Jimmy Sweeney’s vocal parts sound like a hot breeze under the Californian sun. Like a journey through the deep feelings of a lover, while his strings remind me of the sound of classical Spanish-guitar. Many years ago, a young Elvis Presley heard “Without You” – the ballad of a lover and romantic, Sweeney himself. For nearly 60 years nobody knew about Jimmy Sweeney and to this day he mostly remains “the guy who influenced Elvis once”. Sweeney’s new compilation is a good effort to present this artist to the world. Not unlike Robert Johnson and little bit more romantic than Elvis himself, Jimmy Sweeney is not always optimistic with his songwriting. The love in his poetry is not an idealistic destination we all want to reach and discover but something that makes you “break my heart in two” and then – pushes you to go on. Live and love.
