Mike Leigh, together with Ken Loach, is considered as one of the standard triggers of British social realism. In masterpieces such as Life Is Sweet or All Or Nothing Leigh became a master in showing images of poverty that we do not immediately associate with England. The now 70 -year-old filmmaker chose for his last film an entirely different subject : the biography of painter William Turner (1775-1851). The film is undoubtedly the most impressive picture (especially cinematographic) made by the Brit so far.

Mr. Turner is certainly not a traditional (and according to Leigh not an artificial) biograph. We know nothing about his past or childhood, as the film immediately begins during his heyday, when he was admired by art-loving Brits. William Turner (Timothy Spall) is a master with the brush, but in real life he is a boorish farmer who has no compassion for anyone. The only one who gets some affection is his elderly father (Paul Jesson), who is struggling with his back. The maid Hannah (Dorothy Atkinson) who is secretly in love with him, is only good to give him his cup of tea, or worse: sexual pleasure.

Everyone knows the world famous maritime paintings by Turner, but even if that is not the case, Mr. Turner is recommended. The film lasts two and a half hours and has no plot, yet there is no question of boredom. This is primarily due to the phenomenal performance of Timothy Spall, who previously collaborated on five occasions with Leigh, but nevertheless will be known by the general public as Peter Pettigrew of the Harry Potter-films. Timothy Spall is William Turner and even when the rest of the cast plays excellent, this biography is his one-man show for which he won the prize for best actor in Cannes. A second element that makes Mr. Turner an unforgettable journey is the cinematic genius of Leigh. The British director has picked the locations as if Turner tells his life in the environment of his own paintings. Mr. Turner may not be the coolest movie of the year, but it is one of the best.

Mike Leigh wordt samen met Ken Loach als de vaandeldrager van het Britse sociaal realisme beschouwd. In meesterwerken als Life Is Sweet of All Or Nothing ontpopte Leigh zich als een meester in het tonen van beelden van schrijnende armoede die we niet onmiddellijk met Engeland associëren. De ondertussen 70-jarige cineast koos voor zijn laatste film een volledig ander onderwerp: de biografie van schilder William Turner (1775-1851). De film is zonder meer de meest indrukwekkende prent (zeker op cinematografisch vlak) die de Brit tot dusver maakte.

Mr. Turner is zeker geen traditionele (en volgens Leigh ook geen artificiële) biografie. We komen niets te weten over zijn verleden of jeugd, want de film vangt onmiddellijk aan bij zijn hoogdagen toen kunstminnende Britten hem ophemelden. William Turner (Timothy Spall) is een grootmeester met zijn penseel, maar in het dagelijkse leven een lompe boer die met niets of niemand medelijden heeft. De enige die van hem wat affectie krijgt is zijn bejaarde vader (Paul Jesson) die sukkelt met zijn rug. De dienstmeid Hannah (Dorothy Atkinson) die heimelijk op hem verliefd is, is alleen maar goed om hem zijn kopje thee te bezorgen. Of indien de nood het hoogst is om als gebruiksvoorwerp voor Turners lusten te dienen.

Iedereen kent wel de maritieme schilderijen waarmee Turner wereldberoemd is geworden, maar zelfs indien dat niet het geval is blijft Mr. Turner een ongelofelijke aanrader. De film duurt wel twee en half uur en heeft geen plot, toch is er van verveling geen sprake. Dat komt in de eerste plaats door de fenomenale vertolking van Timothy Spall, die eerder al vijf keer met Leigh samenwerkte, maar desalniettemin bij het grote publiek voor eeuwig als Peter Pettigrew uit de Harry Potter-films bekend zal blijven. Timothy Spall is gewoon William Turner en ook al speelt de rest van de cast zo goed als feilloos, is deze biografie zijn onemanshow waarmee hij in Cannes de prijs als beste acteur won. Een tweede element dat van Mr. Turner een onvergetelijke filmreis maakt is het cinematografische vernuft van Leigh. De Britse regisseur heeft de locaties eruitgepikt alsof het lijkt alsof Turner zijn leven in het decor van zijn eigen schilderijen vertelt. Mr. Turner is misschien niet de hipste film van het jaar, wel één van de beste.
