The severe crisis in Greece did not cause any problems in the music scène. At the contrary, Mechanimal is another fine example of Greek quality. The quartet retired to a forest for the recording and mixing of the album.

The lineup has changed for this third album (on Inner Ear label): female vocals by singer Eleni Tzavara, electric guitars by Tassos and Kostas Nikogiannis Matiatos and electronic input of Giannis Papaioannou.

The result is an album with 10 songs, including two instrumental ones. The music is an engaging blend of mechanical beats, shoegaze guitars with a dreamlike atmosphere that embraces Athens as if you see it from a distance. And as a bonus, Delta Pi Delta is dedicated to the Greek artist and painter Nicholas Liber (1956 - 2013) who was a friend of the band for a long time.

The songs are catchy and very diverse in style. Sunlight opens the album with a very quiet beat, dreamy synths and a thumping sound on the background. Eleni sultry whispers the lyrics in your ear. The shoegaze guitars are great and burst with a great bang. It is blissful synth wave, but it offers more than that. Repetition is built with the same elements. The guitars give the song a slightly sharper edge and are more melodic.

Thistlemilk starts with a solid rhythm section and guitars which recall the early days of U2. The voice of Eleni really carries you into a dreamy, mystic atmosphere.

Sawdust is pure synth wave with drone influences. The typical short sequence synth bleeps and heavily distorted guitars give this song a very special touch. Furthermore, there is a second instrumental song: Ferrum. A catchy beat, backed by subtle guitars, which explode as if Thurston Moore and Lee Ranaldo themselves hold the guitars.

Merry On Radio has more pace and is a feel-good song.

The same pace for the danceable Winter Mute. It is more electro and you even hear some EBM influences. The voice of Eleni is a bit tighter. Illuminations sometimes sounds poppy and the guitars give it (again) that alternative rock feel.

Search in the Wood opens like a solid rock song, and then becomes mystical with whispering vocals, followed by a solid garage rock sound.

Delta Pi Delta is a good record, solid and restrained at the same time. Greece, crisis or no crisis: thank you!

Als de zware crisis in Griekenland iets niet heeft veroorzaakt, dan is het gebrek aan goede muziek. Mechanimal is een Grieks viertal dat voor de opname en mixing van dit album de bossen introk.

Voor dit derde album op het label Inner Ear, was er een nieuwe line-up: vrouwelijke vocalen door zangeres Eleni Tzavara, elektrische gitaren door Tassos Nikogiannis en Kostas Matiatos, en de elektronische input van Giannis Papaioannou. Het resultaat is een album met 10 songs, waaronder twee instrumentale tracks. Ze brengen een boeiende mix van mechanische beats, shoegazegitaren die ons een gevoel moet geven van de dromerige sfeer die Athene omarmt als je het van buitenaf bekijkt. En als toemaatje is Delta Pi Delta opgedragen aan de Griekse kunstenaar en schilder Nicholas Liber (1956 - 2013), die lange tijd bevriend was met de band.

De songs zijn boeiend en heel divers qua stijl. Sunlight opent het album met een heel rustige beat, zweverige synths en een dreunend geluid op de achtergrond. Eleni fluistert de zwoele teksten in je oor. Geweldig zijn de shoegazegitaren die halverwege het nummer als een oerknal de song binnenstormen. Het blijft zalige synthwave, maar het is meer dan dat. Repetition is opgebouwd met dezelfde elementen. De gitaren geven de track een iets scherper kantje en zijn meer melodieus.

Een stevig ritmesectie en gitaartjes die nogal aan de begindagen van U2 herinneren brengen Thistlemilk op gang. Het stemgeluid van Eleni leidt je in dit nummer naar een dromerige, mystieke sfeer.

Sawdust is pure synthwave met drone-invloeden. De zo typerende korte sequentie-synthbliepjes en zwaar overstuurde gitaren geven dit lied een heel apart tintje. Voorts is er ook nog een tweede instrumentale song: Ferrum. Een aanstekelijke beat, ondersteund door subtiel gitaarwerk dat ontploft alsof Thurston Moore en Lee Ranaldo zelf de gitaren vasthielden.

Het vrolijke Radio On heeft wat meer tempo en is een feelgoodsong.

Het tempo wordt erin gehouden met het dansbare Winter Mute. Het gaat meer in de richting van elektro en je hoort zelfs wat EBM-invloeden. Ook de stem van Eleni wordt iets strakker. Illuminations klinkt dan weer poppy, al zijn het ook hier de gitaren die het geheel dat alternatieve rockgevoel geven.

Search in the Wood opent als een stevige rocksong en valt dan plots terug op een mystieke basis met fluisterende zang, om dan in een nanoseconde een stevige garagerocker te worden.

Delta Pi Delta is een goede plaat, stevig en tegelijkertijd ingehouden. Griekenland, crisis of niet: dank je wel!
