“Some dreams are lost forever. Some dreams, some dreams never die. Some dreams they go on forever. Some dreams they are just a lie.”
Although it was released last year, ‘Some Dreams’ still warrants a closer listen. Better late than never to give this remarkable return the appreciation it deserves.
Formed in Liverpool in 1980 by frontman Mike Score alongside his brother Ali, bassist Frank Maudsley, and guitarist Paul Reynolds, A Flock of Seagulls rapidly became pillars of the early ’80s New Romantic/New Wave scene. With their innovative blend of Synth-Pop and echo-laden guitars, the band made a striking impression. Their self-titled debut (1982) yielded MTV-worthy hits like I Ran (So Far Away)—a US Top 10—and Space Age Love Song, and charted impressively in the UK, Australia, Canada, and New Zealand.
While their chart-topping years may have been short-lived, A Flock of Seagulls’ influence has proven far more lasting. Their music has echoed across decades—covered by new artists, featured in pop culture, and rediscovered by generations who first met them on screen or soundtrack. In recent years, orchestral collaborations like Ascension (2018) and String Theory (2021) reintroduced their catalog in grand, cinematic style—highlighting just how enduring their melodies truly are. Those releases set the stage for something fans had long hoped for: a bold return with brand-new material nearly three decades in the making.
With ‘Some Dreams’, A Flock of Seagulls step back into the spotlight—not as a nostalgia act, but as artists with something vital and current to say. This ten-track album marks their first collection of original material in nearly three decades, and it doesn’t miss a beat.
Led by founding member Mike Score, the band’s unmistakable sound—lush synths, sweeping atmospheres, and melancholic hooks—remains firmly intact, yet feels renewed. The production is rich and detailed, balancing shimmering electronics with grounded emotional weight. There’s a sense of reflection running through the album, but also momentum, as if the band is not just revisiting their legacy, but expanding it.
Rather than trying to recreate the past, Some Dreams captures the essence of what made A Flock of Seagulls distinctive in the first place: mood-driven songwriting, melodic precision, and an ability to evoke both longing and uplift. It’s a comeback that feels unforced—mature, polished, and genuinely inspired.
A Flock of Seagulls has crafted a comeback that is both familiar and forward-looking. Long-time fans will find much to savour, and newcomers may well discover why those iconic early hits still resonate in 2025—and beyond.
