High Tiny Hairs is the latest project of the American guitarist Ben Bachman (ex Fuck Knights and former frontman of Nightingshales). The EP contains 6 songs and meanders between rock and dream-pop in which, according to the leaflet, the influences of the artist can be heard: Alex Chilton, Brian Eno and Syd Barrett. What you hear is a series of rock songs and ballades that are a cross between garage-pop from the sixties and punk rock from the 80s.

Chaos Ensues floats on a driving guitar riff over which Bachman spreads his high voice, a midtempo rock song with a catchy melody, bit bombastic, but so typically American and seductive, while First World Problems with its nice organ and repetitive chorus, is clearly the most accessible track: a rock song as we like to hear them. Ghost Shadow refers to the sixties (Free and congeners), with dark guitar playing, an appealing Farfisa organ and surf guitar-like sounds during the chorus: a not unkind pop rock song for whom it does not have to be so loud and hard.

Girl Like U is faster and certainly wouldn’t look out of place in the repertoire of a girl group like The Ronettes or The Shirelles. The High Tiny Hairs put bell-like guitars and emphatic drums under the melody, but the choir and flute interlude point very clearly to R & B from the fifties. A nice change. Nighttime Wander gets distorted guitars and sounds like a successful American rock ballad without much steer. Finally, Reddroom is certainly a lot more interesting and sounds like a heavy rock song from the seventies with distinctive guitar playing and a good sounding organ, rather English of cut than American, and is with World Problems definitely the best song on this EP.

Not essential, but fun.

High Tiny Hairs is het nieuwste project van de Amerikaanse gitarist Ben Bachman, eerder aan de slag bij Fuck Knights en frontman van Nightingshales. De EP bevat 6 composities en meandert tussen rock en dreampop, waarin volgens de bijsluiter de invloeden van de artiest hoorbaar zijn: Alex Chilton, Brian Eno en Syd Barrett. Wat u hoort is een serie rocksongs en –ballades die het midden houden tussen garagepop uit de jaren zestig en rockpunk uit de jaren 80.

Chaos Ensues drijft op een stuwende gitaarrif waarover Bachman z’n hoge stem drappeert, een goed in het gehoor liggende midtempo rocksong met een catchy melodie, beetje bombastisch en dus typisch Amerikaans, maar wel verleidelijk, terwijl First World Problems met z’n aanstekelijk orgeltje en repetitieve refrein duidelijk de meest toegankelijk track is, een rocksong zoals we ze graag horen. Ghost Shadow refereert eerder naar de jaren zestig, naar de tijd van de Free en soortgenoten, met donker gitaarspel, een aantrekkelijk Farfisa-orgel om het geheel bijeen te houden en surfgitaarachtige geluiden tijdens het refrein: een niet onaardige poprocksong voor wie het niet zo hard behoort te klinken.

Girl Like U is sneller en had beslist niet misstaan in het repertoire van een meidengroep zoals The Ronettes of The Shirelles, zij het dat High Tiny Hairs belachtige gitaren en een nadrukkelijke drumpartij onder de melodie schuift, maar het koortje en het fluitintermezzo verwijzen zeer duidelijk naar de r&b uit de jaren vijftig. Een leuke afwisseling. Nighttime Wander krijgt distorted gitaargeluid en klinkt als een goed lopende Amerikaanse rockballade zonder veel capsones. Afsluiter Reddroom is in elk geval een stuk interessanter en klinkt met z’n opvallende gitaarspel en goed klinkend orgeltje als een stevige rocksong uit de jaren zeventig, eerder Engels van snit dan Amerikaans, en is naast First World Problems beslist de beste song op deze EP.

Niet essentieel, wel leuk.
