The real fans know it of course, the French Gaumont offers on an almost monthly basis French classics in a restored version on Blu-ray. A small miracle for the fan of French films, because a few years back, these films were virtually impossible to find and now they are offered in a splendid edition. Meanwhile at my home there is a towering pile of this series, and the first one in my player (by pure coincidence) is Le Telephone Rose by Edouard Molinaro. This filmmaker, who has collaborated several times with Jacques Brel ( Mon Oncle Benjamin and L' Emmerdeur ), can be called one of the great masters of the French boulevard comedy, with as highlight (at least if money is the main factor ) the transvestite comedy Le Cage Aux Folles.

Le Telephone Rose from 1975 was a typical Molinaro movie that you hardly notice, but its charm can’t be effaced from the French film memory. After the immense success of Le Grand Blond Avec Une Chaussure Noire, filmmakers used every opportunity to focus their camera on Mireille Darc. In this movie the blonde plays the role of a luxury whore named Christine, who has to seduce the factory owner Castejac Benoît (Pierre Mondy). The poor sod does not realize that the beautiful Christine is in fact a whore. He believes that she is the niece of the man who wants to buy his company. Castejac is so in love that he does not even read the contract. After one night the truth comes out. But what now? How can the poor Benoït explain to his wife that he sold the factory to such worthless conditions? As if that is not enough, he wants to see Christine again.

Everything is typically French in this comedy. The screenplay was written by Francis Veber (the man of most Pierre Richard-films) and there is as usual a merry tune of composer Vladimir Cosma. The story is funny without being silly and even if the jokes are very predictable, thirty years later they still kind of work. Of course Le Téléphone Rose isn’t a masterpiece, but anyone who is keen on French comedies should definitely have this release in his collection!

De echte fans zullen het natuurlijk al weten, sinds een tijdje is het Franse filmhuis Gaumont bezig om op bijna maandelijkse basis Franse klassiekers uit hun immense archief in gerestaureerde versie op Blu-ray aan te bieden. Een klein mirakel voor de fan van Franse films, want een paar jaar terug waren de meeste van deze films zo goed als onvindbaar en nu liggen ze gewoon te glinsteren in een editie om u tegen te zeggen. Ondertussen ligt er bij mij al een torenhoge stapel van deze reeks, en de eerste die in de lader ligt is (puur toeva)l Le Télèphone Rose van Edouard Molinaro. Deze cineast die enkele keren met Jacques Brel heeft samengewerkt (Mon Oncle Benjamin en L'Emmerdeur) mag je zonder twijfel één van de grootmeesters van de Franse boulevardkomedies noemen, met als hoogtepunt (ten minste als je het in centen uitdrukt) de travestietkomedie Le Cage Aux Folles.

Le Télèphone Rose uit 1975 was een typische Molinaro-film. Een prent die nauwelijks opvalt, maar door haar charme niet weg te cijferen is uit het Franse filmgeheugen. Na het immense succes van Le Grand Blond Avec Une Chaussure Noire greep men alle kansen om de camera op de blote poep van Mireille Darc te richten. In deze film vertolkt de blondine de rol van luxehoer Christine, die de opdracht krijgt om fabriekseigenaar Benoît Castejac (Pierre Mondy) te verleiden. De industrieel beseft niet dat de mooie Christine in feite een meisje van plezier is. Men maakt hem wijs dat zij het nichtje van de kandidaat-overnemer is. Castejac is zo verliefd dat hij niet eens de contractvoorwaarden leest. Na één nacht komt natuurlijk de waarheid aan het licht. En wat nu? Hoe gaat de arme Benoït het aan zijn vrouw uitleggen dat hij de fabriek aan flutvoorwaarden heeft verkocht? Alsof dat nog niet genoeg is, wil hij opnieuw contact krijgen met Christine.

Alles is typisch Frans aan deze komedie. Het scenario werd geschreven door Francis Veber (de man van de meeste Pierre Richard-films) en er is zoals gewoonlijk een vrolijk deuntje van componist Vladimir Cosma van de partij. Het verhaal is grappig, zonder dat het onnozel wordt en ook al zijn de grapjes bijzonder voorspelbaar, werken ze dertig jaar later toch nog steeds. Een meesterwerk is Le Téléphone Rose natuurlijk niet, maar wie dol is op Franse komedies, moet deze release beslist in zijn collectie hebben!
