For a while Skeptical Minds's is a big name in the alternative goth metal scene. Last year they celebrated their tenth anniversary with a live CD that contains recordings from the Metal Female Voices Festival, and now there is the prestigious third album Omega-Thanatos, which is released with a comic book by Alain Poncelet who already made the artwork for the other releases. This was quite expensive and only could be realized through crowdfunding.

The band is multicultural (Poland, Italy, France and Greece) with a very international style that will please fans of traditional goth metal (Within Temptation or Nightwish).

The purpose of this release is that you listen to the CD while you’re reading the comic, even though both projects are equally worthy and Omega-Thanatos is not just the soundtrack of a comic. The music sounds like a (dark) fairy tale, and even though goth metal is the correct category, they used a lot of other influences (Deca-Dance is dark techno and Horror Show is indus metal) that you do not hear that often in this genre.

The eleven songs are excellent compositions that sound melodic (without making concessions), dominated by the angelic vocals of Karolina Pagan. Despite the different genres, Omega-Thanatos has a homogenous sound and is almost like a goth metal version of a classical Russian composition in which you hear various (musical) adventures. A top release that you need to explore.

Skeptical Minds is al een tijdje een grote naam in de alternatieve gothmetalwereld. Verleden jaar vierden ze hun tienjarige bestaan, wat met een live-cd met opnames uit het Metal Female Voices Festival werd bekroond, en nu is er het prestigieuze derde album Omega-Thanatos dat wordt uitgebracht met een comicbook van Alain Poncelet die eerder al voor de artwork van de band zorgde. Een tamelijk duur grapje dat dankzij crowdfunding kon worden gerealiseerd.

De band bestaat niet alleen uit leden met zeer uiteenlopende roots (Polen, Italië, Frankrijk en Griekenland), ook heeft hun geluid een internationaal allure dat de fans van traditionele gothmetal (Within Temptation, Nightwish) zonder twijfel zal aanspreken.

De bedoeling van deze release is dat je naar de cd luistert en tegelijkertijd het stripverhaal leest, ook al zijn beide projecten evenwaardig en is Omega-Thanatos niet louter de soundtrack van een stripverhaal. De muziek klinkt als een (bijna megadonker) sprookje en ook al blijft gothmetal de juiste categorie, worden er heel wat andere invloeden gebruikt (Deca-Dance is dark techno en Horror Show is indusmetal) die je niet vlug in dit genre hoort.

De elf nummers zijn knappe composities die melodieus klinken, zonder dat de band veel toegevingen doet, en die worden gedomineerd door de engelachtige zang van Karolina Pagan. Ondanks de verschillende genres is er nooit sprake van een stijlbreuk en klinkt Omega-Thanatos bijna als een gothmetalversie van één of andere klassieke Russische componist waar je van het ene (muzikale) avontuur in het andere terechtkomt. Een release die meer dan de moeite waard is.
