15th time seeing Project Pitchfork for me, last night in Waregem...

Opener Oberer Totpunkt wasn’t really our cup of tea, so we skipped it — though we were there early enough to catch some fragments in the foyer while having a few social chats. But honestly, not once did I feel the urge to go and have a look.

So, PP it was! They kicked off with a trio of bangers (Timekiller, Song of the Winds, and Conjure) — the first goosebumps already appeared. The sound was excellent and Spilles’ voice was in great shape, so things were off to a perfect start.

After that came a mix of (lesser) older tracks and some (unnecessary) new material. (Although “Blind Mice” is quite okay, those other two — “Memento Mori” and “The Name” — are rather weak.) Project Pitchfork’s recent albums have been pretty mediocre for a while now, and they can’t hold a candle to Dhyani, Entities, Lam-’bras, IO (not a single track from IO on the setlist!!! How the hell is that possible??), Daimonion, and so on. You could definitely feel that in the small dips throughout the set.

Luckily, those dips were compensated by songs like K.N.K.A., Souls, Carnival, Rain, Beholder, and The Island.
But once again, Spilles falls into the “I’m-gonna-let-my-girlfriend-sing-too” trap. What is it with singers always dragging their partners on stage and shoving a microphone into their hands? This is the third time Spilles has done it (the early PP days with Patricia, then Jinxy with Santa Hates You, and now this young lady!) — and none of the three could actually sing! With all due respect, but their voices just don’t blend, and pitch control clearly isn’t her strong suit either.

Anyway, fine, at least it was limited to two or three songs.

After 17 songs, the main set was over — time for the first encore (three songs). And in my opinion, those should be bangers! Don’t throw a new song in there; literally no one’s waiting for that.
Then came encore number two — supposed to be three songs as well, but it ended up being only two. I assume that was due to time constraints. And again, you’ve got to end with bangers. En Garde — fine — but finishing with Rescue? Come on… That’s a messy closer, especially when you skip the encore they should have played: God Wrote.

Still, all in all, it was a more than decent concert. I’ve seen them much worse (Dour 1997), but also way better (the IO tour in 1994 in the Steeple and ’t Syndroom, or De Casino in 2017). Though that might just be the old-timer in me talking. 🙂

Funny thing: during Rain, they played parts of the original video clip, but with the ex-Pitchies (Scheubi!!) filtered out. Weird… but I guess there’s a reason for everything.

On to the next one!!

15e fois que je vois Project Pitchfork, hier soir à Waregem...

Les premiers, Oberer Totpunkt, n’étaient clairement pas notre tasse de thé, donc on a zappé — même si on est arrivés assez tôt pour en entendre quelques bribes dans le foyer pendant qu’on papotait. Mais honnêtement, je n’ai pas eu une seule fois envie d’aller jeter un œil.

Bref, PP, donc ! Ils ont directement attaqué avec un trio de bombes (Timekiller, Song of the Winds et Conjure) — les premiers frissons sont arrivés tout de suite. Le son était excellent et la voix de Spilles en pleine forme, donc tout roulait parfaitement.

Ensuite, ce fut un mélange de vieux morceaux (moins bons) et de nouveaux titres (plutôt inutiles). (Même si “Blind Mice” est pas mal du tout, les deux autres — “Memento Mori” et “The Name” — sont assez faibles.) Les derniers albums de Project Pitchfork sont d’ailleurs assez moyens depuis un moment, et ils n’arrivent pas à la cheville de Dhyani, Entities, Lam-’bras, IO (aucun morceau de IO dans la setlist !!! Comment est-ce possible ??), Daimonion, etc. On a bien ressenti ces petites baisses d’intensité dans le concert.

Heureusement, ces creux ont été compensés par des titres comme K.N.K.A., Souls, Carnival, Rain, Beholder et The Island.
Mais une fois de plus, Spilles retombe dans le piège du “je-fais-chanter-ma-copine-sur-scène”. Sérieusement, qu’est-ce qu’ils ont tous à vouloir traîner leur moitié sur scène et lui mettre un micro dans les mains ? C’est déjà la troisième fois que Spilles fait le coup (les débuts de PP avec Patricia, puis Jinxy avec Santa Hates You, et maintenant cette demoiselle !) — et aucune des trois ne savait vraiment chanter ! Avec tout le respect, leurs voix n’allaient pas du tout ensemble, et la justesse non plus n’était pas franchement au rendez-vous.

Enfin bref, ça n’a duré que deux ou trois morceaux, donc ça passait encore.

