On Saturday, November 5, the peaceful Poperinge shook to its foundations, not as a result of a war commemoration, but b ecause of the Dubhfestival: a guarantee for a mixture of wave-gothic and metal in all possible forms and combinations. The line up: Here Be Flames, Whispering Sons, Der Klinke, Near Earth Orbit, Doganov, Freak Angel and Merciful Nuns. As a result, the Dubhfestival always draws audience of all stripes. The following is a review of the various concerts, collected by reporters Jurgen Braeckevelt, Wim Gullemyn and Ruben Saey.

The Dutch duo Here Be Flames (Marcus Bodine on vocals and bass, Dani Rogosic on guitar) opened this festival. Playing early in the afternoon is not always a gift, but the duo filled the hall with solid epicrock and attracted the attention of the audience. The sound is determined by pre-set synths and drums. Not surprising when you know that Marcus has also composed music for games, which you can hear in the music that often takes you to a virtual world.Despite the fact that there are only two people on stage, a lot is happening. Singer Marcus drapes his clean vocals with confidence and a certain charisma over the electronic soundscapes, while master guitarist Dani complements in an excellent way with a very creative guitar sound and really brilliant solos. The set ranged from epic and dreamy to relentlessly hard. In 2014 Marcus played in Poperinge with his band Deadcell. To refresh the memory, Here Be Flames played its version of the Deadcell hit Unchained. Those who came on time for this first concert were rewarded with a very solid set of two very passionate musicians. The ice was broken, the festival was well started.

setlist : Forever - Queen of lies - I am a mountain - I cry - Unchained (Deadcell) - The heart way - Babalon - Waiting for the day - Dog of war - A thousand names.
(Ruben Saey)

Whispering Sons won Humo's Rock Rally 2016. Since then, they have played numerous gigs across the county, & abroad. On stage this young band is a through sensation, full of professionalism, bringing us some marvelous post-punk / coldwave. Singer Fenne has an enourmous intensity, not in the least by her special low & cold voice. Her performance varies from modest to almost demonic. Since they only released one album, the setlist was rather predictable, although they also treated us with two new songs from their upcoming 7” : Performance en Strange Identities. The uptempo track Midlife already made some people dance (despite the early hour) And their classic Wall was only played at the end of the set. A minor downside was the P.A., bass tones were often too harsh & hiding the beautiful melodies from the compositions of Wispering Sons.

Setlist : Shadows - Midlife - Never here - Performance - Skin - White noise - Strange identies - Wall - Insights.
(Ruben Saey)

Another Belgian Band, Der Klinke, really was in the mood, and so was the audience. Der Klinke already released 3 albums to create a very divers setlist. They started with Las Fabricas, that could move the audience, despite the problems with the P.A. system, which lasted 3 songs long. However, the audience was already dancing through this opener & also through the next song, Our Dance In Darkness. They also played some new material as a foretast for the upcoming album in 2017. My Frozen Heart is a quiet and dark track with some post-punk elements as well as a bit of darkwave. To my great delight, they also played Joy Division's She's Lost Control. And ofcourse, their classic, The Doll, was played as well as The Facts Of Life, Perfectly Dead and closing song Where It Ends. And let's hope that it doesn't end... With the excepts of the new album, we already know wit doesn’t end, and with a marvelous gig like today. You could see, hear & feel the band enjoying their selves during this marvelous gig !

Setlist: Las Fabricas, Our Dance In Darkness, My Frozen Heart, The Second Sun, She's Lost Control, The Doll, In Flames, Someone Who Smiles, Cold Water, Facts Of Life, Perfectly Dead, Liars, Where it Ends.
(Jürgen Braeckevelt)

The partnership between Artaud Seth (Merciful Nuns) and Ashley Davour (Whispers in the Shadow) is called NEO. The band brought a science fiction-like apocalypse alive at Dubhfest, a triptych with a story in which humanity receives an audio message from the future, showing the end of all life on earth as a result of an implosion of the sun. therefore the music sounded haunting and cinematic. The music was supported by a large background screen and three smaller screens and appropriate visuals. Because Artaud is a perfectionist, everything was worked out in detail: elegant sound, lighting and visuals. The show started in a strong way with Trans Neptunian Objects and Planet X. Songs from the past three albums were played: Them, Ignition Started, The Architects... What else can I tell you? A floating Ashley on guitar alongside a static Artaud on bass. Everything sounded very good and the only form of criticism is that a lot of music was on tape which reduce the live effect a lot. For the rest it was a fine performance and a nice transition between Der Klinke and Doganov.

