Some readers may sigh, because who is waiting for another tribute to Depeche Mode? But this is different, because you have not heard it before! The Danish musician John R. Mirland, who forms the synthpop band Am Tierpark along with Claus Larsen of Leather Strip, decomposed four Depeche Mode tracks via Bandcamp and did something completely different.

It is not easy to discover the original song structures of Something To Do, More Than A Party, New Dress and Get The Balance Right. John realizes that it might sound arrogant, but it was his intention to "rewrite" these tracks. He imagined how these songs would sound if they were composed by him. The result is not only stunning, it is also very dark. No cheerful synth pop, but obscure IDM that flirts with industrial. Perhaps somewhat too experimental for Depeche Mode fans who are narrow minded, but for those who love adventure...

Wellicht zal menig lezer zuchten, want geef toe: wie zit er alweer te wachten op een eerbetoon aan Depeche Mode? Maar dit is anders, want dit heb je nog niet eerder gehoord! De Deense muzikant John R. Mirland die samen met Claus Larsen van Leather Strip deel uitmaakt van de synthpopband Am Tierpark, heeft via Bandcamp vier Depeche Mode-tracks ontleed en daar iets helemaal anders van gemaakt.

Het is zelfs niet eens eenvoudig om de originele songstructuren van Something To Do, More Than A Party, New Dress en Get The Balance Right te ontdekken. John beseft dat het misschien wat arrogant klinkt, maar het was zijn bedoeling om deze tracks te “herschrijven”. Hij stelde zich de vraag hoe deze songs zouden klinken indien ze door hemzelf gecomponeerd waren. Het resultaat is niet alleen verbluffend, maar ook ontzettend donker. Van vrolijke synthpop is hier geen sprake meer, wel duistere IDM die met industrial flirt. Wellicht wat te experimenteel voor Depeche Mode-fans die niet verder kijken dan hun neus lang is, maar wie van avontuur houdt…
