Mardi Gras, which literally means "Fat Tuesday", is the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday (also called ‘Shrove Tuesday’) and is directly linked to carnival. In America, Mardi Gras in New Orleans is big deal. The week before, the city almost doubles in numbers because of the festivities, with a flamboyant and colorful parade as highlight. The melting pot of New Orleans, with many Hispanics, Latinos, but also residents of African and Asian origin, creates an exotic cocktail which can also have a dark side.

I reviewed the previous release of Anthony Jones (‘Aestuarium’, a duo album with Monica Richards) around Halloween last year. This time, Shrove Tuesday and carnival is the period of special significance for the American singer. The title comes from the literal Latin translation of "Carne-vale" which refers to the practice of not eating meat during Lent. With ‘Farewell to Flesh’ Jones wrote a personal homage to his time in New Orleans. That was before hurricane Katrina hit hard at the end of August 2005.

After 4 years this is his fifth solo album. With every release Jones places a specific musical focus. On ‘Viktorian’ that was the use of Chinese instruments, and for ‘Guardian of the Wolf’ he looked at Eastern European music traditions. On ‘Suspiriorum’ he used horror soundscapes and with ‘If The Moon Could Sing’ there was a focus on americana. Now, for ‘Farewell to Flesh’ the 80's funk/wave music gets a central place as for the keys too: with piano and harmonium.

Opener ‘A Storm is Coming’ refers directly to Katrina and is a short prelude of nature sounds and soft harpsichord music. The first song ‘A Place Like Home’ immediately breaks the dreamy atmosphere of the intro with some dark chords. No surprise that the song is about dreaming of places which we really can call ‘a home’. It is performed without real melancholy but on a pulsing bass line and with a poppy piano melody.

The eighties are fully present on ‘Voodoo Unto Me’. Lyrics such as “She's The Queen of New Orleans and you're just one of her sugar kings” or “Her magic's not black, nor white, just gray” highlight the popularity of occult superstitions in New Orleans. The bridge in the middle of the song features a fantastic bass solo played by Brandon Hayes - Jones' husband. Funky stuff!

Next track ‘Slasher’ got "(In the City Care Forgot)" next to the title: also a nickname for New Orleans. The city was already called this at the beginning of the 20th century, but the concrete reason remains for speculation to this day. In any case, this is a nice wave-based song. There is certainly a gothic atmosphere around ‘Let Me In’, due to the wonderful harpsichord. Yet the song rocks in this Rue Royal Remix, with Hays again on guitar. It's one big plea to get in: "Let you paint my skin with sin, just let me in". I guess the repetitive harpsichord undoubtedly conveys the impatience of standing in front of a closed door.

It gets a lot calmer on ‘Event Horizon’, a song written when Jones was still living in New Orleans. It's a ballad from a previous collaboration: that of Alaska Highway (with Mike Best from Among the Weeds). ‘Skyline’ also dates from an earlier project: The Point of Reflection (duo with John Koviak of Sub-Version, Propaganda Magazine, and London After Midnight). This piano and saxophone-supported song was recorded live at Lafitte's: a historic bar (built in 1722) in New Orleans.

Fortune tellers! With or without cards, they certainly belong here. The atmosphere is immediately good with a cool eighties rhythm section under a mysterious vocalise by Jones. The future only really starts after donating a coin and consulting the stars, stones or the classic fortune glass. I could smell a bit of patchouli scent while listening.

One of my personal favorites on this album is ‘Little Wolf’. The song shows the connection and fascination that the singer has with these animals: “Little wolf, in your eyes I can see my soul. Little wolf, by your hands I am healed”. The harmonium, together with the repetitive chorus, gives the song the halo of a prayer (or mantra). That special connection also has a financial part. As always, the revenue from his album sales go directly to the ‘Wolf Mountain Sanctuary’ in Lucerne Valley, California.

Jones covered songs before, such as ‘Time After Time’ by Cindi Lauper. On ‘Farewell to Flesh’ it’s a song by Fleetwood Mac: ‘Rhiannon’. He gets vocal assistance by his muse Monica Richards. He puts this song in his personal top three of all time favourites. Too bad his version of ‘House of the Rising Sun’ is missing. Lauren O'Connell turned it into a wonderful cover. It was used in the third season of ‘American Horror Story’ (‘Coven’). That season was about a witch community and was set in... New Orleans.

There are two versions of ‘Come Home to Mother’ on the record. They are remixes from the ‘Slasher E.P.’, for which he gets support from his sister DJ Amanda Jones. She’s a staple in the Hollywood Goth/Industrial club scene for many years.

Finally, I would like to mention the fine artwork of Emily Walker (instagram @gluminous_forms) who gave the album its nice cover. She portrays Jones as a true goth: pale skin, dressed in black, a cross around the neck, surrounded by a peacock feather and fortune glass. With a green glass of absinthe in his hand the picture is completed. Okay: it’s a very classic goth image but certainly appropriate. Let the night fall and put on this record!

This album will be released on Mardi Gras, Feb. 16th.

In Amerika is Mardi Gras in New Orleans big deal.

Met lyrics als “She’s The Queen of New Orleans and you’re just one of her sugar kings” of “Her magic’s not black, nor white, just gray” wordt de populariteit van het occulte bijgeloof in New Orleans in de verf gezet. Funky stuff!

Het is één grote smeekbede om binnen te geraken: “Let you paint my skin with sin, just let me in” gaat het refrein.

Ook ‘Skyline’ dateert uit een vroeger project: The Point of Reflection (duo with John Koviak of Sub-Version, Propaganda Magazine, and London After Midnight).

Little wolf, in your eyes I can see my soul. Little wolf, by your hands I am healed”.

New Orleans.