The setlist: intro, Trans Neptunian Object, Abandoned World, The Architects, The Warning, Observing The Sun,Them, Jupiter Ignition, Kepler 1676, Earth Research, Ignition Started.
(Wim Guillemyn)

The Limburg trio Doganov opened the festival in 2014 and I remember being impressed. Apparently the organisation of Dubhfest was impressed too because the band got a better place in the line up. Late last year, Doganov released the debut album Conducting Chaos. With a mix of very danceable electro and metal, the result was a very energetic set. After a short soundcheck, the band started rather quietly with What's the Case With You, while the second song Mad pulled out all the stops. The public was whipped by cutting guitars, pounding beats and the convincing vocals of singer Carl. The pace was held and the public enjoyed the very hard dance party. Doganov sounded like a ruthless steamroller, whipped up by the enthusiasm of the public. The lall went completely crazy when the Front 242 cover Headhunter popped out of the speakers. Half way the set, singer Carl was given a moment of rest during the instrumental FIZ... then the band went full speed ahead again.. Carl repeated several times how he likes to play on Dubhfest. It is fantastic to see how the band has grown and has become a well-oiled machine. The set ended with Endear You from the EP Something Dark to Dance. And yes, this set was surely dark to dance to. Afterwards, I saw a lot of sweaty people, gasping for breath, disappearing into the bar or standing outside to cool off. Doganov deserved its place in the line up and the expectations of the new album were very well fullfilled.

Setlist : What’s the case with you - Made to the sane - Blood and rain - Phoenix - I am the dark - History - Headhunter (Front 242 cover) - The ghost pt. 2 - FIZ (instrumental) - Conducting chaos - Sun - A call upon the underworld - Eyes only - Lady Grimm - Endear you.
(Ruben Saey)

And then it was time for some electronic, industrial metal from Estland. Freakangel had the difficult task to perform after the marvelous gig of Doganov. Personally, I didn’t knew this band prior to the line-up of Dubhfest, so I prepared myself via the social media and I really liked what I heard.

Freakangel is a very energetic ensemble, and after the intro Used was played. While listening to the studio material, I really liked the combination of electronics and guitar, but live, I experiences it more as a hardcore band, rather than a industrial/electronic metal band. The audience must have felt the same since the reactions were very moderate. The Ones To Fall was more quiet, but the following song, A Dozen New Scars, the overwhelming sound of metal guitars was restored. In combination with the too loud P.A., this was really too much for me, and it was clear that the audience was not convinced. After Porcelain Doll, A Product Of Hate, The Book Of Violence and Parasite the band played one encore: My Darling Bullet.

Setlist: Intro, Used, The Ones To Fall, A Dozen New Scars, Insight, The Last White Dance, Porcelain Doll, A Product Of Hate, The Book Of Violence, Parasite, My Darling Bullet.
(Jürgen Braeckevelt)

The Merciful Nuns ended the festival. Unfortunately, part of the audience did not stay for this gothic rockers and that is a shame because the band did a good job. Patrick Bloos, dressed in a dark robe with cape like a high priest, initiated the show with a kind of exorcism ritual. Those who are unfamiliar with the ideas behind the act probably frowned the eyebrows or watched the act with increasing amazement. Then it was time for the men and women of The Merciful Nuns with a big sound and a well thought-out light show and visuals. Artaud seemed to be enjoying himself and was quite open to the public. Dystopia and Allseeing Eye (from the latest album Thelema VIII) were the start of an energetic setlist. A lot of tracks from the later albums Closing and The Exosphere were played. As a bonus we heard the sublime The Passing Bell and Thelema. There was no handclapping and no deafening sound because the music is too dark and too serious for such frivolities. The audience enjoyed it.

Setlist: Dystopia, Allseeing Eye, Karma Inn, Body of Light, Genesis Revealed, Exopshere, Black Body/ Ultraviolet, Supernovae, Occvltation, Speed of Light, The Maelstrom, Passing Bell, Thelema.

De setlist was deze : Forever - Queen of lies - I am a mountain - I cry - Unchained (Deadcell) - The heart way - Babalon - Waiting for the day - Dog of war - A thousand names.
(Ruben Saey)

Never here - Performance - Skin - White noise - Strange identies - Wall - Insights.
(Ruben Saey)

And let's hope that it doesn't end... It doesn't end.

Them, Ignition Started, The Architects…

De setlist: intro, Trans Neptunian Object, Abandoned World, The Architects, The Warning, Observing The Sun,Them, Jupiter Ignition, Kepler 1676, Earth Research, Ignition Started.
(Wim Guillemyn)

Setlist: Intro, Used, The Ones To Fall, A Dozen New Scars, Insight, The Last White Dance, Porcelain Doll, A Product Of Hate, The Book Of Violence, Parasite, My Darling Bullet.

Na een korte soundcheck startte de band vrij rustig met What’s the Case with You. Dit was wel degelijk something dark to dance to.

Setlist : What’s the case with you - Made to the sane - Blood and rain - Phoenix - I am the dark - History - Headhunter (Front 242-cover) - The ghost pt. 2 - FIZ (instrumental) - Conducting chaos - Sun - A call upon the underworld - Eyes only - Lady Grimm - Endear you.
(Ruben Saey)

The Merciful Nuns mochten het festival afsluiten.

Setlist: Dystopia, Allseeing Eye, Karma Inn, Body of Light, Genesis Revealed, Exopshere, Black Body/ Ultraviolet, Supernovae, Occvltation, Speed of Light, The Maelstrom, Passing Bell, Thelema.
