The classic doom band Amber Asylum knows how to keep the balance between classical stringed instruments (violin, cello) and rock instruments (drums, electric bass). It describes the music as chamber doom, but because of the use of drums, that is actually impossible.

The music on Sin Eater is slow, dragging and though not happy, yet hopeful and melancholic. The woman's voice sounds better on record than live during the Prophecy Festival last year in Balve, but it still remains the weaker part of the band. Not that the vocals sound bad, but the competition from similar bands is just too high.

Another problem is that the selected instruments not always fit together. For instance, the drum, by definition a loud and noisy instrument, does not really match with violin and cello. Sometimes it gives the music an artificial sound. Despite this flaw, Sin Eater contains some obscure gems. It starts with Prelude, followed by the equally fantastic Perfect Calm. The transition to TOT should be mentioned as well, because although it starts quiet, the eruption (with the addition of electric guitar) is impressive in the last part of the song. The same elements are also used in Executioner. The music can be related to post-rock.

Actually, this is a record with two faces. There are fine, sometimes brilliant tracks included, in which you completely lose yourself, and then again there are some minor flaws that make you wonder if you should keep on listening or not.

Het klassieke doomgezelschap Amber Asylum weet evenwicht te brengen tussen klassieke snaarinstrumenten (viool, cello) en rockinstrumenten (drums, elektrische bas). Zelf omschrijven ze de muziek als huiskamerdoom (chamber doom), maar door het gebruik van de drums is dat eigenlijk onmogelijk.

De muziek op Sin Eater is traag, slepend en hoewel niet vrolijk, toch hoopvol. Er klinkt namelijk weemoed in door. De vrouwenstem klinkt op plaat beter dan live tijdens het Prophecy festival vorig jaar in Balve, maar het blijft toch het iets zwakkere onderdeel van de band. Niet dat de zang onaardig klinkt, maar de concurrentie van vergelijkbare bands is erg groot, vaak met klassiek geschoold personeel.

Ander probleem is dat de gekozen combinatie van muziekinstrumenten niet altijd perfect is. Zo brengt de drum per definitie een hard geluid voort en dat past niet altijd bij de rust van viool en cello. Soms moet de drumster (want de band bestaat helemaal uit vrouwen) erg inhouden spelen. Het geeft de muziek soms dat ‘net niet’ en wat gekunsteld aandoende geluid. Ondanks dat minpunt staan er op Sin Eater een aantal duistere pareltjes. Het begint al met Prelude, die uitermate mooi overgaat in het perfect kalm opgebouwde Perfect Calm. De overgang naar TOT moet ook vernoemd worden, want hoewel het rustig start, is de eruptie (met toevoeging van de elektrische gitaar) in het laatste deel van de track indrukwekkend. Datzelfde element worden gebruikt in Executioner, waardoor de muziek gerelateerd kan worden aan postrock.

Eigenlijk is het bij elke luisterbeurt hinken op twee gedachten. Er staan prima, soms zelfs briljante tracks op en de ene keer verlies jezelf helemaal in de muziek, de andere keer klinken de minpuntjes net teveel door om er helemaal van te kunnen genieten.
