Some postpunk, indie, coldwave bands to discover at WGT 2017 (Leipzig, D)

As part of the series 'acts NOT to be missed at WGT 2017' we focus on some gothrock acts that will conquer the 50 stages in Leipzig at the 26th edition of THE gothic treffen from June 2 until 5 this year. And we use 'gothrock' in a very broad sense here: postrock, postpunk, gothic rock.... Here we go!
Besides (Poland, postrock)
In the past years postrock has become a steady value in the variety of bands playing Wave und Gotik Treffen. This Polish 4-men band started in 2011, released 2 albums since and performed live over 150 times. One drummer, two guitarplayers and a bassplayer create melancholic, drawn out and psychedelic guitarsongs. For lovers of the genre, or for people who like to discover something else for a change and want to lean back and enjoy: go for it!

BFG (UK, Gothic Rock)
BFG, founded in 1985, can be seen as one of the prototype gothic rock bands. A crossover between Joy Division and the early Sisters Of Mercy, Coldwave in one song and more like rock in another. They supported New Order on tour in 1986, a year after their birth. They played several bigger shows amongst which was a show for 15,000 extatic German fans. They now return after many years. Rockin' all over the place!

Desperate Journalist (UK, Indie, Postpunk)
This London-based British band released their first album in 2015. And it hit the scene like a bomb! This year sees the release of their second CD. Their music is indepted to The Smiths and has a whiff of The Cure. Very powerful guitarpop with a dark edge. Ecstatic guitars that sound as Desperate as the band's name, with a cutting bass and female vocals.

Klez.e (Germany, Indie, Postpunk)
Berlin has its own Cure and they are called Kiez.e. Back to the early days of the good old The Cure to be specific. Blissfully draging songs, deep and dark, that will make many of the blacklings sway back and forth. It is all lovely oldschool. The concept-album Desintegration is a reflection on the dreams at the time of the German re-unification and the dark and broken world of today. The German lyrics take some getting used to, but the music amply compensates. So crimp your hair, apply your eyeliner and let yourself go!

Ritual Howls (USA, postpunk, Cold Wave)
American Ritual Howls is something inbetween more industrial sounding rock and filmic deathrock. The three Detroit men sound dark and gloomy and it is impossible to get any lower. After 2 albums they get to play WGT this year. They sound stifling, desperate, hypnotic and seem to draw inexhaustibly from this malefic nothingness. Curious??? Go check them out!

The Agnes Circle (UK, postpunk)
London post punk brings us this new duo. Sylistically their sound can be compared to bands like The Soft Moon, Kiss The Anus Of A Black Cat or Winter Severity Index. Wonderfully compelling.

Whispering Sons (Belgium, postpunk)
Belgian post-punk band Whispering Sons was founded in 2013. Their dark sound breathes despair and nervousness, expressed in an ominous atmosphere. Their first EP Endless Party was released in December 2015 on the Wool-E tapes and was re-released on vinyl in March 2016 by Minimal Maximal. On November 25th the band released a 2-track 7" on Weyrd Son Records. Their frontlady, with her voice-from-the-grave, has an overwhelming presence and is a sight to behold!

In de reeks ‘niet te missen op WGT 2017’ zoemen we even in op enkele gothrock-acts die de 50 podia in Leipzig zullen inpalmen, op de 26ste editie van hét gothic treffen tussen 2 en 5 juni aanstaande. We nemen de term gothrock in de brede betekenis: postrock, postpunk, gothic rock, … Here we go !

Postrock is de laatste jaren een vaste waarde geworden in de variëteit aan bands die Wave und Gotik Treffen te gast had. Deze Poolse 4-koppige band startte in 2011, bracht sindsdien 2 albums uit en speelde meer dan 150 concerten. Een drummer, twee gitaristen en een bassist zorgen voor melancholische, lang uitgesponnen, psychedelische gitaarsongs. Voor de liefhebbers van het genre, of voor wie eens iets anders wil ontdekken en rustig achteroverleunend wil genieten.. doén!

Opgestart in 1985, was BFG te zien als één van de prototype gothic rock bands. Een crossover tussen Joy Division en de early Sisters Of Mercy. Coldwave in de ene song, meer rockend in de andere. Deze Britse band met als uitvalsbasis Londen bracht in 2015 hun eersteling uit. En of die insloeg als een bom! Dit jaar komt de tweede CD. De muziek is schatplichtig aan The Smiths, met een vleugje The Cure. Heel krachtige gitaarpop met een donker randje. Uitzinnige gitaren die even Desperate klinken als de groepsnaam, met een snedige bas en vrouwelijke vocalen.

Klez.e (Duistland, Indie, Postpunk)
Berlijn heeft zijn eigen Cure, en ze heten Klez.e. Terug naar de begindagen van de goede oude The Cure dan wel te verstaan. Zalig slepende songs, diep en donker, die menige zwartjes vlotjes in wiegende bewegingen zal doen overgaan met hun oerdegelijke songs. Het klinkt zalig oldschool. Het conceptalbum Desintegration is een reflectie op de dromen van de tijd van de Duitse hereniging en de sombere, gebroken wereld van het heden. Het is wat wennen aan de Duitse teksten, maar de muziek maakt dat ruimschoots goed. Creperen dat haar, aanbrengen die oogschaduw en volledig los gaan…

Ritual Howls (USA, postpunk, Cold Wave)
Het Amerikaanse Ritual Howls houdt het midden tussen wat meer industrial klinkende rock en filmische deathrock. De drie mannen uit Detroit klinken donker en somber en nog dieper dan dit kan je moeilijk zinken. Na twee albums mogen ze hun opwachting maken op WGT. Ze klinken verstikkend, hopeloos, hypnotiserend en lijken onuitputtelijk te putten uit dit verderfelijke niets.. Benieuwd??? Ontdék ze!

Whispering Sons (Belgie, postpunk)
Whispering Sons is een Belgische post-punk band, opgericht in 2013. Hun donker geluid ademt wanhoop en nervositeit, wat zich vertaalt in een onheilspellende sfeer. Hun eerste EP Endless Party werd uitgebracht in december 2015 op de Wool-E Tapes en werd heruitgegeven op vinyl maart 2016 door Minimal Maximal. Op 25 november bracht de band een 2-track 7" op Weyrd Son Records. De frontvrouw met een grafstem en een présence om u tegen te zeggen, moet je gezien hebben.
