The interesting thing about reading reviews is the fact that one can discover unknown gems, right? Everyone knows that Boyhood  is magisterial and whatever will be written about the new Star Wars, you can be sure that the cinema theatres will be overcrowded. But have you ever heard of Grand Piano (or if you prefer the alternative title: Blackmail)? This thriller by Eugenio Mira is not a masterpiece (therefore the ending is just too disappointing), but ther filkm deserves definitely more.

Tom Selznick (Elijah Wood) is one of the best pianists in the world, but he lost a lot of respect by messing up a performance of La Cinquette (a piece written by his mentor). When he makes his comeback five years later ​​during a prestigious performance, he notices the warning on his notes sheet saying that if he plays one false note, his wife Emma (Kerry Bishé) will be killed.

Obviously you think of Alfred Hitchcock, but the visual effects remind you even more of Brian De Palma. The bright red decorations seem to come from Dressed To Kill and just like De Palma Mira loves split screens. The first hour is a beautiful modern thriller that makes a nod to the past, even if the magic is diluted through the paper-thin plot and a disappointing John Cusack as the baddie. Elijah Wood deserves only praise, because even though you rarely see him in big blockbusters today, he is like wine that gets only better with the years. Shame about the end, but if you can forgetthat than Blackmail is a very pleasant surprise.

Het leuke aan recensies lezen blijft toch het ontdekken van onbekende pareltjes, niet? Iedereen weet ondertussen dat Boyhood magistraal is en wat er ook mag worden geschreven over de nieuwe Star Wars, toch zullen de zalen ervoor blijven vollopen. Maar heb je bijv. ooit al gehoord van Grand Piano (of indien je de alternatieve titel verkiest: Blackmail)? Deze thriller van Eugenio Mira is geen meesterwerk (daarvoor is het slot net iets te ontgoochelend), maar toch een titel die meer verdient. Het scenario is zelfs geschreven door Damien Chazelle, die met Whiplash (ook al een :muziekfilm) een bom wierp in de cinema.

Tom Selznick (Elijah Wood) is één van de beste pianisten ter wereld, maar verloor heel wat aanzien toen hij een uitvoering van La Cinquette (een stuk geschreven door zijn leermeester) verknalde. Wanneer hij vijf jaar later zijn comeback maakt tijdens een prestigieus optreden, ziet hij op zijn notenblad de waarschuwing verschijnen dat hij niet één valse noot mag spelen. Doet hij dat wel, dan zal zijn vrouw Emma (Kerry Bishé die ook al in Argo te zien was) worden vermoord.

Uiteraard denk je aan Alfred Hitchcock, maar door de visuele trucs nog meer aan Brian De Palma. De felrode decors lijken uit Dressed To Kill te komen en net zoals De Palma speelt Mira graag met split-screens. Het eerste uur is dan ook een prachtig staaltje van een moderne thriller met een knipoog naar het verleden, ook al verwatert de magie door de flinterdunne plot en een ontgoochelende John Cusack als baddie. Over Elijah Wood niks dan lof, want ook al zie je hem vandaag nog maar zelden in grote blockbusters aan het werk, wordt hij net als wijn met de jaren alleen maar beter. Jammer van het einde, maar als je dat kan vergeten dan is Blackmail een zeer aangename verrassing.
