(((S))) is the solo project of Danish musician Nils Larssen. Last year we reviewed his album Welcome to the Heartland (2014), in the meantime he released the EP Carcrash with four compositions.

The songs on the EP sound quite a bit louder and heavier than the material on the dreamlike Welcome to the Heartland. Title track Carcrash is a rock ballad with whining guitars and firm percussion, over which (((S))) spreads his emphatic vocals, complemented with electro synths. Angry Candy gets good sounding electro beats which refer to Pet Shop Boys. The vocals are more in the background and less emphatic than in the previous composition. The aha-choir creates a nice background, the varied electro sound is firm and keeps the composition on collision course. Very nice.

Ballet of the Wolves starts with an lonely acoustic guitar, quiet and atmospheric. The warm voice suggests the presence of a singer-songwriter and that proves to be the case, because the song sounds as a quiet and melodic ballad. The highlight of this EP. Finally, Spectator convinces us with a very distinctive guitar sound, whistling and minimal electro and distorted vocals that are limited to one word: Spectator... An intense and at the same time clear and melodic track.

(((S))) is het eenmansproject van de Deense muzikant Nils Larssen. Eerder stelden we u z’n album Welcome tot the Heartland (2014) voor, ondertussen heeft hij de ep Carcrash gereleaset met vier composities.

De songs op Carcrash klinken een flink stuk luider en heftiger dan het materiaal uit het dromerige Welcome to the Heartland. Titelsong Carcrash mogen we gerust een rockballade noemen. De gitaren jengelen, de percussie gaat er stevig tegenaan en (((S))) legt er nadrukkelijke vocalen overheen, aangevuld met elektrosynths. Angry Candy krijgt goed klinkende elektrobeats die we in de buurt van Pet Shop Boys situeren, de vocalen klinken iets meer op de achtergrond en minder nadrukkelijk dan in de vorige compositie. Het aha-koortje zorgt voor een leuke achtergrond, het gevarieerd elektrogeluid tussendoor klinkt stevig en houdt de compositie op ramkoers. Heel mooi.

Ballet of the Wolves begint zo waar met een akoestische gitaar, rustig en atmosferisch. De warme stem suggereert de aanwezigheid van een singer-songwriter en dat blijkt ook het geval te zijn, want de song klinkt ook nadien als een rustige en melodische ballade. Het hoogtepunt van deze ep. Afsluiter Spectator kan ons ook overtuigen met een heel apart gitaargeluid, fluitend elektro en minimale en distorted vocalen die zich beperken tot één woord: Spectator… Een heftige en tegelijk overzichtelijke en melodische track.
