Next year Untoten (formerly Die Untoten) exists twenty years. It is almost impossible to summarize in a text who was involved in this Berlin goth band during two decades. Nevertheless, the core is the same: composer, lyricist and musician David A. Line and the German-Hungarian singer and painter Greta Ida Csatlós. The goth band emerged in the Berlin squatter environment, the first record of Die Untoten was even grindcore, but since the second album (Kiss Of Death), the band became one of the most popular German goth acts. The band achieved almost everything by itself, in pure DIY-style, like publishing own fanzines. Because of the erotic shows, Untoten is one of the bands people were talking about, but in 2003 David and Greta completely changed their style.

Durch den Kristallwald was the first concept album, with Grabsteinland as the central theme. From then on the style of Untoten developed in a chanson genre that is similar to the compositions of Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht. Grabsteinsland is a musical fairy tale about a street child who becomes a warrior. It was a bold leap, but in the end a clever one. Die Rückkehr is the fifth part of this enchanting tale.

The CD has 15 tracks and singer Greta Ida Csatlós sounds like a true diva, almost like Marlène Dietrich in a goth version. Despite the fact that these compositions have nothing to do with the style of Schwarze Messe, everything remains extremely dark. Sometimes the music sounds fabulous, and then eerily. All songs are sung in German and that’s perhaps not easy if you want to follow the story. Do not worry, Die Rückkehr is so beautiful that you’ll make the effort to understand it with pleasure. Volgend jaar bestaat Untoten (vroeger Die Untoten) twintig jaar. Het is bijna onbegonnen werk om in één tekst samen te vatten wie er bij deze Berlijnse gothband zat gedurende twee decennia. Toch is de kern steeds dezelfde gebleven: componist, tekstschrijver en muzikant David A. Line en de Duits-Hongaarse zangeres en schilderes Greta Ida Csatlós. De gothband ontstond in het Berlijnse krakersmilieu, de eerste plaat van Die Untoten was zelfs grindcore, maar sinds hun tweede cd (Kiss Of Death) is de band één van de populairste Duitse gothacts. De groep kan er ook prat op gaan dat hij alles zelf heeft bereikt, zelfs in pure DIY-stijl zoals bijv. door het uitgeven van fanzines. Wegens de erotische shows was het één van de bands waarover het meest werd gesproken, maar vanaf 2003 veranderden David en Greta compleet van stijl.

Durch den Kristallwald werd hun eerste conceptalbum, met Grabsteinland als centrale thema. Muzikaal betekende dit dat Untoten meer in de richting van het (tragische) chansongenre evolueerde dat wat op de composities van Kurt Weill en Bertolt Brecht lijkt. Grabsteinland is een muzikaal sprookje over een straatkind dat opklimt tot strijder. Het was een gewaagde sprong, maar uiteindelijk een goede commerciële zet. Die Rückkehr is het vijfde deel uit dit betoverende sprookje.

Het werkje telt 15 tracks en zangeres Greta Ida Csatlós ontpopt zich als een ware diva die bijna als Marlene Dietrich in een gothversie klinkt. Ondanks het feit dat deze composities niks meer te maken hebben met wat ze bijv. op Schwarze Messe deden, blijft alles toch gitzwart. Soms is de muziek wat fabelachtig, op andere momenten akelig. Alle nummers zijn in het Duits gezongen en dat maakt het er misschien niet gemakkelijker op als je het verhaal wil volgen. Geen nood, Die Rückkehr is zo bloedstollend mooi dat je met plezier de inspanning levert om het te begrijpen. Fantastisch!
