“Wasteland Manifesto” is the second FORMALIN album. FORMALIN is a trendy Berlin duo, adorned with all the right attributes. Obligatory gasmasks, piercings, latex/leather outfits, stylish lenses and tattoos, beautiful logo: all present! Thomas “Tominous” Liebchen, vocals, is also responsible for the astounding artwork. Gabor Poszt is the other half of the fashionable dynamic duo. FORMALIN is a beautifully packaged product, this much is certain. Even the YouTube movies look fantastic!

The music? Shall we …

The theatrical, majestic, neo-classical intro is promising …
The rest of the album?
“Wasteland Manifesto” offers sufficient quality and variation to remain “interesting”.
There is nothing wrong with the album but smashing, groundbreaking, innovative or original?
No, it absolutely isn’t. Not one of those things …
Why? A lack of flow, aggressiveness, uniformity? The way Liebchen sings? Your guess is as good as mine …
“Antiheld” makes one thing CRYSTAL CLEAR: FORMALIN sounds 10 times better in German!

The best songs on “Wasteland Manifesto” are “Collider” (cool intro), “Antiheld / Nihiled”, “Fight The Enemy” and “End Of All Suffering / Extended”.

“Wasteland Manifesto” offers various styles of music. Ferocious Electro / EBM, raw and uncut AND in German (e.g. “Antiheld / Nihiled”): I FUCKING like! Sadly enough there’s also some kind of inferior, boring “Electro-Metal” to be found here (e.g. “Tied And Blinded / Blackened”): I absolutely and utterly DISlike! Last but not least, FORMALIN shows us a more commercial, Electro / Synthpop oriented side: e.g. “End Of All Suffering / Extended”, a great song, reminiscent of “Theme For Great Cities” (Simple Minds). A “happy ending” after a mediocre experience …

FORMALIN? A band with loads of potential that should definitely make some important decisions!

“Wasteland Manifesto” is het tweede album van FORMALIN, een hip Berlijns duo, getooid met al de juiste attributen. De obligate gasmaskers, piercings, fijne latex/lederwaren, stijlvolle lenzen en tattoos, mooi logo: allemaal present! Het knappe artwork is van de hand van Thomas “Tominous” Liebchen, tevens zanger van FORMALIN. Gabor Poszt is de andere helft van het goed uitziende dynamische duo. FORMALIN is een kwaliteitsvol verpakt product, zoveel is duidelijk. Zelfs de YouTube filmpjes zien er fantastisch uit! 

De muziek dan maar …

De theatrale, majestueuze, neoklassieke intro doet alvast het beste verhopen , maar wat volgt? “Wasteland Manifesto” biedt voldoende (variatie) om boeiend te blijven … Er is niet “mis” mee maar een klepper is het zeker niet. Een gebrek aan flow? De manier van zingen die me niet helemaal ligt? Een gebrek aan agressiviteit, homogeniteit, originaliteit …? Ik kan niet duiden waar het precies aan ligt … “Antiheld” maakt alvast 1 ding duidelijk: FORMALIN klinkt 10 x beter in het Duits! Weg met dat Engels, BITTE!

De beste songs op “Wasteland Manifesto”? “Collider” (puike intro), “Antiheld / Nihiled”, “Fight The Enemy” en “End Of All Suffering / Extended”

FORMALIN is een groep met (minstens) 3 muzikale gezichten. Spijtig, want ik vind ze niet allemaal even aantrekkelijk. FORMALIN biedt rauwe EBM / Electro, puur en onversneden, in het Duits en met de gashendel vol open (“Antiheld / Nihiled”)! FORMALIN op zijn best zeg maar … Ze serveren spijtig genoeg ook wat ik gemakshalve maar flauwe, inferieure, inspiratieloze “Electro-Metal” ga noemen (“Tied And Blinded / Blackened”). Tot slot laten ze ook een commerciëler, Electro / Synthpop geluid op de wereld los: “End Of All Suffering / Extended” … een mooie song met een intro die doet denken aan “Theme For Great Cities” (Simple Minds), minder ballast, meer essentie. Een mooie afsluiter van een middelmatige release …

FORMALIN? Een groep met veel potentieel, progressiemarge … Een groep ook, die duidelijke keuzes moet maken!
