The German band Mystigma certainly is no newcomer to the genre, because it is around for 23 years, although in the past, it was a known als Tears Of Mystigma. The guys started as a death metal band, but since ten years they follow the path of goth rock, although you still hear a lot of metal and rock influences. Mystigma particularly has success in the German underground scene, and recently played in Europe as support of Diary Of Dreams. The band from Osnabrück was signed to Echozone for a while, but latest CD Schattenboten is a new start. The CD is a solid and will especially please fans of Neue Deutsche Härte, who also like a strong dose of rock.

In times when people have little patience, it is advisable to start with the best you have. Opener Weltenbrand is indeed one of the strongest track on the album, although Zu Staub is at least as good. The text does not make you happy, yet you are singing along with this fantastic goth rock song. The German band claims that it always avoids categories and does do what it wants to do. Sometimes dark, but also pure rock like in Meinem Schatten. If you hate German rock, you won’t like this, while others... well, you know!

In both Diva Harmagedon and Für diesen Augenblick you hear that the band has a metal past, although it never gets too hard. There is also a ballad included (Niemand Ausser Uns), but the highlight on the album is undoubtedly Gottlos, which is a superb goth anthem.

Mystigma offers you nothing new, and surely no trends. Schattenboten is the work of a band that knows how to write rock songs with German goth rock- and metal influences. Mystigma plays on safe, that's for sure, but the fans of the genre will appreciate that.

De Duitse band Mystigma is zeker geen nieuwkomer in het genre, want hij draait al 23 jaar mee, ofschoon vroeger onder de naam Tears Of Mystigma. Het gezelschap begon als een deathmetalband, maar sinds een jaar of tien maakt het gothrock, ofschoon je er ook nog heel wat metal- en rockinvloeden in hoort. Mystigma heeft vooral succes in de Duitse undergroundscène, en onlangs speelde de band in Europa als voorprogramma van Diary Of Dreams. De band uit Osnabrück zat een tijdje op het Echozone-label, maar de nieuwste cd Schattenboten is een nieuwe start. De cd is degelijk en vooral de fans van Neue Deutsche Härte, die niet vies zijn van een stevige portie rock, zullen er blij mee zijn.

In tijden dat mensen maar weinig geduld hebben, is het aan te raden om maar meteen met het beste uit te pakken. Opener Weltenbrand is zonder meer één van de sterkste tracks op deze plaat, hoewel Zu Staub minstens even sterk is. De tekst maakt je wel niet vrolijk, toch sta je heerlijk mee te zingen op deze fantastische gothrocksong. De Duitse band heeft naar eigen zeggen altijd lak gehad aan denken in hokjes en doet gewoon waar hij zin in heeft. Het klinkt donker, maar het mag ook gewoon als rock klinken, zoals In Meinem Schatten. Wie een hekel heeft aan Duitstalige rock zal er geen bal aan vinden, en de anderen...nou ja, die weten het wel!

In Diva Harmagedon en Für diesen Augenblick hoor je duidelijk dat de band een metalverleden heeft, alhoewel het nooit echt hard wordt. Er zit ook een ballade tussen (Niemand Ausser Uns), maar het hoogtepunt op deze cd is zonder twijfel het zeer knappe Gottlos.

Vernieuwing moet je bij Mystigma niet zoeken, en zeker geen trends. Schattenboten is dan ook het werk van een band die op z'n best is met Duitse rocksongs met gothrock- en metalinvloeden. Er wordt op zeer veilig gespeeld, zoveel is zeker, maar de liefhebbers van het genre zullen net dat aspect appreciëren.
