“Fuck”: these are the last words you’ll hear Philip Seymour Hoffman say in his last movie (at least if you don’t count his support role for the soon to be released third Hunger Games-chapter). A sad moment for every film fan it is, because after two hours you’re facing (once again) the fact that Philip Seymour Hoffman is probably the best actor from the last two decades.

A Most Wanted Man is the third movie by Anton Corbijn. Everything’s clear now that the Dutch rock photographer has definitely sold his soul to film. Just like The American with George Clooney, Corbijn directed another spy thriller. And what else can be better than a spy story that’s penned down by John le Carré?

The story is set in Hamburg, ten years ago. Günther Bachmann (Philip Seymour Hoffman) is the head of the German security service. He gets a tip that a Chechen refugee Issa (Grigoriy Dobrygin) is coming to Germany to gather a gigantic heritage from his dad. Günther’s colleagues and the CIA (lead by Robin Wright) want to arrest him, but the German refuses. Issa is just a small fish and with using him as bait you can catch a bigger one!

How exciting the story and excellent the direction might be, you can’t deny the fact A Most Wanted has become a Philip Seymour Hoffman-film. One with a very dark side though, as the late actor who died from an overdose performs a character that is addicted on booze and fags. A man who can’t control his inner self, just like the real Philip Seymour Hoffman.

Apart from Hoffman, you’ll also notice an excellent Robin Wright who is since House Of Cards the ideal choice for playing an iron lady. No need to tell that Willem Dafoe is doing a great job as well.

Just like any other ingenious spy story, A Most Wanted Man demands some efforts to follow, but believe us: at the end you’ll only be pleased.

 “Fuck”: dat zijn de laatste woorden die we Philip Seymour Hoffman horen zeggen in zijn allerlaatste film (ten minste als je zijn bijrol in de derde Hunger Games daar niet bij meerekent). Balen is het zeker voor de filmfan, want na twee uur wordt hier nog maar eens onderstreept dat Philip Seymour Hoffman de beste acteur van de laatste twee decennia was.

A Most Wanted Man is de derde film van Anton Corbijn en het is overduidelijk dat het Nederlandse wonderkind de smaak van de pellicule voorgoed te pakken heeft. Net zoals in zijn laatste film The American met George Clooney is het wederom een spionagethriller geworden. En tja, wie kan er nou voor betere spionageverhaal zorgen dan meester John le Carré?

Het verhaal speelt zich tien jaar geleden in Hamburg af. Günther Bachmann (Philip Seymour Hoffman) staat aan het hoofd van de Duitse veiligheidsdienst. Hij krijgt een tip binnen dat een Tsjetjeense vluchteling (Grigoriy Dobrygin) aanspraak wil maken op een gigantische erfenis van zijn vader. Zijn collega’s en vooral ook de CIA (onder leiding van Robin Wright) willen hem onmiddellijk klissen, maar Gunther weigert. Issa is maar een kleine vis en met hem als lokaas kan je een veel grotere vangen!

Hoe spannend het verhaal en de regie ook is, toch is dit overduidelijk een Philip Seymour Hoffman-film geworden. Eentje met een zeer duistere kant weliswaar, want door zijn fatale overdosis vergeet je dat je naar een vertolker zit te kijken. Het personage is immers, net als de acteur zelf, hopeloos aan drank en sigaretten verslaafd…een getormenteerde man die nooit meer met zichzelf in het reine kan komen.

Ook de bijrollen zijn ijzersterk. Robin Wright is sinds House Of Cards de ideale keuze om een gehaaide dame te spelen en ook Willem Dafoe blijft geniaal. Net zoals iedere spionagethriller vraagt ook deze parel voldoende kijkaandacht, maar de voldoening achteraf is groots.
