After his rehab, Raymond Watts seems to be back on the right and productive track, since several years now, with his legendary Industrial-Rock project PIG. Although, we have honestly to admit that we didn’t appreciate everything he recently released under this moniker as good, but hey … Everyone makes mistakes and luckily tastes and preferences differ from person to person. What is immediately noticeable from the beginning of listening to this album, is the sometimes almost bombastic, yet great production that lays hidden behind every song. This Pain Is God seems to fall down as a gift from heaven, especially for the (late) fans of faltering supreme god Marilyn Manson, who these days must feel seriously shitted upon off by their (former) hero. But let's not get lost and go there… PIG aka Raymonds Watts has been active since the eighties and seems to have become a bit less eclectic over the years, which only benefits to the cohesion of this album. His experimental and industrial escapades from the early PIG years are clearly less present on his latest works, as well as on this album. On the other hand, his contradictory love for Rock n Roll seems to get stronger and stronger, as one can tell from the song ‘Rock n Roll Refugee’. But fear not, besides the almost Rammstein-esque guitar riffs, all songs on this album still have a solid industrial-electronic basis underneath. Pounding beats, present synthesizers and rousing arpeggio sequencers are always around. For example, ‘Mobocracy (Militant Mix)’ is a killer track on this record. Personally, I also like more Raymond's deep dark voice opposite to the forced screeching of the aforementioned male chauvinist pig with initials MM. Anyway, just listen to the blissfully dragging but pumping songs such as ‘The Wages of Sin’ or ‘Seed of Evil (PIG Mix)’. A bit further on, ‘Kickin Ass’ takes it a bit easier. And it's not just the title that reminds us of the vintage KMFDM times. As the penultimate song we get ‘Sex_Death (Evil Edit)’, a potential party track, although it takes more than two minutes before it really gets going. The very last, and fourteenth (14!) track, is called, appropriately or not, “Suffer No More". Luckily, in our case, listening to Pain is God was undeniably more joy than suffering!

Raymond Watts is na zijn rehab sinds enkele jaren weer duidelijk op het goede en productieve pad met zijn ondertussen legendarische Industrial rockformatie PIG. Niet alles wat hij recent onder deze naam heeft gereleased getuigt van goed smaak, dat moeten we eerlijk toegeven, maar kom, iedereen maakt fouten en gelukkig verschillen smaken en voorkeuren van persoon tot persoon. Wat bij het luisteren naar dit album meteen opvalt, is de soms haast bombastische, maar toch geweldige productie van elk nummer. Deze Pain Is God komt als een geschenk uit de hemel gevallen voor de (wijlen) fans van wankelde oppergod Marilyn Manson die zich dezer dagen serieus te kakken voelen gezet door hun (voormalige) held. Maar laten we niet afdwalen … PIG aka Raymonds is al sinds de jaren 80 actief maar lijkt door de jaren heen wel iets minder eclectisch geworden, wat de samenhang binnen dit album alleen maar ten goede komt. De experimentele en industriële avonturen van PIG in de beginjaren, komen duidelijk wat minder naar boven op zijn laatste werk, zo ook op dit album. Tegelijk lijkt zijn wat tegenstrijdige voorliefde voor rock-'n-rol steeds sterker te worden, zo getuigt ook onder meer het nummer Rock n Roll Refugee. Maar vrees niet, naast de haast Rammstein-achtige guitar riffs, hebben alle songs op dit album nog steeds een stevige industrieel-elektronische basis. Beukende beats, snijden synthesizers en opzwepende arpeggio sequencers alom. Mobocracy (Militant Mix) bijvoorbeeld is een beuker van formaat op deze plaat. Persoonlijk houd ik ook veel meer van Raymonds diepe donkere stemgeluid dan van het geforceerde gekrijs van die eerder vermelde ‘male chauvinist pig’ hierboven met initialen MM. Luister maar eens naar de zalig slepende maar pompende nummers zoals The Wages of Sin of Seed of Evil (PIG Mix). Wat verder doet Kickin Ass het dan weer wat rustiger aan. En het is niet enkel de titel die ons doet denken aan vintage KMFDM tijden. Als voorlaatste nummer krijgen we Sex_Death (Evil Edit) voorgeschoteld, een potentieel fuifnummer, al heeft het dik twee minuten nodig om echt op dreef te komen. Het allerlaatste, en veertiende (!) nummer, op dit album, heet al dan niet heel toepasselijk Suffer No More. In ons geval was het gelukkig en ontegensprekelijk meer genieten dan afzien tijdens het beluisteren van deze Pain is God.
