Mannequin is a Californian Dark-Wave duo that have just released their first full album 'From a Distance' on the Sentimental label, run by (among others) Fenne Kuppens of Belgian band Whispering Sons. Mannequin previously released their EP 'Nocere' (2019) and today they present us their 8-song debut album.

Their sound throws us back to the eighties and tends to sound like bands such as Das Kabinette and Iron Curtain. Strong bass lines, melodic synths and dark vocals. 'Modern Light' opens the album quietly and spherically. The bass line is blissful in its simplicity, the vocals deep but rocking. Slightly stronger in terms of tempo and with great drums, the track 'Cities' takes over. Here too, simplicity is the force. 'From A Distance' brings back a bit of peace. The song is almost sweet and soft in nature.

'Radio' is again powerful but short, with angular rhythms, a wonderful bass line and a few very nice rhythm changes.

There is also room for some instrumental work; 'Self Portrait'. A gem that is bathed in old synths for a minute and a half, only to return to the tasty Cold-Wave with 'Can We Go'. 40 years back in time to the good old eighties, with a great danceable feeling. 'Late Night' consists of the same genetic material in terms of sound and feeling, albeit a bit firmer but still very danceable. Whatever the feeling about this debut, despite the fairly calm songs it remains a very danceable album.

With 'From A Distance' Mannequin delivers a very nice fully-fledged debut long player. Although it is not the most innovative sound, the songs still invite you to listen. Maybe the album could have been an little more varied, but that is a just very personal opinion.

Mannequin is een Californisch darkwave duo, dat hun eerste full album From a Distance uitbrengt op het Sentimental label dat wordt gerund door o.a. Fenne Kuppens van het Belgische Whispering Sons. Mannequin bracht eerder de EP Nocere uit (2019) en serveert ons heden een 8 songs tellend debuut.

Hun sound brengt ons terug naar de eighties en neigt naar bands zoals Das Kabinette en Iron Curtain. Stevige baslijnen, melodieuze synths en donkere vocalen. Modern Light opent rustig en sferisch. De baslijn is zaligmakend in eenvoud, de vocalen diep maar meewiegend. Iets steviger qua tempo en met zalige drums hakt Cities er op in. Ook hier is de eenvoud een kracht. From A Distance gaat weer terug wat rustiger voortkabbelen. De song is heel lieflijk en zacht van aard.
Radio is een kort maar krachtg nummer met hoekige ritmes, een zalige baslijn en met een paar heel leuke ritmewisselingen.
Er is ook ruimte voor instrumentaal werk: Self Portrait. Een in oude synths badend kleinood van anderhalve minuut lang. Vervolgens een terugkeer naar lekkere coldwave met Can We Go. 40 jaar terug in de tijd naar de good old eighties, met een geweldig dansbaar gevoel. Late Night bestaat uit hetzelfde genetische materiaal qua sound en gevoel, zij het dan iets steviger en zeker dansbaar. Wat ook het gevoel is over dit debuut: ondanks de vrij rustge songs blijft het dansbaar.

Mannequin levert een aardig eerste volwaardige longplayer af. Hoewel het niet de meest vernieuwende sound is, nodigen de songs toch uit om beluisterd te worden. het mocht iets gevarieerder, maar dat is dan een heel persoonlijke insteek.
