Few electronic music projects withstand the test of time, shifting life circumstances, and the inevitable highs and lows that come with them. Oliver Teßmer and Matthias Blechschmidt are a rare example of how artistic maturity can truly succeed.

Their journey began in the mid-nineties with the project Strange Facts, culminating in the album Confide. Around the turn of the millennium, they were reduced to a duo and reborn as Starsign. Their 2003 debut Transceiver stood out for its strong songwriting and a well-balanced blend of creativity and life experience. After a long period of silence, Starsign finally returned in 2024.

The comeback single Clear Horizon captures the confusion and revelations of an unbalanced relationship through vivid imagery and an immersive, refined pop sound. Follow-up singles Steal The Sun and Shiver led the band to Infacted Recordings, where N.Q.N.K. was released in September. The new album Silver Linings is set for release on February 27.

Musically, the duo operates within the thriving German synthpop scene. They fit comfortably among the many acts working within these boundaries. The core ingredients are solid beats, pop-oriented vocal lines, and a danceable feel—without leaning too heavily into the punch of futurepop. Silver Linings consists of ten tracks.

Standout moments are somewhat limited, as the album tends to flow along at a steady, rather even pace.

If I were to highlight a few tracks, the opener Steal The Sun would be one of them, thanks to its infectious melody and subtle futurepop aura. Without ever bursting at the seams, it still carries enough energy to keep you engaged.

A second highlight is Free The Soul. Its psychedelic undertone and the expansive guitar sound draped over the track give it a distinctive feel—a refreshing moment within an otherwise fairly straightforward and poppy record.

Clear Horizon evokes flashes of eurodance nostalgia—the kind of sound that filled dancefloors in my youth, when eurodance acts ruled the scene. Slightly edgier and sharper, largely thanks to its beats, it also stands out vocally. In that regard, the album is consistently strong.

A Little Closer initially seems promising, with somewhat distorted sounds at the beginning. But halfway through, the excitement collapses rather quickly. What could have been a standout track ultimately turns into more of the same.

For fans of poppy synthpop, this is a solid, “okay” album. If you prefer things on the smoother, more laid-back side—this one’s for you.

Weinig elektronische muziekprojecten doorstaan de tand des tijds, veranderende levensomstandigheden en de bijbehorende hoogte- en dieptepunten. Oliver Teßmer en Matthias Blechschmidt zijn een zeldzaam voorbeeld van hoe artistieke volwassenheid echt succesvol kan zijn.

Hun reis begon halverwege de jaren negentig met het project Strange Facts, dat culmineerde in het album Confide. Rond de eeuwwisseling, gereduceerd tot een duo en herboren als Starsign. Hun debuut Transceiver uit 2003 viel op door sterke songwriting en een gerichte mix van creativiteit en levenservaring. Na een lange stilte keerde Starsign in 2024 eindelijk terug.

De comeback-single Clear Horizon vangt de verwarring en inzichten van een onevenwichtige relatie door middel van levendige beelden en een meeslepende, verfijnde popsound. De daaropvolgende singles Steal The Sun en Shiverbrachten de band naar Infacted Recordings, waar N.Q.N.K. in september werd uitgebracht. Het nieuwe album Silver Linings verschijnt op 27 februari.

De heren bewegen muzikaal in de in Duitsland florerende synthpop. Ze passen in een rijtje van vele bands die zich binnen deze krijtlijnen bewegen. De kern bestaat uit stevige beats, poppy zanglijnen en dansbaarheid, zonder de stevigheid van veel futurepop. Silver Linings bestaat uit tien songs. Grote uitschieters zijn eerder beperkt; het blijft doorgaans wat kabbelen.

Als ik dan toch een paar songs naar de voorgrond mag brengen, dan is ééntje daarvan opener Steal The Sun, wegens het aanstekelijke melodietje en het futurepop-achtige aura van de song. Zonder uit zijn voegen te barsten, toch genoeg vibe om je bij de pinken te houden.

Een tweede is Free The Soul. De psychedelische ondertoon en uitgesponnen gitaarsound die als een deken over de song gedrapeerd ligt, geven een aparte feeling aan dit nummer. Een verfrissende song binnen het geheel, dat voor de rest vrij braaf en poppy klinkt.

Clear Horizon doet dan weer eurodance-gevoelens opflakkeren. De sound die ik als puber op vele fuiven hoorde bij bands die toen in het eurodance-genre de grote sier maakten. Wat hoekiger en snediger, grotendeels te danken aan de beats. Vocaal is dit ook echt wel een noemenswaardige song. Op dat vlak zit dit album héél goed.

A Little Closer leek er bij aanvang ook nog wel uit te springen, wegens wat “disturbed sounds” aan het begin van het nummer. Halfweg zakt de opwinding echter als een pudding in elkaar. Dit kon een knaller worden, maar blijkt uiteindelijk meer van hetzelfde…

Voor de liefhebbers van poppy synthpop een ‘ok’-album. Als het allemaal wat gezapiger mag: geniet!
