XPQ-21. Roots: Berlin.

Born from the EDM, techno and rave scene, with their first performance in 1998. Silence followed from 2006 onward. And now, 19 years after their last show, there’s a brand-new album. Jeyênne has navigated many electronic subgenres, yet remains loyal to a few core principles — even though his sound branches out widely: from raw EBM to drum’n’bass influences, EDM and fierce techno outbursts.

‘Overgod’ is a hefty piece of work containing 17 tracks. It quickly becomes clear that Jeyênne is deeply rooted in the wide spectrum of electronic music. From easily digestible darkwave like Dance The Devil, to the drum’n’bass-driven title track Overgod — with a distinctly pitch-black undertone — and Perfect, which shares the same backbone, all the way to atmospheric pieces such as First Rain on Mars and The Expoequivalent-Beta. The latter also features lyrics worth licking divine fingers for:

"I am the angel, I am the good fairy queen,
I am Jesus' favourite disciple — I never lie.
I am the good, I am the trustable nun,
Come and sit by my side, I am holy."

Industrial influences are not avoided either. The instrumental Toro shakes you to the core — something insanely danceable despite its frantic nature. Teamptation adds a splash of synthpop: tight rhythms paired with lively synths. Moduslki hits you with a heavy drone — deep, growling frequency waves rumbling in the dark.

One track that truly stands out for me is Crushed, Ugh. Electropunk that shakes you to the bone. Aggressive, screaming, built on classic ’90s-style synths, heavy beats and a bassline that keeps you locked into the rhythm.

And since we’re already tripping, a touch of new beat-style acid fits right in: Acid Trip Advisor. The name says it all. Dark beats, relentlessly pounding basses, aggressive and endlessly addictive. No, it’s not usually my favourite genre — but even this one gets me onto the dance floor. Though, a strong ale might help as a warm-up.

We had to wait 19 years. On Bandcamp, the master himself, Jeyênne, explains:

It sounds truly (and honestly) authentic. The more dance/techno-oriented tracks resonate with me less; the heavier ones, much more. What remains undeniable is that XPQ-21 still breathes electro. And after 19 years, this album firmly stands its ground.

XPQ-21. Roots: Berlijn.
Ontstaan in de EDM-, techno- en ravescène, met een eerste optreden in 1998. Daarna werd het stil sinds 2006. En nu, 19 jaar na hun laatste show, is er een gloednieuw album. Jeyênne heeft al vele elektro-waters doorzwommen, maar blijft trouw aan een aantal basisprincipes — ook al waaiert zijn sound breed uit: van rauwe EBM tot drum’n’bass-invloeden, EDM en stevige techno-uitbarstingen.

‘Overgod’ is een stevige brok van 17 nummers. Dat Jeyênne diep geworteld is in het brede spectrum van elektronische muziek, wordt al snel duidelijk. Van licht verteerbare darkwave zoals Dance The Devil, over de drum’n’bass-georiënteerde titeltrack Overgod — weliswaar met een pikzwart randje — en Perfect, dat dezelfde ruggengraat heeft, tot meer sfeervolle tracks als First Rain on Mars en The Expoequivalent-Beta. Die laatste bevat bovendien een tekst om goddelijke vingers bij af te likken:

Ook industriële invloeden worden niet gemeden. Het instrumentale Toro rammelt je stevig door elkaar — iets krankzinnig dansbaars ondanks zijn onvoorspelbaarheid. Teamptation serveert dan weer een scheut synthpop: een strakke ritmesectie met levendige synths. Met Moduslki krijg je een oplawaai van drone — diepdonker grommende hertzfrequenties.

Een nummer dat er voor mij écht uitspringt is Crushed, Ugh. Electropunk die je zonder pardon door elkaar schudt. Agressief, schreeuwerig, opgebouwd uit klassieke nineties-synths, stevige beats en een baslijn die je strak in het ritme houdt.

En aangezien we toch aan het trippen zijn, kan een vleugje newbeat-achtige acid er ook nog wel bij: Acid Trip Advisor. De naam dekt de lading voor de volle honderd procent. Donkere beats, repetitief pompende bassen, agressief en eindeloos verslavend. Nee, het is niet mijn favoriete genre, maar zelfs deze krijgt mij de dansvloer op — al helpt een stevig glas gerstenat van hoge gisting wel.

We hebben 19 jaar moeten wachten. Op Bandcamp verklaart de meester zelf, Jeyênne:

Het klinkt (h)eerlijk. De meer dance/techno-georiënteerde nummers raken mij minder, de stevigere tracks des te meer. Wat als een paal boven water staat: XPQ-21 ademt nog steeds electro. En na 19 jaar is dit een album dat stáát.
