At the end of 2015, Rustblade Records released Profondo Rosso (Deep Red) by Claudio Simonetti's Goblin. A special edition on red vinyl to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the film score of Dario Argento's giallo. Dario Argento is the Italian director, known for the horror trilogy about the three mothers (Inferno, Tenebrae and Mother Of Tears), and he is also the father of Asia Argento.

Initially, Dario Argento contacted jazz pianist Giorgio Gaslini to compose the film score. Argento, however, was dissatisfied with the result. When he failed to get Pink Floyd, he hoped for the Italian progressive rock band Goblin to do the job. In 1977, Goblin would compose the soundtrack of Suspiria, another classic by Argento. Especially the title track of Suspiria is memorable. The Canadian electro-industrial combo Numb reworked this track which can be found on the Orkus-compilation Electronic Lust Vol.2.

The 40th anniversery edition of Profondo Rosso contains four newly recorded versions of the soundtrack, and also three live tracks and two alternative versions. Especially the mysterious title song Profondo Rosso enchants. It is a mid-tempo song with quiet parts in which keyboard arpeggios create a sense of uneasiness, interspersed with prog rock elements of heavy drums and a sinister organ. Death Dies is more rhythmic and has a distinctive guitar solo. In the jazzy Mad Puppet the bass takes the lead. Deep Shadows and School At Night are songs composed by Gaslini, but performed by Goblin.

This soundtrack was released as a special edition on the occasion of the 30th anniversary in 2005. A version with 28 tracks. For people who have this edition, the new edition is of course completely unnecessary. The title music of Profondo Rosso is not as recognizable as Suspiria, let alone the one of The Exorcist or Halloween, but fans of prog rock and horror film scores can check this album.

Een speciale uitgave op rood vinyl ter ere van de 40ste verjaardag van de filmscore van Dario Argento’s giallo. Dario Argento, de Italiaanse regisseur die bekend is van de horrortrilogie over de 3 moeders (Inferno, Tenebrae and Mother Of Tears) en tevens de vader van Asia Argento.

Aanvankelijk had Dario Argento de jazzpianist Giorgio Gaslini gecontacteerd om de filmscore te componeren. Argento was echter ontevreden over het resultaat. Toen hij er niet in slaagde om Pink Floyd te strikken, richtte hij zijn pijlen op de Italiaanse progrockband Goblin. In 1977 zou Goblin ook de soundtrack van Suspiria, een andere klassieker van Argento, componeren. Vooral het titelnummer van Suspiria is memorabel. The 40th anniversery edition van Profondo Rosso bevat naast 4 nieuw opgenomen versies uit de soundtrack ook 3 livetracks en 2 alternatieve versies. Vooral de mysterieuze titelsong Profondo Rosso kan bekoren. Het is een midtempotrack met rustige fragmenten waarin keyboardarpeggios een onbehagen gevoel creëren, die worden afgewisseld met progrockelementen met stevige drums en een sinister orgel. Death Dies is ritmischer en bevat een opvallende gitaarsolo. In het jazzy Mad Puppet treedt de bas meer op de voorgrond. Deep Shadows en School At Night zijn tracks die gecomponeerd zijn door Gaslini, maar uitgevoerd door Goblin.

Deze soundtrack kreeg in 2005 al een speciale uitgave naar aanleiding van de 30ste verjaardag. Een versie met maar liefst 28 tracks. Voor mensen die deze uitgave bezitten, is de nieuwe editie uiteraard helemaal overbodig. Liefhebbers van progrock en horrorfilmscores kunnen dit album checken. De titelmuziek van Profondo Rosso is succulent al is ze het niet zo herkenbaar als die van Suspiria, laat staan van The Exorcist of Halloween.
