In August 2013, Ben Lukas spent some time in Barcelona, making audio recordings of the 9th biggest super computer in the world, Mare Nostrum. This computer is installed in a former chapel with acres of glass and steel. The cover of this CD tells us all about it. HECQ made music of the sounds he heard in the glass box and the result is truly amazing. Cold, atmospheric dark ambient sounds that fit the CD cover perfectly. The story behind this CD makes it all clear: four long tracks of calming sounds with a disturbing moody undertone. “Mare Nostrum” is a compelling soundscape in a digital world of wonders. Ben seems to record this album as a child in a toy store. It is apparent that the atmosphere of the chapel, and Mare Nostrum itself, inspired HECQ to great music.
