Sentimental, the Brussel's label in the hands of Whispering Sons' Fenne Kuppens and Kobe Lijnen, releases the first EP (limited to 50 copies) from the Berlin-based A.D. Mana. The band combines postpunk with a slice of shoegaze, coldwave and a touch of synthpop.

Take Hold immediately sets the tone with dark distilled coldwave. The bone dry drumming joins distorted guitar work along with a psychedelic voice. A song that is very retro but at the same time houses some more 'contemporary' sounds. And with Down The Wire we go earlier into postpunk, though even here electro elements get their place.

After that, time for a trip in the time machine, 30 years back. Honour has an eighties coldwave vibe, in which electronics demand a leading role. The typical synths from those years colour the song somewhat more synthpop. For the last of this 4-song EP, A.D. Mana treats us to a well-known epic piece of music, Soulware, for 6 minutes. It sounds ice cold and bleak. Sometimes, sparse guitar where only a few strings have the honour of being struck and pounding of drums trying to break the song open by repeated thumping. It remains a psychedelic trip, endless... but more than absorbing enough and flawless to conclusion.

The Berlin company delivers a solid EP. It contains a melting pot of styles, sounds icy cold and is good just as it is.

Sentimental, het Brusselse label in handen van Whispering Sons' Fenne Kuppens en Kobe Lijnen, brengt de eerste EP (op casette, beperkt tot 50 exemplaren) uit van het in Berlijn gewortelde A.D. Mana. De band combineert postpunk met een zweem shoegaze, coldwave en een vleugje sythpop.

Take Hold zet meteen de toon met donkere verkrampte coldwave. Het kurkdroge drumwerk krijgt overstuuurd gitaarwerk mee en een psychedelische stem. Een song die heel retro aandoet, maar tegelijkertijd ook wat meer 'hedendaagse' sounds herbergt. En met Down The Wire gaan we eerder dieper in de postpunk, hoewel ook hier elementen uit electro hun plaats krijgen.

Daarna tijd voor een trip in de teletijdmachine, 30 jaar terug. Honour heeft een eighties coldwave-toets, waarin electronica eeen hoofdrol opeist. De typerende synths uit die jaren kleuren de song ietwat meer synthpop. Als laatste van deze 4 songs tellende EP, trakteer A.D. Mana ons op een ruim 6 minuten durend episch muziekstuk Soulware. Ijzig koud en kil klinkt het. Ijlend, een zuinig gitaartje waarvan slechts een paar snaren de eer krijgen aangetikt te worden, dreunen van drums die proberen de song open te breken door herhaaldeliljk aan te kloppen. Het blijft een psychedleische trip, ellenlang... maar meer dan boeiend genoeg en gevarieerd om feilloos het einde te halen.

Het Berlijnse gezelschap levert een degelijke EP af. Hij bevat een smeltkroes van stijlen, klinkt ijzig koud, is goed zonder meer.
