These American electro chameleons just released their sixth album Dark Star Disarray.  On this CD the band again explores the wide universe that is called electro. Every track has another atmosphere.

The album starts with the song Free? This song has with a slight touch of industrial, but evolves in a synth-pop mood. You just can’t link the band to one sound. A nice example is the track The Butterfly Machine that sounds more like darkwave. The calmer character of this song is no more than an illusion, just listen to the lyrics. The industrial elements are replaced by a nice guitar that works very well. The vocals on the album are partly done by Michael Smith and Mardi “Paisli” Salazar. This offers the band more possibilities in creating the right atmosphere for a particular song. The dreamy Kingdom Of Avarice is a nice example. In I Remember, Michael Smith is doing the vocals, while he keeps hanging on to the dreamy atmosphere.

The band shared the stage with a lot of electro bands such as VNV Nation, Switchblade Symphony and Hocico. No wonder that you can hear the influence of these bands without losing the Fiction 8 sound. Chasing The Dragon is a pure synth-pop song, well-made and catchy. On this album there are no steaming darkbeats or real dancefloor killers, but for those who love the soft (but still dark side) of electro, this varied album is a tip.

Deze Amerikaanse electro-kameleons hebben zopas hun zesde album uit dat de titel Dark Star Disarray kreeg. Op deze plaat wordt een heel groot stuk van het electrospectrum afgetast zodat elke track anders wordt ingekleurd. Het album opent met Free? Het nummer start met een lichte neiging naar industrial en gaat geleidelijk over naar synthpop. Dat ze niet in één hokje te stoppen zijn, bewijzen ze meteen met het meer darkwave getinte The Butterfly Machine. Het rustige karakter staat dan weer is schril contrast tot de inhoud van de tekst.

Het industrial geluid wordt hier vervangen door een mooie zwevende gitaarlijn. De vocals van Michael Smith worden afgewisseld met die van Mardi “Paisli” Salazar. Dat biedt de groep nog meer mogelijkheden in het bepalen van de sfeer van het album. Het lichte ietwat dromerige Kingdom Of Avarice is ook daar een mooi voorbeeld van. In het nummer I Remember neemt Michael Smith weer de vocalen voor zijn rekening, terwijl de dromerige sfeer behouden blijft.

De band heeft al met veel electrobands het podium gedeeld, zoals VNV Nation, Switchblade Symphony als Hocico. Daarvan is ook in elke song wel ergens een invloed te horen, zonder dat ze die kopiëren. Chasing The Dragon is dan weer een onvervalst synthpopnummer. Echte stomende darkbeats of dancefloor killers zijn op dit album niet te vinden, wel een mooie mix tussen dream- en darkwave.

Een mooie schijf voor wie houdt van de zachtere, maar daarom niet minder duistere kant van electro.
