zou kunnen ervaren. De auteur, Attila Bartis geeft geen duiding bij dit verhaal. Hij concludeert niet. Er wordt geen verklaring gegeven voor de confronterende omstandigheden waarin de personages zich bevinden: de hel van haat, de maniakale tirannie, de leugens.

Naast een beklemmende familiesaga is het boek ook een politieke roman over de laatste dagen van het communisme.

Rust barst van de inhoud, echter zonder overdaad aan symboliek en metaforen. Het verhaal beklijft. Na het lezen van het boek duiken in je geheugen, dagen later, nog passages op. Niet vanwege het choquerende of obscene, maar vanwege de donkere schoonheid.
