Since the debut Canopy (2012) and a series of successful performances (Les Nuits Botaniques, Ardentes, Dour, etc.) it has been quiet for a while with regard to the Brussels formation Great Mountain Fire. Last year they were in residence at the American Theatre in Brussels and the result is the new album Sundogs on the PIAS label.

Music for dancing goths and crying sailors, is the slogan of the band, and that means that Great Mountain Fire fans are treated to a nice selection of catchy pop songs, straightforward, direct and playful. Lapus Lazuli kicks off and is worth a top 20 listing, because the singing of Antoine Bonan and Alexis Den Doncker sounds brilliant against a striking backdrop of drum beats and a typical guitar sound. What Fool begins with rippling electro, but develops as a quiet narrative ballad with a seductive chorus and atmospheric guitars, while the jazzy The Magic continues on beautiful electronics, heavy percussion and a seductive vocal line that takes you on a summer trip to wonderland. In Step Fever Great Mountain Fire chooses a higher pace, and once again the sound is dominated by harmonic singing, while there is also room for dark and then whining guitars and staccato drumming: a tempting track!

Four Poster Ride is different, because fat drums and guitars create a bluesy atmosphere which echoing vocals, while tempo changes keep the track exciting. Cap Milos sounds like an innocent children's song with small voices and lots of la-la-la's: a playful interlude on a bed of quiet guitars and tingling electronic sounds. You Shadow is relaxed and classic, kind of a tidy pop song with great vocals and good-sounding harmonies, an organ interlude and atmospheric guitars to emphasize the good-natured atmosphere. Million Years of Jetlag gets tingling guitars between smooth vocal lines and heavy flurries of violent electronics. After a cautious start, Lost Found unfolds into a dreamy and atmospheric track, melodious and entertaining with psychedelic keys. It Looks Perfect to Me closes the album on a quiet and understated manner.

Sundogs of Great Mountain Fire sounds tidy and airy, like the perfect soundtrack for a beautiful and long summer.

Sinds het debuut album Canopy (2012) en een reeks van succesvolle optredens (Les Nuits Botaniques, Les Ardentes, Dour, etc.) is het een tijdje stil geweest omtrent de Brusselse formatie Great Mountain Fire. Afgelopen jaar waren ze ‘in residence’ in het Amerikaans Theater in Brussel en het resultaat is het nieuwe album Sundogs dat bij PIAS verschijnt.

Muziek die de goths laat dansen en de matrozen huilen, is de slogan van Great Mountain Fire en dat betekent dat de fans worden getrakteerd op een selectie goed in het oor liggende en aanstekelijke popsongs, ongecompliceerd, direct en speels. Lapus Lazuli bijt de spits af en is wat ons betreft meteen goed voor een top 20-notering, want de samenzang van Antoine Bonan en Alexis Den Doncker klinkt schitterend tegen een achtergrond van opvallende drumbeats en een typisch gitaargeluid. What Fool begint met kabbelend elektro, maar ontpopt zich als een rustige verhalende ballade met een verleidelijk refrein en atmosferische gitaren, terwijl het jazzy The Magic op prachtige electronica en stevige percussie dobbert en de verleidelijke zanglijn je meeneemt op een zomerse uitstap naar wonderland. In Step Fever kiest Great Mountain Fire voor een hoger tempo, en opnieuw domineert de harmonische samenzang, terwijl er ook ruimte is voor donkere en vervolgens jengelende gitaren en staccato drumwerk: een track die in de benen kruipt!

Four Poster Ride tapt uit weer een ander vaatje, want drums en vette gitaren creëren een bluesy sfeertje waarover echoënde zanglijnen worden uitgespreid en de tempowisselingen het geheel spannend houden. Cap Melos klinkt als een onschuldig kinderliedje met kleine stemmetjes en veel la-la-la’s, een speels intermezzo op een bedje van rustige gitaren en tintelende elektronische geluidjes. You Shadow kiest een relaxte koers. Het is een klassieke, maar opgeruimde popsong met prachtige vocalen en opnieuw een goed klinkende samenzang, een orgelachtig tussenspel en atmosferische gitaren om de goedgemutste sfeer te onderlijnen. Million Years of Jetlag krijgt tintelend gitaargeluid waartussen de zanglijnen zich op een soepele manier een weg banen met heftige uithalen van de elektronica. Na een voorzichtige start breekt Lost Found halfweg open en evolueert tot een dromerige en atmosferische track, welluidend en onderhoudend met psychedelische toetsen. It Looks Perfect to Me sluit het album op een rustige en ingetogen manier af.

Sundogs van Great Mountain Fire klinkt opgeruimd en luchtig, als de perfecte soundtrack voor een mooie en lange zomer.
