The Norwegian industrial rock band Mortiis returns to its old values. Not only the music is more varied and inspired then before, also the mask returns. Mortiis' rest days were well spent. The impending Bleed Like You is the prelude of one of the best records by Mortiis. Heavily accentuated guitar riffs, songs of which the guitar sound imperceptible is taken over by keyboard/sample riffs, furious drums/beats and the distinctive, loud, somewhat abrasive voice of Mortiis himself.

It is clear that the band has digged in its own glorious past, but it delivers more. Although it really is not appropriate to enumerate names that inspired The Great Deceiver, we make an exception as it characterizes the variation of this album.

The groove on Demons Are Back is reminiscent of the better industrial rock work by Rob Zombie and it has the viciousness that Marilyn Manson already lacks for a while. Road To Burn and the remarkable Sins Of Mine sound like the earlier Nine Inch Nails. Scalding The Burnt has the immediacy of Ministry.

Mortiis plays hard, soft, accessible and inscrutable. Compare the hardness and the groove of Feed The Greed with the subsequent ballad Hard To Believe or the almost industrial punk of The Great Leap.

Mortiis stays Mortiis. Unexpected, but The Great Deceiver rivals with The Grudge.

Het Noorse industrial rockgezelschap Mortiis grijpt terug naar oude waarden. Niet alleen de muziek klinkt gevarieerder en geïnspireerder, maar ook het masker lijkt terug (te keren). De rustperiode heeft Mortiis goed gedaan. De dreigende start met Bleed Like You is de opmaat voor een van de beste platen van de band. Zwaar aangezette gitaar riffs, tracks waarin de gitaar ongemerkt wordt overgenomen door keyboard-/sampleriffs, furieuze drums/beats en de kenmerkende, schreeuwerige, ietwat schurende stem van Mortiis zelf.

Het is duidelijk dat de band in zijn eigen roemruchte verleden is gaan graven, maar hij levert meer. Hoewel het, gezien dat eigen verleden, eigenlijk niet opportuun is om namen te noemen die The Great Deceiver hebben geïnspireerd, doen we het deze keer toch. Het tekent de variatie op dit album.

De groove van Demons Are Back doet denken aan de betere industrial rock van Rob Zombie en heeft de venijnigheid die een act als Marilyn Manson al een tijd ontbeert. Road To Burn en het opmerkelijke Sins Of Mine spelen muzikaal gezien leentjebuur bij het oudere werk van Nine Inch Nails. Scalding The Burnt heeft de directheid van Ministry.

Mortiis speelt hard, zacht, toegankelijk en ondoorgrondelijk. Vergelijk de hardheid en de groove van Feed The Greed bijv. met de daaropvolgende ballad Hard To Believe of het glasharde, bijna industrial punkachtige The Great Leap.

Mortiis blijft vooral Mortiis. Onverwacht, maar The Great Deceiver steekt The Grudge naar de kroon. Qua gelaagdheid, volwassenheid en variatie gaat deze nieuweling dat illustere album voorbij.
