Gay movies are a very frequent genre in the arthouse circuit, but if Hollywood is doing it, then automatically the public attention is bigger. Annette Bening almost finally had an Oscar with her performance in The Kids Are all Right. Sadly enough it was kept to a nomination only, but the role is surely one of the highlights of her brilliant career.

The subject itself isn’t very new as you surely have heard the story before. Due to the excellent performances and great dialogues, this movie scores much better than what you normally get in this genre, simply because you can describe The Kids Are all Right as a genius relation drama.

Nic (Annette Bening) and Jules (Julianne Moore) are two lesbians who are already married for years. It’s not that difficult to see that it is Nic who’s wearing the trousers, while Jules just let it all go. Their relation comes under pressure when their teenage kids Joni (Mia Wasikowska) and Laser (Josh Hutcherson) want to meet their biological father. The sperm donor seems to be a certain Paul (Mark Ruffalo): a very nice guy who has an answer to everything. After a short while Jules falls in love with Paul.

A mellow film, you think? Not really, because The Kids Are All Right by Lisa Cholodenko (from whom we heard nothing afterwards) flirts with American indie cinema and the much feared Hollywoodian feelgood movie. Of course Cholodenko has the strength that she can rely on genius actors. It’s always delicious to see Annette Bening performing and believe us, you never have heard her said words like “I don’t need your perception just like I don’t need a dick in my ass!”. Julianne Moore is again great, the young Wasikowska sublime and also Mark Ruffalo is doing a great job. A tip? Yes!

In het arthousecircuit zijn holebi-films schering en inslag, maar als Hollywood er zich mee bemoeit dan schiet natuurlijk de hele wereld wakker. The Kids Are all Right leverde Annette Bening net geen Oscar op. Alhoewel deze briljante actrice zo’n beeldje dubbel en dik verdient is het toch opmerkelijk dat het grote publiek alleen maar zo’n onderwerp wil als het door tinseltown wordt aangeboden.

Nu goed, tot zo ver de kritiek, want deze relatiefilm uit 2010 is er echt een om de vingers bij af te likken. Het onderwerp zelf is al verschillende keren de revue gepasseerd, maar dankzij de sublieme vertolkingen en de spitse dialogen overschrijdt deze film de middelmaat die typerend is voor dit genre.

Nic (Annette Bening) en Jules (Julianne Moore) zijn een lesbokoppel. Hun leventje gaat al jarenlang zijn gang. Nic is duidelijk degene die de broek draagt, terwijl Jules alles rustig over zich heen laat komen. Hun relatie wordt ernstig verstoord wanneer hun tienerkinderen Joni (Mia Wasikowska) en Laser (Josh Hutcherson) hun biologische vader willen leren kennen. De spermadonor blijkt Paul (Mark Ruffalo) te zijn: een vlotte kerel die op alles een antwoord heeft. Na een tijdje wordt Jules verliefd op Paul.

Een melige film, denk je? Neen, net niet! The Kids Are All Right van Lisa Cholodenko (vreemd genoeg werd het stil rond haar na deze hit) flirt heerlijk met Amerikaanse indiecinema en de gevreesde feelgoodmovie uit Hollywood. Uiteraard kon Cholodenko wel rekenen op ijzersterke acteurs. Annette Bening is altijd heerlijk om naar te kijken, Moore wederom betoverend, de jonge Wasikowska subliem als altijd en ook Mark Ruffalo zet een zeer verdienstelijke vertolking neer.
