Shoegaze is back in vogue. Slowdive and Swervedriver are touring again, Lush has just announced its resurrection and there’s no end in new upcoming bands. New to that list is Static Daydream, a band consisting of Paul Baker (who was previously in Skywave and Ceremony) and his girlfriend Jamie Casey.

After last year's The Only One EP, the time was right for a full debut twith eleven songs. The opener More Than Today immediately reveals their sound: everything sounds messy, the amplifier is in the red, the guitars have an irresistible vacuum cleaner sound, the drums are tight and the vocals are barely audible. Exactly as it should be, and you don’t have to be a pop encyclopaedist to understand that these youngsters have taken their inspiration from the great classics of shoegazepop.

Just Stay sounds a bit more psychedelic and offers some rest, but actually all the songs have the same elements without sounding like a monotonous mush. Perhaps some will suggest that Static Daydream does not sound very original (the influences are indeed crystal clear), but as long as that produces catchy indie pop, you will not hear us complain.

This debut can be categorized next to Crocodiles and The Raveonettes. Recommended (and more) for shoegaze fanatics, and the rest should listen to!

Shoegaze is weer helemaal in. Grondleggers als Slowdive of Swervedriver zijn weer volop aan het toeren, Lush heeft net zijn wederopstanding aangekondigd en de jonge wolven schieten als paddenstoelen uit de grond. Nieuw in het rijtje is Static Daydream, een bandje dat bestaat uit Paul Baker (die eerder bij Skywave en Ceremony zat) en zijn vriendin Jamie Casey.

Na de in 2014 verschenen ep The Only One, is de tijd rijp voor een volwaardig debuut dat elf nummers telt. De opener More Than Today windt er geen doekjes om: alles klinkt lekker rommelig, de versterker gaat in het rood, de gitaren hebben een onweerstaanbaar stofzuigergeluid, de drums zijn strak en de zang is nauwelijks verstaanbaar. Precies zoals het hoort, en je moet geen popencyclopedist zijn om te snappen dat deze jongelui hun inspiratie uit de grote klassiekers van de shoegazepop hebben gehaald.

Just Stay klinkt misschien wat meer psychedelisch en biedt wat rust, maar eigenlijk hebben alle nummers dezelfde kenmerken zonder dat het een eentonige brij wordt. Zuurpruimen zullen misschien opperen dat Static Daydream niet bijster origineel klinkt (de invloeden liggen er inderdaad nogal vingerdik op), maar zolang jdaar aanstekelijke indiepop uit voortvloeit, hoor je ons niet klagen.

Deze debuutplaat mag je zonder nadenken in het vakje van Crocodiles of The Raveonettes onderbrengen. Verplicht voer voor shoegazefanaten, en de rest luistert ook maar best mee!
