These times we’re so used to the image of George Clooney who’s trying to seduce us to the taste of Nespresso that we sometimes forget that Mr. Smiley is in the first place a good actor. You surely can find some inferior stuff in his filmography, but there are lots of good titles either. One of them is the excellent tragicomedy The Descendants from wunderkind Alexander Payne who waited 8 years before coming up with the following up from the much praised Sideways.

The story is set in Hawaii: the place at where everyone is supposed not to work and having no misery. That least doesn’t count for the rich attorney Matt (George Clooney). His beloved wife hit her head during water skiing and all diagnoses say that she is condemned to live like a plant to a machine. While the lawyer is arranging everything to say a final goodbye to his spouse, his rebellious teen daughter Alexandra (Shailene Woodley) informs him that he has no reason for mourning as his wife cheated on him.

 Allright, just on paper, it just looks like something you better avoid at all costs, but even if Payne is making some scenes too melodramatic, The Descendants is a genius comedy to cherish. The dialogues are just hilarious and remind us of what Jason Reitman is so good at: telling extraordinary stories about common people. Clooney surely wears the wrong shirts, but he acts in a sublime way. And yet, it is his loudmouth teenage daughter Alexandra who is stealing the show as Shailene Woodley proves (just like she recently did in Araki’s White Bird In A Blizzard) that she is one of the actresses to follow.

 The Descendants might use the cliché of the well-known tear and laughter, but it’s a rare thing that it’s so excellent wrapped up as in Payne’s film. A comedy that deserves to be categorized as a comedy!

We zijn tegenwoordig zo gewend geraakt aan het beeld van een George Clooney die ons probeert een Nespresso aan te smeren, dat we soms vergeten dat de grijze krullenbol in de eerste plaats een goede acteur is. Er zijn wel heel wat missers in zijn filmografie terug te vinden, maar ook een heleboel goede. Eentje daarvan is de briljante tragikomedie The Descendants van wonderkind Alexander Payne die er acht jaar over deed om na zijn alom bejubelde Sideways met een nieuwe productie op de proppen te komen.

Het verhaal speelt zich af op Hawaii, een plek waarvan de meeste mensen denken dat de inwoners er niet moeten werken en vooral geen zorgen hebben. Aan dat laatste heeft advocaat Matt (George Clooney) geen gebrek. Zijn vrouw heeft tijdens het waterskiën haar hoofd gestoten en is veroordeeld om tot haar laatste seconde aan een machine te liggen. Terwijl de jurist zich voorbereid om voorgoed afscheid te nemen van vrouwlief, vertelt zijn rebelse tienerdochter Alexandra (Shailene Woodley) hem dat hij geen reden heeft om te rouwen: ze bedroog hem.

Juist, het verhaal lijkt verdraaid goed op zo’n aftands Vijf TV-gedrocht dat je te allen tijde dient te vermijden, maar bij The Descendants is het vooral de verpakking die telt. Payne maakt zich wel schuldig door zijn film net iets te melodramatisch te maken, maar ondanks het onderwerp is deze film in de eerste plaats een hilarische komedie. De dialogen zijn bijzonder grappig en doen denken aan die waarin Jason Reitman zo goed is. Clooney draagt wel de foute hemden, maar hij is ronduit subliem. Het is evenwel de grofgebekte Shailene Woodley die de show steelt: de jonge Hollywoodster die onlangs in Araki’s White Bird In A Blizzard bewees dat ze één van de te volgen actrices is. The Descendants speelt misschien wel met het platgetreden cliché van de lach en de traan, zelden was het zo goed in beeld gebracht! Een komedie die het waard is om als komedie te worden gecategoriseerd!