Après 17 titres, le set principal s’est terminé — place au premier rappel (trois morceaux). Et pour moi, un rappel, ce sont forcément des tubes, hein ! Ne mets pas un nouveau morceau là-dedans, personne n’a envie d’entendre ça !
Puis est venu le deuxième rappel — en principe trois chansons aussi, mais cette fois seulement deux. Je suppose que c’était un problème de timing. Et là encore, il faut finir sur des bombes. En Garde — ok — mais conclure avec Rescue? Sérieusement ? Finir un super concert sur un morceau brouillon, surtout quand tu ne joues pas God Wrote ?

Enfin bon, dans l’ensemble, c’était un très bon concert. Je les ai déjà vus bien pires (Dour 1997), mais aussi beaucoupmeilleurs (la tournée IO en 1994 au Steeple et au Syndroom, ou De Casino en 2017). Bon, c’est peut-être le vieux briscard en moi qui parle. 🙂

Assez étrange d’ailleurs que pendant Rain, ils aient diffusé des extraits du clip original, mais en retirant les ex-membres (Scheubi !!). Bizarre, mais bon, il doit bien y avoir une raison.

15de keer Project Pitchfork voor mij, gisterenavond in Waregem.

Opener Oberer Totpunkt was niet meteen onze dada, dus overgeslagen — al waren we wel goed op tijd om hier en daar een flard mee te pikken in de foyer tijdens de sociale klapkes. Maar eerlijk: geen enkel moment had ik de behoefte om toch eens te gaan kijken.

Soit, PP dan maar! Meteen begonnen met een trio boenkers (Timekiller, Song of the Winds en Conjure) — de eerste kiekevellen kwamen al eens piepen. Het geluid stond wreed goed en Spilles was goed bij stem, dus voorlopig alles dik in orde.

Daarna volgde een afwisseling van (mindere) oudere nummers en wat (overbodig) nieuw materiaal. (Al is die “Blind Mice” wel een ok nummer, maar die twee andere — “Memento Mori” en “The Name” — zijn vrij pover.) De laatste albums van Project Pitchfork zijn trouwens al een tijdje redelijk middelmatig en kunnen in geen honderd jaar tippen aan Dhyani, Entities, Lam-’bras, IO (geen enkel nummer van IO op de setlist!!! Hoe the fuck is dat mogelijk??), Daimonion, enzovoort. En dat was te merken aan de kleine dipjes in de setlist.

Gelukkig werden die dipjes goedgemaakt door o.a. K.N.K.A., Souls, Carnival, Rain, Beholder en The Island.
Maar toch trapt Spilles weer in de “ik-ga-mijn-madame-toch-ook-laten-meezingen”-val. Wat is dat toch met zangers die hun lief altijd mee op dat podium willen sleuren en een microfoon in hun pollen duwen? Dat is al de derde keer dat Spilles dit doet (de early PP-days met Patricia, Jinxy bij Santa Hates You, en nu deze juffer!) — en geen enkele van de drie kon deftig zingen! Met alle respect, maar hun stemmen pasten compleet niet bij elkaar, en toonvastheid is blijkbaar ook geen gekend begrip bij de juffer in kwestie.

Maar soit, goed, het bleef gelukkig beperkt tot een nummer of twee à drie.

Na 17 nummers was het gedaan: tijd voor de eerste bisronde (drie nummers). En dat moeten in mijn beleving boenkerszijn, hé — steek daar geen nieuw nummer bij, want daar zit letterlijk niemand op te wachten!
Dan bisronde nummer twee: in principe ook drie nummers, maar het werden er maar twee. Ik ga ervan uit dat het met tijdsgebrek te maken had. En ook hier moet je afronden met boenkers. En Garde — goed — maar eindigen met Rescue? Komaan… Dat is een rommelnummer om af te sluiten, zeker als je “God Wrote” niet speelt.

Maar goed, al bij al dus een meer dan ok concert. Ik heb ze al veel slechter gezien (Dour 1997), maar ook al véél beter (de IO-tour in 1994 in de Steeple en ’t Syndroom, of De Casino in 2017). Al zal dat wel de oude toeker in mij zijn die nu aan het spreken is. 🙂

Wel bizar dat tijdens dat nummer de clip afgespeeld werd (enfin, stukjes ervan), waar de ex-Pitchies (Scheubi!!) gewoon uitgefilterd waren. Raar, maar het zal wel een reden gehad hebben, zekers?
